The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)
A Snooze Fest..
I don't know where to start. Being a fan of this franchisee i had so many expectations but the movie is so slow that even if you go out and grab a cup of coffee you will come back to see that the movie has not gone anywhere. I admire Jennifer Lawrence but this is probably her weakest performance till date. She has sounded screechy and devoid of emotions for most parts which is a surprise considering what a fine actress she is.The movie is unbelievably stretched out that it gets to ridiculous proportions as you start praying for the movie to end.
The Mockingjay should have been a one part movie but as we all know for commercial interests a 45 minutes plot has been dragged out for two painful hours. Only Jennifer Lawrence has hogged the lion share of screen time while other actors like Woody Harrelson are criminally wasted. The direction lack vision. The editing is probably the weakest part of the movie. The story of the movie can be told in 5 lines and they have made a two hours movie out of this. The high rating for this movie is surprising to see.
True Detective (2014)
Puts many a movies to shame
This show has set the bar really high.Everything starting from the outstanding casting, direction, screenplay and the story telling is so meticulously handled that you keep craving for more. The most outstanding bit of this show is that you do not want to miss on any bit of dialogue. Every piece of uttered word conveys something. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have put in outstanding performances in this buddy cop crime thriller. Marty and Cohle have caught the intensity to perfection without going overboard. It is impressive to see two top actors not competing rather working together in such a fashion that every scene comes alive with the chemistry they share on and off screen. Both characters are not shy to depict their vulnerabilities.
This show is like a movie made in 8 parts. Each episode blends in to one another with unassumed ease. As you start going from scene to scene episode after episode it is like going through the seven course meal. Nic Pizzolatto has to be given credit for bringing everything together in a seamless fashion. The Story telling and the sheer arc of 17 years is handled so perfectly by Nic Pizzolatto. The thing i like about Woody is that he is more than happy to let McConaughey dominate a scene which in my opinion is a great asset to have for any actor. some actors get insecure when their fellow actor has the better lines or a slightly stronger role. It is a show every person irrespective of the genre he follows should it a try. I do not want to go in to the plot cause i feel this show is best watched without any pre-conceived ideas.
