Iratta (2023)
Malayalam Incendies
The making is excellent, but it appears that the makers watched Incendies and made the story around it. The story line is gripping, but once Joju takes over investigation, everything solves itself too easily, to reveal the climax inspired from Canadian movie Incendies. Joju shines as both the good and the bad cop, and has plenty of opportunity to bring out his acting chops. Most of the other actors do not have much scope to perform, but see through their roles without issues. A good start by the debutant director who manages to keep the investigation edgy till the last half an hour, and kudos to the makers as well for bringing this to life.
Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru (2016)
Over-rated is the word
Heard a lot about this movie. Did not live up to the hype.
Pros:
*Karthick Naren's direction is top class for a debutante
*The ambiance of the movie is good till the last 20 minutes
Cons:
*Underwhelming story-line with many plot holes, easy to miss with the melee of threads in the movie
*A lot of convenient strokes of luck strewn throughout the movie - the ambiance of the moving being the saving grace in making the deductions look extra-ordinary when they are anything but that
*The last 20 minutes are clichéd to the core, with the director taking the easy way out to finish the movie.
Verdict : Over-rated is the word.
Drishyam (2013)
Surely deserves a place in the IMDb Top 250
The trailer did not prepare me for what lay in store at the theater. I was expecting a Sathyan Anthikad melodrama, even though many people had vouched for the movie's excellence. The first half panned out in a very formulaic way, with a happy family and a song added to make the proceedings look increasingly ordinary. The second half is what would take your breath away. For the first time in my life, I saw people standing up and give a standing ovation when the movie ended and mind you I was among the people who were applauding. The standout performers were Asha Sharath and Kalabhavan Shajohn, with Mohanlal recreating some of his old magic which I had not seen since the dawn of the millennium. Baby Esther also gives a fine performance and do not forget to look out for Anthony Perumbavoor who provides a comic touch to the proceedings. Overall a fine movie which shows that Jeethu Joseph's movies will be wanted by all top actors in Malayalam henceforth.
