Rise of the Footsoldier (2007)
Abysmal beyond belief
This overacted, poorly scripted, piece of cockney hooligan glorified trash makes me feel embarrassed to be British. It is laughably bad and without any likeable or redeemable characters, terrible camera work too. It is like reading something vile in news and then watching it. The main character has one of the most punchable faces Ive seen in a while. It baffles me how anyone would watch this over almost anything else, i'd rather watch Eastenders than this again. Yet, lots of people seem to enjoy this and it's sequels, fair enough, this is not me saying you are wrong for liking this but i really don't understand why, unless you're attracted to vile people. I prefer watching entertainment that doesn't insult my intelligence or just pointlessly glorify thugs and violence. Abysmal and one of the worst examples of British cinema Ive seen.
Camping (2016)
Julia Davis is a genius!
I love dark and twisted comedy so to see all this talent work with Julia Davis you are guaranteed a good time. Nobody writes characters and situations quite like Julia. I did watch this show when it originally aired and then waited ages for a dvd that never came, it appears this show was quite underrated and maybe not seen by many. It's a shame really because it's up there with Nighty Night, i also enjoyed the follow up show Sally4ever. If you enjoy dark comedy shows like The League of Gentlemen, Inside No9 or have seen any of Julia's previous work, i highly recommend this. It's like watching a bunch of seriously troubled people get together for a holiday and then slowly destroy each other's lives, but in a darkly, cringey and mostly hilarious way. It's just great fun with top notch performances.
The Last of Us: When You're Lost in the Darkness (2023)
Great work HBO and Naughty Dog!
Fantastic start to the show, It was different and very faithful at the same time. The cast are just perfect and I love the whole production design, it's everything i hoped it could be. I got goosebumps during the title sequence when i heard Gustavo Santaolalla's music. The 2003 sequence was spectacularly done and still packed a punch. The special effects team did a amazing job on the infected especially one in particular that's discovered later on in the episode. I could ramble on about the episode but i don't want to spoil anything or explain the plot too much, people should just see it. I mainly just wanted to say as a huge fan of the games that I'm very happy with the first episode. Congratulations and great job to all involved, I can't wait for the next episode.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
I hate star ratings
It's very stylish, inventive and very well made, great cinematography, great cast Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis! But at about an hour in and i felt like it's just not quite doing it for me and i found myself wanting to do something else with my time. I'm really not sure why. I'd still rather see more movies like this get made other than yet more Marvel/DC character spin offs, the whole superhero concept is getting extremely tiresome to me. Maybe that's why i just couldn't quite get into this because it still felt a bit like a superhero movie at times. I'll give it another go soon and will probably feel embarrassed about this opinion and delete it. Maybe it's a case of it's not you it's me.
Better Call Saul: Fun and Games (2022)
Outstanding!
The end of an era. It's been quite a ride and with whats to come in the story, Better Call Saul was just the calm before the storm.
One of the best things about both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul for me, is that every choice a character makes, has consequences that are very believable, no matter how cruel it is and we see everything. These characters are so perfectly developed, that whenever there's a big moment, it feels truly earned. I've never watched an episode of either show and felt that the writing was off, or that a character did something out of character for the sake of excitement or for a cheap cliff hanger. I'm just blown away by how amazing and consistent the writing is. From top to bottom it's beautifully well made, especially the cinematography and exceptional performances.
I believe that there was no way forward for Kim and Jimmy, they orchestrated the downfall of Howard which ultimately led to his death. For Kim it was just too much to bear and she's now realised that there's no future for them, they are very bad for each other. I loved this episode, i liked that Mike tried to do the decent thing of telling Manuel Varga about his son's death and trying to give him some closure, although I don't think it made Mike feel much better. Mike is really struggling with his morality, he is a good guy deep down but he's with the bad guy's now. I liked the scenes with Gus, especially at the bar, it was interesting and the impression i got was, as well as Gus being relieved to have survived the Lalo situation, is that he wishes for a moment he had a different and peaceful life. Instead, he longs for revenge...
The time jump from the end of Kim and Jimmy's relationship to the Saul that we know from Breaking Bad, wow, the connection between the show's is now fully complete. It was a sad and inevitable end of an era and the beginning of a new one. Masterfully done, it's all perfectly snapped together like a jigsaw puzzle, or Lego. Seeing his comb over hair, his earpiece, his office complete with those white columns and the U. S. constitution wallpaper, and also the inflatable Statue of Liberty above the building. It was a joy to see.
We still don't know the fate of Saul and Kim, but if that was the last time we see Kim, I'll miss her.
But before we get to the end though, Heisenberg is coming...
The Boys: Herogasm (2022)
One of the best.
I think that was probably one of the best episodes of any show I've seen. So much happened and most characters had their time to shine. I didn't expect the episode to play out the way it did, so much happened even before we get to the Herogasm part. That part in particular was just hilarious and really well done, I've heard it's far more extreme in the novel than what could be shown on TV, but I didn't feel like i needed to see more nudity or messed up sex acts than what was shown. It was so funny though especially MM, covered in various fluids, he was brilliant this episode. Some touching moments peppered throughout the mayhem which again was really well done. Great visual effects and the climactic showdown was edge of your seat stuff, I didn't expect to see that fight with Homelander this episode. I must have looked like an excited child during that entire scene haha. Brilliant performances as usual, in particular Antony Starr, he was born to play Homelander, he's scary when he's angry. I could go on and on about this excellent episode.
It felt like there was enough content here to spread it out over more episodes, but I'm glad they didn't because it was moved at such a great pace and was non stop fun to watch. I'd probably rate this a 9.8, not that I really care about ratings. If they can top this episode, which I'm sure they can, we'll be in for a treat.
Ozark: Sanctified (2022)
One of the finest shows out there.
I don't usually write reviews that often, I'm a bit lazy when it comes to stuff like that. But i had to write something because I've just finished part 1 of season 4. After the long wait for this season, I thought i would space the episodes out over a week and savour it a bit but it was just impossible not to binge it all as usual. Wow, it really is just phenomenal tv. First of all the performances across the board just top notch. Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner in particular, i think it's the best work they've done. Episode 7, Julia Garner just absolutely made my jaw drop with her performance.
The storyline is so intense with a seemingly never ending array of problems for the main characters to overcome, it really feels like it's all about to boil over. This show hasn't been afraid to kill off big characters so it's always in the back of my mind that nobody is safe. I'm not entirely sure who i should be rooting for at the moment, probably Ruth and baby Zeke, it's all very murky right now, but in a good way. Although it was inevitable, it was a very shocking end to this episode. I cannot wait for part 2.
The show as a whole has been one of the most consistently compelling and most well made pieces of television I've seen. As crime dramas go it's definitely up there with the best such as The Wire, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. I really appreciate that we can still see such amazing tv and film being made during these difficult few years we've all had, Thank You.
