House of the Dragon (2022)
Good solid start
Let's be clear from the start, this isn't action packed but that doesn't mean nothing is happening. I'd say it's very similar to the early seasons of GoT. It's very much about the politics of Kings Landing and the line of succession to the throne. It's building to something slowly which is what I loved about early GoT.
My only criticism would be the time shift mid season. While necessary to live the story forward, it was disappointing to leave those versions of the characters behind.
I don't agree with some critical that the budget seems to drop off mid season, there's nothing to back that up. If anything I'd suggest it's quite the opposite.
It also sets up an explosive season 2 very nicely.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Decent!
I expected a simple plot, loads of gore and plenty of chainsaw fodder and that is exactly what I got. It didn't pretend to be anything other than what it is and what is always was. Just enjoy it, don't overthink it.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
Good fun
I came into this expecting a basic storyline with some great action and I was not disappointed. The fighting was satisfyingly brutal and well choreographed. It had just the right amount of cheese and didn't take itself too seriously. Kano is the standout character here for me. All in all it was a good fun movie that didn't try to be something it's not or play for too long.
Transformers: War for Cybertron (2020)
A good start
This looks fantastic and captures the spirit of G1 but with a darker tone. The story is solid and the pacing well done. However some of the voice casting is a bit disappointing. Starscream, Megatron and Jetfire are memorable but much of the rest sound quite generic. I do look forward to Earthrise though.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
There A LOT going on
There is a lot going on in this movie but also it feels maybe 30 minutes too long. I think the challenge was trying to introduce the big bad into the movie and build some story there when perhaps the time for that was in the last movie. That said, it is a very cinematic experience with loads of action to enjoy. The characters of Rey and Ren both developed nicely here and it tied up the Skywalker saga as best it could. It was definitely fun to watch (though my bum got a bit numb toward the end) and I will rewatch several times upon home release.
Predators (2010)
Good mindless fun
Don't expect anything complex and engaging and you won't be disappointed. It's a Predator movie, you know what to expect. The action is solid with some nice set pieces. It's well acted though with the talent involved it does feel a little bit of a wasted opportunity but, again, it's a Predator movie.
