Psych: The Movie (2017)
Nice to see the gang back, but it wasn't great
I can't say I enjoyed this too much. Worse for me is I actually paid for it (I wanted to support the show and encourage them to make more). The good news is that they did make more and the later movies are better.
It was enjoyable enough, simply because it was nice to see the gang back together, but the story was basically a below average episode stretched out to movie length.
The banter between Shawn and Gus felt normal, but some of the other interactions felt too slow and/or forced. Some of the humour didn't land properly either.
The good news is that I've seen movies two and three, and each one is better than the last. They're planning a fourth installment, so hopefully that trend continues.
Movie 1 (this one): below average, stretched out to movie length. "Like butter scraped over too much bread".
Psych 2: Lassie Come Home: An "average" episode. On par with series, and didn't feel "stretched".
Psych 3: This is Gus: Much better. A "good episode", and didn't feel stretched at all. Made me want to watch the whole series from the beginning.
I'd still watch this one first if you're a fan of the show and then go onto the others. There is one character introduced in this movie that appears in the later ones, but you won't miss too much if you decide to skip it.
Ghosts (2021)
A fun show (I like it better than the British version)
Love the show. It's light-hearted, and different enough from anything else on (endless crime procedurals and the like). The characters/ghosts do evolve in their behaviour - something you don't always expect from a comedy. I look forward to seeing where they take it.
Yes, I know it's based on a British show of the same name, but I like this one better (it's a little more polished, and has 20-odd eps a season instead of 6).
A couple of the stories (especially setting up the premise) are exactly the same as the UK version, but like I said, with 20+ eps a season, it already outnumbers them and has enough differences (though many of the ghosts are pretty much the same mix).
Give it a chance for 3 or 4 eps and I think you'll like it.
Ghosts: The Heir (2023)
Fun enough episode, but underwhelming for finale
I'm enjoying this series... I'm actually enjoying it more than the UK version, but that's probably because I starting watching the US one first.
I heard there was a cliffhanger for this episode and thought it would be with the inheritance, but that wrapped up rather quickly. It did seem a bit lame how they blindly accepted things in the first place, but I'll give it a pass as it fits its offbeat offbeat comedy style. I still think they could have done it better though.
That said, it was fun enough, and the cliffhanger ended up being someone getting "sucked off". A bit of a ho hum cliffhanger tbh, as it could just as easily be prom girl or one of the basement dwellers than one of the main cast.
Nigel makes most sense from storyline perspective, but with the writer's strike and the possibility that some actors move on, it does give the writers some flexibility (which other showrunners must envy). I suspect nothing is set in stone until strike is over and all actors are on board.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Far worse than I imagined.
This isn't the cheesy feel-good comedy that was "Sabrina: The Teenage Witch" - but I was OK with that. I enjoyed the other, but I'd rather something different than a copy, and if nothing else, this show successfully conveyed a different mood.
This show tried hard to deliver something different - a spooky, moody interpretation. It feels like it's set in the 60s, but it's hard to tell (and from what I watched, deliberately vague), but waffles on about white patriarchy and misogyny.
I'm not kidding. The show is full on over-the-top "woke", and not remotely subtle about it. And that's just the first episode.
Complete trash. I was going to give it one star, but I figured it deserved an extra for trying to be not just a reboot. Alas, it's rubbish.
Happy! (2017)
Innovative, creepy, funny
Season 1 was a unique show with quirky, funny, creepy, completely over the top blood and gore, and extremely entertaining.
Alas, season 2 was complete and utter dreck, which is why I only gave 6/10 to the show instead of a higher score. Watch the first season, but leave it there.
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service: Daughters (2019)
2/10 for the A-story, but 9/10 for the ending
This was easily the worst episode of the season.
Please stop with the dead people talking to Gibbs thing. This one one so over the top, I thought it was going to end with a Bones-like twist where Gibbs had a brain tumour. That was the only reason I kept watching (there was a twist, though it was something different). But even with an acceptable explanation, the story was terrible,
As for the ending... great to have Ziva back. I thought we were going to have to wait longer for the payoff of the Ziva-setup (until next season), but we're seeing it now. Does Tony know she's alive? So many questions.
Of course, we're assuming she is alive. I know other commentators have insisted she's real and not another ghost/imaginary figure, but... are we sure? Bishop hasn't actually seen Ziva directly - she only read a note. What if Gibbs has gone all Beautiful Mind, and wrote the note to Bishop himself? Brain tumour?
Just putting the idea out there - don't hate on me for it. I think she's real. I certainly hope Ziva is really alive, and that she and Tony (and their daughter) can live happily ever after. Not sure Michael Weatherly will want to come back to play Tony for a guest episode (he may want the character behind him).
Anyway, the fact that I have a spark of excitement in speculating these things is what saved the episode. If it was a good ep as well, I could have given it 9 or 10/10 as others have. I think those reviewers are putting too much weight on the final scene. Unfortunately, I can't do that - the main story of the episode just wasn't good enough.
