Can I Tell You A Secret? (2024)
It's just not good
Apparently we have exhausted every past crime that is worth making a documentary about, because this is not one of those.
Don't get me wrong, stalking is something horrible to experience for the victims and we should totally challenge social media platforms for their role in it.
But this documentary was just not gripping or exciting at all. It wasn't even a mystery who the perpetrator was or how he was caught. It just sort of happened, he was caught, had matching pictures on his phone with the fake accounts, was sentenced and that was it.
The makers had to dramatize the sent messages with a stupid "creepy" voiceover, because apparently the whole story with only text messages was not exciting enough otherwise and they had to make it seem like the perpetrator sent those voice messages. There was so little original footage, they had to repeat a few animated scenes (the stupid phone lines) and smiley faces over and over.
I don't really want to go into detail about how the victims handled it. "Just block the contact" etc. Seems like an easy solution, but I'd think in excessive stalking it's often much more complicated than that. If someone really impersonates you and writes messages on your behalf, you'd likely get stressed out aswell. So no, the victims didn't handle it perfectly, but I'd give them the benefit of the doubt here.
But still, it was just not exciting or "mystery" enough to make a two hour documentary about.
Away (2020)
Definitely more Drama than Sci-Fi
The genres for this series are listed as "Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi" and this is exactly what it is in this order. Therefore I am going to rate it for what (I think) it is supposed to be - a drama series and the personal challenges the astronauts and their families/friends face. Unfortunately the series doesn't even do that very good.
If you are only interested in a technical series going in depth about the challenges of going to Mars you should definitely skip this one.
The drama/relationship part is okayish. Unfortunately the writers once again think the audience is extra stupid and they send emotionally unstable people to Mars and desperately try to make it seem realistic. But I guess that's the problem when you try to make a drama series out of a Mars mission. There wouldn't be a lot of content for drama if you write realistic, calm and rational-thinking characters. The actors try to do a decent job, but their characters are sometimes so annoying and emotional (which I hope is unrealistic for real astronauts) that I just couldn't take it anymore and skipped over a lot of the drama.
Unfortunately the sci-fi part is a complete waste of time. Just because you have a decent CGI budget and can render a spaceship and some planets doesn't make it Sci-Fi. They don't even try to make some of the basic things in space realistic.
I'd give the drama a 6/10 and the Sci-Fi a 3/10 at best because of some of the better visuals.
