District 9 (2009)
Great Movie Despite Minor Flaws
Despite some issues with the plot and that it is silly to assume that Americans will leave the alien tech to some corporation from South Africa, this movie is still awesome. Plot is original, performances are great, especially the lead. It is fun to watch, it is not dumb, it has great CGI where needed. It was just exhilarating to watch.
I am not so sure a successor movie is a good idea, though. If they are going to do it, it will probably end like "independence day". I hope not...
"District 9" also helped me to create a successful rule on whom to get movie advice:
-> If one calls this movie "a bad movie", I don't trust a word they say about movies.
WALL·E (2008)
overrated
This is a decent movie, a fun watch for the whole family but it is vastly overrated. I have not seen anything so original about it, it is full of clichés and it is very predictable. It is not fun as other Pixar movies, it is supposed to be "deep" instead, but I just don't buy it. The love of Wall-e for the female robot feels unnatural and unreal. The producers' effort to depict a "cute speechless love" was largely successful for most of the people, but I find it pretentious. Well, that is me, though. There is a good chance you will like this movie a lot.
Still, this is the best animated movie ever? According to IMDb Top 250 it is. No, freaking way! It might barely make Top 20.
Midnight Express (1978)
come on!!!
I finally sat down and watch this movie when I caught it on AMC. I have heard in detail about how it depicted my nation as evil pigs so I was not really surprised with (1) Extremely funny prison.(I assure you even in 70s prisons in Turkey have actual concrete buildings with water, heat and electricity and beds for prisoners.) (2) Constant depiction of Turks as fat sweaty pigs with no good in their heart. (3) Funny use of "Turkish" and especially long speech the prosecutor (4) all other stuff.
So I was not surprised but it is still horrible to watch your country being humiliated with lies. But it was OK, I was able to take it. UNTIL...
Until, Billy's father said "Turkish Food sucks" -or something like that. I could not help screaming to the TV: "F. you." Come on, this is Turkish food, a thousand year tradition that brings Mediterranean and middle east food together, one of world's two intercontinental cuisines(alongside french) And an American- from a place with no cuisine, just stuff from all over the world and burger and steak- says it sucks.
I know it is silly to get angry over this kind of stuff, but it was the point I could not help it. It shows how Stone and Parker are biased and ignorant.
War of the Worlds (2005)
A possible explanation for the camcorder issue..
Come on! WOTW is a fine movie, shot with excellent direction. I have never felt in action during a movie despite the fact that I felt threatened by aliens! Spielberg does his job with great respect and wisdom. Sorry 'artistic' people! But he is kind of a genius, always innovating something. I've watched -maybe- a thousand movies, but I go to the theater rarely due to financial constraints, yet Spielberg always makes me stretch my budget. This is why he makes a lot of money! As a fan of many kind movies including 'artistic' ones, I cannot see the reason for the hate against Spielberg. He absolutely loves and respects what he does and more importantly he cares about and respects the audience. Finding problems in a movie is very easy, I count them to double digit numbers for most of the movies.
For the CAMCORDER issue; I should say it cannot be a mistake. I am not a very technical guy but all the things broken down by the lightnings have either connection to the local electrical network or have electrical engines( for example, a watch or a car-cars have small electrical engines to start) But camcorder does not have any of this.. I cannot believe such a stupid mistake exist in a so perfectly shot movie. Still, I can be mistaken..
For the plot, I should acknowledge the weakness of the end, however it is very analogous to the ending of Wells' book. I have always liked the book and as a fan I found the script successful in the sense that it follows the book (secretly). If it were focusing a bunch of people as in Deep Impact, the result will be a betrayal to the book and will lead to another Independence Day.
Cast was fine! Cruise is an intelligent guy, he knows in which movie to play or invest.
Above all, what makes this movie very good is that it is excellently shot. From the first to last 10 minutes, audience, at least me, is absolutely thrilled by the reality of things in a science fiction movie. Everyone should admit that Spielberg is a very talented guy...
I like Spielberg science-fictions..
edit after couple of years: I cannot believe I called Cruise intelligent!
Hulk (2003)
Bad
I watched this movie alone, maybe this is why I hated it. However, I still hate it.
I loved Ang Lee in CT&HD, that movie was an amazing combination of aesthetics and fun. I even did not laugh in the flight scenes when rest of the theatre was laughing..
HOWEVER, Hulk is supposed to be a movie for fun. This is the reason for the existence of comics. If I wait the guy to be Hulk for an hour, or I am drowned into the psychological bullshit, then I feel that I am not having fun.. As someone expecting to have fun after this particular movie for apparent reasons, I hated it due to what it made me deprived of. FUN! -except for 20 minutes..
I respect Ang Lee.. I like sophisticated movies.. But when I go to the theatre for fun, I need to get it. This is an comics adaptation and so it should not be so serious. ( I can handle that seriousness in an another movie not having a green ogre throwing tanks)
Turist Ömer Uzay Yolunda (1973)
On Sadri Alisik and Turist Omer in the Star Trek
This movie is a masterpiece among Turkish movies in the sense that it may be the first example of making fun of another movie or TV show. Foreigners will probably not understand that the movie solely intents to make you laugh, and that Turist Omer(Alisik) makes fun of and teases all that legendary Star Trek characters.Sadri Alisik is a true legend in Turkey, not a dirty looking 'Muslim' guy, who has great talent, not only in physical comedy but also verbally. The movie has no 'religious' motives, Omer's transfer to Enterprise is a coincidence which we can see any movie, anyway God won't be any peculiar in a science-fiction, either. opening hands and praying to God is gesture in Turkey which has no religious meaning. As it can be anticipated, you must be a Turk or good Turkish speaker to understand the simple but powerful humor in this movie. Insulting a dead legend and millions of people due to trendy "Islamfobia" and poor understanding is not fair. Here, I am saying that if you do not speak Turkish or have a Turkish friend to assist you through the movie, do not watch it, otherwise you will fall in the pit in which "one of the North American comments" is, the pit of prejudice..
Late Note: It is true that there are stolen scenes in the movie, then SUE the dead man. What could they do to show a spaceship in space? And do not forget that the movie is a free advertisement of the TV-series..
