Napoleon (2023)
It should have been on Netflix
First things first.
Everyone knows that Napoleon was a brilliant strategist and tactician and his military career spanned a period of 22 years during which he fought 81 battles of which 70 were victorious and 11 defeated. At the same time he was also a very able politician, a reformer who changed the face of Europe for the next 100 years.
That it's impossible to cover all of the above in 2 hours and 38 minutes should have given the film's writers something to think about.
In the year 1793 when the Siege of Toulon took place, Napoleon, who was born in 1769, was 23 years old. With all due respect to Joaquin Phoenix's acting performance, you can't look 24 at 50.
The battle of the pyramids (1798) did not take place near the pyramids, but 12 km further, at Imbaba. Even if someone wanted to fire a cannon at the pyramids (which didn't happen), they wouldn't have succeeded due to the performance of the cannons of that time (the maximum firing distance was about 1.8km).
There are no historical accounts or credible evidence suggesting that Napoleon participated in close combat during battles. His leadership style was characterized by a keen understanding of military tactics, logistics, and the ability to inspire and command his armies.
There are only a few aspects that I have mentioned out of many others because I do not want this review to become a spoiler.
Anyway, it's pretty hard not to fall asleep to this movie.
Iron Cross: The Road to Normandy (2022)
An abomination
I saw a lot of war movies, few hundreds may be, but this is one of the scariest. Because is a total and absolutely failure.
Nothing is on its place.
It's hard to believe that someone can throw money and produce something like these, but it's just happened. It's a total waste of resources and energy both for those who produced it and for those trying to watch it. This movie is a shame for its genre. I don't know why is called a war movie, cause it has nothing to do with a movie. Do not torture yourself by trying to watch it.
Neurons don't regenerate anymore and watching this so-called movie will surely destroy them.
Rise of Empires: Ottoman (2020)
A soap opera
I will only express my opinion about the II series of this film production.
First of all, I don't know why it's called docu-drama.
Because it's neither a documentary nor a drama, but a soap opera.
I will point out some aspects related to gross historical inaccuracy:
1. We know what Vlad Tepes looked like considering the portrait from the Ambras castle in Tyrol. In the series it looks completely different.
2. Mehmed II is said to have been wounded at the siege of Belgrade while fighting the Hungarian Black Army. The Siege of Belgrade took place in 1456 and the Hungarian Black Army was formed in 1458, two years later.
3. The Poenari fortress is located southeast of Targoviste, in reality it is northwest. Probably the "experts" held the map upside down.
4. The decorations, Gothic to be sure, remind more of "Wednesday" than of Wallachia of the 15th century.
5. Mehmet II and Vlad the Impaler never fought hand-to-hand in any battle.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
A must see movie
Along with "Stalingrad-1993" and "Downfall-2004", this film proves to be one of the best German war films.
Considering that WWI films are quite rare (and I wonder why), this production impressed me in every aspect: visuals, acting, soundtrack and special effects without excessive CGI.
A successful screening that only has one small historical and technical inaccuracy, which I won't go into here because I don't want to make a spoiler.
The film was announced as Germany's submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards and I think it fully deserves this nomination.
Îmi este indiferent daca în istorie vom intra ca barbari (2018)
