Hei bai mi ma (2023)
slow start with momentum that doesn't quit.
What's not to like in a wonderfully acted series with wonderfully choreographed action scenes, powerful acting with twists and turns in the plot. The landscape was stark yet beautiful, and the music was subtle and lively. While the ending left a few holes and the de rigueur Chinese patriotism, the intelligence of the plot is the hook for me.
This was an action film with hints of romance, important characters who die, but justice wins without vulgar language or sex scenes. The main actor known for his rom coms became the son of a widowed police officer willing to infiltrate the complicated leadership to find her and report on their doings.
Just a great story with great acting and plot. It was a slow start with momentum that doesn't quit. I hope there is a season 2.
Dojeok: Kalui Sori (2023)
The best of Korean entertainment!
The initial flashbacks were a bit confusing, and it took me longer than I wished to sort out. That said, the wait was absolutely worth it. The plot is not complicated, but the acting, period sets, costumes, and characters make for magic. The main characters were exceptional, but the supporting characters whether crazy, wise, obsessed, or violent, created the web of humanity that carried the show. The music alone that is played during the fight scenes is brilliant-whether thought provoking or pure tongue-in-cheek. The humor of the most serous characters is delightful. I'm truly hoping for a season 2, NETFLIX.
My Heart Is Beating (2023)
Sweet romance with vampire undertones
I'm glad I endured the first 2 episodes, because the series becomes better and better-"endure" is not an exaggeration.
Taecyeon's acting is more muted than usual, and all the other actors played their parts so well that the story just flowed. Taecyeon's best friends are delightful in both time periods, the female lead was excellent using a more deadpan demeanor to visually account for her sad life, and the two supporting (2nd love interest leads) actors maintain their way of becoming part of the complicated love story without drawing attention to themselves.
It's a typical K-drama romance with trauma, tropes, and disappointed second leads. The modern day vampire twist is sometimes amusing, sometimes pathetic.
Looking for love or finding it when not looking are the real themes here. If looking for a sweet romance with occasional action, regular humor, and without annoying characters, this series might be for you.
Bu Ke Si Yi De Ai Qing (2021)
Light on trauma, heavy on romance
This is a modern Chinese series at its Hallmark best. Don't watch if you are looking for an expensive, top star, special effects, or dramatic social commentary; however, if you are looking to unwind with a relaxing sweet romance and don't mind some typical tropes-consider this. Nice chemistry, no 2nd lead syndrome with a happy ending for all.
Nal Nokyeojuo (2019)
Disappointed
Maybe this movie was rushed to match the return of the star from mandatory military service. Maybe the script or the director was unprepared. On the whole, the pacing was bad, the script was inept, the characters were disconnected and unconvincing, while the movie as a whole seem to serve as a star vehicle. I was disappointed.
Naui ajusshi (2018)
Compelling
Compelling, not entertaining. Dark side of life for all of the significant characters is expressed even in lighting and sets. Rising above the bitterness, pain and disappointment is a slow and nearly suffocating experience for the viewer, but the director, the actors and the filming have created an experience not to be missed.
