The Old Guard (2020)
Charlize, the thinking man's goddess
Charlize is at the top of my list of sexy and desirable women, she oozes sex unconsciously, blood spattered from gory fight scenes for much of the film she is the alpha leader of an immortal pack who respond to crisis around the planet and thru various ages, they get taken out and rise like a phoenix every time to overwhelm their opponents. Andromache of Scythia aka Andy (Charlize) has intervened in historical wars and conflicts throughout time. A super great action film with my girl, just the music left much to be desired.
J'accuse (2019)
Exquisite
An absolute pleasure to watch, absorb and digest each frame, immaculate composition each time, you could copy every frame and hang it on the wall as art. Slow, measured and unhurried at a pedestrian pace, Parisian cobbled streets, beautiful sets, immaculate interiors, perfect costumes, never a hair out of place. A political intrigue known as the Dreyfus Affair which was a stain on the French for over a decade, truly Polanski's magnus opus. You shall love and enjoy this enthralling capture of a Parisian time capsule.
The Laundromat (2019)
Rubbish
Poor coordination, unrelated characters and scenes suddenly appear, who are these people you wonder, then they vanish and others appear, a complete mishmash of scenes with very poor sets, Oldman and Banderas sitting in a little chicken coop crazy construction with cocktails in their hands, nope, bad, low budget movie devoid of merit. I switched off half way through and was sorry I didn't switch off after 3 minutes.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Rough
The most annoying man in the world would have made a better title, a hyper anally focused individual who has the particular knack of rubbing everyone up the wrong way is the foundation of the script. One is relieved when justice is finally served at the end of the movie, edge of the seat for the wrong reasons sort of movie.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
Magnificent
Gilliam always delivers good fantasy. A fabulous and entertaining movie in the best traditions, verging from the absolutely divine to the ridiculous in a delightful tapestry of events woven into a wonderful tale of imagination. Plummer was not a character I expected to find in a Gilliam tale, but his presence was masterful and remarkably commanding, altogether an unforgettable classic from the master.
The Irishman (2019)
Magnificent
Never shall Pacino, De Niro, Pesci and Keitel be seen in a movie again, this is a must see as this is the swansong for all those characters, for them to all be together is magnificent movie history. The plot is a faction based on the real disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa who was taken out by his erstwhile comrades and is historically correct, some peripheral details are debatable which does not detract from the overall enjoyment and fascination of the time frame depicted, altogether a fabulous magnus opus from Scorsese.
1945 (2017)
Exquisite
Moody black and white photography, immaculate period sets and costumes, exquisite attention to the smallest detail, slow pedestrian movement at 1945 pace, a bicycle ridden by the stationmaster, a motorbike and sidecar and a jeep are the only motorized vehicles seen in this quaint Hungarian village, the main vehicle focus is on a horse drawn cart which is central to the story. Cats, chickens and dogs complete the pastoral setting perfectly. Without a doubt a 10 for all aspects particularly the photography.
Time Bandits (1981)
Magnificent
An absolute delight of fiction and impossibility, a renegade band of dwarfs who have escaped from the service of the supreme being with a map of time holes leap out of a boys bedroom cupboard at night, take him on their adventures as time travelers and slip from one time to another. Cleese as Robin Hood, Connery as a fireman all add spice to a marvelous adventure which includes looting from Napoleon and cigar chomping on the Titanic. The chief dwarf David Rappaport shines as the central figure in this iconic Gilliam tale of imagination.
Anna (2019)
Magnificent
Brilliant interplay between various spies with several surprises stacked on several other surprises with the biggest surprise at the very end. Loads of murders executed, the piles of bodies attributed to Sasha Luss in this movie should stack fairly high as she is the new killer kid on the block.
Most impressive and entertaining action movie.
A Luc Besson masterpiece.
The Jackal (1997)
Fabulous
A real thriller from beginning to end, superb acting from Gere, Poitier and Willis, but the real star must be the director from whom nothing close to this has been seen before or since. Only negative comment is there is no sexy babe for eye candy, the women are all hard luck love stories. Improbable is the inclusion of an American FBI (Poitier) in the Russian team at the height of the cold war.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Magnificent
Apart from several scenes shot out in the freezing cold snow, the primary scenes for this movie are set inside a log cabin. Diverse characters and conversations keep you on the edge of your seat for some really gruesome exchanges of violence.
All the actors shine faultlessly in their roles without exception but Samuel Jackson outshines them all, a Tarantino masterpiece not to be missed.
Long Shot (2019)
Fabulous Charlize
This movie showcases Charlize Theron (silent h) and everyone else is just background music. Her presidential aspirations are the foundation of this movie which plays out on various international stages and events with the assistance of a script writer from hell and her childhood. Theron is the eye candy for this show and the script is merely a shadow to her shining performance.
The Tourist (2010)
Sexy Jolie
Jolie as usual is mesmerizing you with sexiness in each shot, so just watching for the eye candy is enough reason to check-in to this plot, fabulous scenes in Venice is the other reason which shall keep you enthralled, Depp is very under the radar in this scenario and almost stays in the shadows of Jolie who shines all the time. An almost James Bond sort of film which is a compliment.
Ripley's Game (2002)
Magnificent
A flawless performance by Malkovich who plays a dealer in art forgeries, his sidekick Winstone plays as always an oaf who lacks the polish to do the front of house sales. Malkovich take over as director of this movie two thirds of the way through production and with that makes his debut as a director with flying colours. Worthwhile watching this tale with great photography and exquisite detail of sets and scenes.
Polar (2019)
Fabulous noir cult genre
Off the wall limp wristed characters with painted lips and full make, interspersed with scantily clad sexy vixens comprise the directors of a Murder for hire organization. Mads Mikkelson plays a hitman who takes on one last job prior to his retirement with unexpected surprises along the way which forms the basis of the plot. Mikkelson's dead pan monochromatic behaviour contrasts sharply with the exaggerated gestures and over the top camp reactions from the crazy's which makes this movie an absolute pleasure to watch.
The Proposition (2005)
Fabulous
An Australian 'Western' which makes all others look like Sunday school picnics. Apart from Ray Winstone, it was difficult to tell the actors apart as they all had a very dodgy weather beaten grizzled look, long matted hair and beards with faces that looked they had been made from old leather. Dark and dirty, Creased and wrinkled with deep furrows was the signature look for everyone, the goodies (actually there were none), the baddies, the cops and robbers all looked identical with little to distinguish them from another.
Red Sparrow (2018)
Sexy and tantalizing
Jennifer Lawrence as sexy Dominika who gets set up by a family member who sends her off to the Soviet Sparrow seduction school for agents where Charlotte Rampling plays a very controlling matron. Most enjoyable and fascinating scenarios are played out which keep you on the edge of your seat most of the time. Lawrence exudes sex with a capital S throughout the show which is the glue which cements the plot, a compelling and riveting spy tale with a surprise ending you would never have guessed.
Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House (2017)
Rubbish
Great story with one of the best actors (Liam Neeson) with the worst script and worse director make a bad combo. Do not waste your time watching this drivel, unclear how a story so good that it brought down a president could be annihilated to the bad extent that this movie has. The shooting of scenes was amateurish, you needed a torch to see what was going on in each take as the lighting was poor. A complete waste of time.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Magnificent
Gary Oldman and Bruce Willis with the beautiful and scintillating Milla Jovovich makes for a great cast, that she spends considerable time semi naked is an added attraction, the three dimensional rush hour traffic is a scene that is absolutely unforgettable shall remain in my mind and defines this movie. The out of this world sets are something which completely mesmerizes everyone, complemented by outrageous costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier makes this movie visually stupendous in every way. You shall just love it.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Magnificent
Belfort (DiCaprio) is retrenched as a broker and joins a dodgy two-bit operation which soon gets to small for him, he is joined by Azoff (Jonah Hill) and they set up their own firm which grows into a massive con game, punting dodgy worthless paper stocks which attracts the attention of the feds. Margot Robbie as Naomi Lapaglia provides the required eye candy for the plot with the expected disaster for Beaufort's marriage as he transforms into a gangster. You've never seen crazy fantastic parties like this before.
Scarface (1983)
Cocaine baron
Al Pacino is always a pleasure to watch and this movie is no exception, lots of bad talk, loads and loads of bloody violence, great eye candy in the form of Michelle Pfeiffer at her slinkiest best as a gangsters show piece. The Cuban historical perspective indicated by Pacino in a Florida refugee camp and his release and rise as a mover and shaker in the flourishing Florida cocaine import and retail distribution business, with commensurate rivalry and associated expected violence.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Magnificent
A really good cops and robbers prohibition movie, De Niro and his fellow desperados are of course the baddies, James Woods plays the baddest of the baddies and Elizabeth McGovern plays the sexy female in an intriguing tale of children who run a gang who mature, sellout and fallout. This is a captivating and entertaining almost two hours of the best of Sergio Leone's direction with very convincing sets, cars and costumes which are great as a backdrop to the unfolding events, accompanied by evocative melodies by maestro Ennio Morricone.
Léon (1994)
Fabulous
This movie has the right ingredients for a pot boiler: Gary Oldman who I love to hate as he always depicts some bad ass delinquent, Jean Reno who is amazing as a 'cleaner' which is a euphemism for a professional hitman and Natalie Portman as a wise ass child who is barely a teenager in this movie. Her family getting wiped out and she gets 'adopted' by the Cleaner under protest. Her character Mathilde is set for revenge on the butcher which she fails to achieve herself, but attains by proxy and wins in the end.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Delicious + Irrestible
You cannot resist watching a movie with Uma Thurman, Samuel Jackson, John Travolta, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi and Christopher Walken, plus you definitely cannot resist watching a movie directed and part written by Quentin Tarantino. So, nuff said, one of the all time iconic must see movies.
Being There (1979)
Best Sellers
Peter Sellers is known for playing several roles depicting several different personalities simultaneously in his movies, in this movie he plays a man with no personality whatsoever, his simple explanations and answers to questions are misconstrued and expanded beyond what was intended, which leads to unintended consequences which constitute the comedy of this film, truly an outstanding portrayal of Jerzy Kosinsksi's work with excellent directing by Hal Ashby.
