Pieces of April (2003)
Terrific Flick
Some friends of mine gave me the DVD of this movie as a gift, I had never heard of it before. All they would tell me was it's about a woman whose oven breaks while she is cooking her first Thanksgiving dinner, and she tries to enlist the help of neighbors - neighbors that she has never met before - to get the bird cooked. Oh, and they said the dysfunction that follows is really, really funny. I won't tell you any more, except I didn't see a whole lot of dysfunction as much as I saw quirky characters, overcoming all sorts of adversity, and, ultimately, love, corny as that may sound. All sorts of love - familial, neighborly, partners. Also, I did laugh a lot, and I was also impressed by the dialog and subplots - and the way the writer, director, and actors brought it all together. Thoroughly enjoyable movie. Tears for me at the end. Gobble, gobble!
A Home at the End of the World (2004)
Beautiful Movie Time
I knew nothing of this movie and rented it on a recommendation. It turned out to be a wonderful surprise. It really was a beautiful, human story, beautifully conceived and acted. I would guess that a lot of people of a certain age may have lived through many of the events presented here. I certainly recognized a few.
Sort of a life is what you make of it theme. A lot of who we are is made up of choices and if we choose love and beauty . . . . who knows what might happen. Again, all beautifully acted and conceived. And Colin Farrel - couldn't take my eyes of him.
The vintage early 70's music was the icing on this cake. Laura Nero . . . haven't thought of her in years! And the Paul Simon "Me & Julio down by the schoolyard" song! An enchanted evening all around. And I'm still thinking of it all today!
Kiss the Bride (2002)
Insight & Laughter
I found Kiss the Bride to be an edgy, enjoyable, movie ride with some superbly timed dramatic and comedic surprises along the way.
The pace of the movie was good and the score was great - it really complemented the goings-on on screen. The characters all showed varying degrees of insight into familial relationships, making choices about life, and then reevaluating those life choices. Some questions got resolved and answered, to some degree, during the course of the movie, others remained open-ended and unresolved - a lot like life. The characters also showed some pretty human flaws like insensitivity, self absorption, ingratitude. Put all together, it made for a very good movie. Sit back and enjoy!
