Fireproof (2008)
Great Movie!
-Peace be with you! If you have not done so already, I would like to HIGHLY recommend that you go to the theatre and see the movie "Fireproof." It stars Kirk Cameron. The movie is about a husband and wife who have grown apart over the years and (verbally) fight. Divorce is raised as a solution when a family member 'intervenes' in an attempt to help save the marriage by issuing a dare that plays out over 40 days. There are a number of sub-plots and twists that make the storyline even more intriguing, including a consistent amount of comic relief that never loses its touch or its ability to make you laugh...hard.
-I can be a severe critic when it comes to so-called "Christian" movies due to their cheesy screenplays and plots ("accept Jesus and all is right for you in the world"). While "Fireproof" is among the Christian genre of movies, I have to admit that the plot does not admit of a simple "accept Jesus" and a magic wand erases all your problems. There is still work to be done, so to speak, and I have to say that I thought Kirk Cameron and the rest of the cast finally did some justice to what it means to convert to the Lord.
-Because this movie strikes at the heart--myself being no exception--it pains me deeply to admit that some of the theology was a bit off. However, when one looks at the point of the movie (the sacredness of the marriage bond), it was dead on and any "off" theology is easily forgivable from a human perspective and I'd rather not itemize the quirks in the theology.
-Speaking as a practicing Catholic who believes in the indissolubility of marriage, this movie is a wonderful testament to the marriage bond and reminds us that there is a way to save marriages. Dare I say that the movie has the potential to save lives, not just marriages. Many people take out their anger and frustration in various ways due to a "bad" or "failing" marriage and I think that if people saw this movie, they would be presented with a way to conversion.
-The story is absolutely wonderful and a God-send to our society. There were moments where I laughed hard...other moments where I just sat and watched the plot develop...and still other times where I sat in my seat and simply cried. Rare is the movie that will cause me to sit in a movie theatre and start talking out loud (and become the cause of other people to start laughing at me) over a plot scene but "Fireproof" is one of those movies.
Please, go see this movie if you can. It may change your life.
The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima (1952)
Love This Movie!
This movie is fantastic. I would love to see it on DVD someday with some extra features. I'm fairly certain the woman playing Sr. Lucia at the end is the same lady who does the voice of Our Lady throughout the movie.
What is more interesting is that there are only 4 people left alive from the making of this movie--Angela Clark (Lucia's mother), and the three children. Sr. Lucia (the real one) just died on 2-13-05, and Angela Clark is just 5 years behind her. Interesting to note, but not worth much in the long run. I just thought it would be cool to point that out. Maybe they'll have a reunion of the last 4 main characters?
