The Umbrella Man (2016)
Original and well done
I was really pleasantly surprised by this film.
The acting is solid, the plot is compelling, the time period: faithfully rendered, the idea is original, and the cinematography is exceptional.
Some very impactful editing as well.
Lots of emotion, good character development, etc.
I was really impressed by the way it all came together at the end - so rare to see a film with a strong, satisfying ending.....
Recommended for people looking for something a bit different.
Judy & Punch (2019)
EXCELLENT & original
My wife and I just LOVED this film.
So great to watch such an original approach, such great characters, amazing sets and wardrobe, and a story that is equal parts a view of historical life, and a surreal, mystical bit of Lore.
The music choices were the only thing that truly stood out and felt out of place. Not that they bothered me - they just seemed incongruous. The music selected really made the film more abstract and strange, adding as much as it distracted, if not more.
Nice to see a strong feminine perspective and so many little lightly veiled, ironic events and perspectives.
I could watch movies like this everyday. Right in my 'wheelhouse'.
A thrilling discovery, that I suspect will stay in my mind for a long, long time.
Ignore the negative reviews (which almost prevented me from giving this a shot).
To me - this is spectacularly fresh, original and poignant cinema.
The Souvenir (2019)
OK, dysfunctional relationships are complex and negative - WE GET IT!!
I had high hopes for this film, partially because T. Swindon was involved.
What a disappointment.
I appreciate the idea that the actors are improvising a great deal, and because of that it creates very 'real/authentic' type interactions. That's about the only positive thing I can find to say about this film.
It just goes on and on.
It's called 'editing' - give it a try! You could easily just delete the majority of the scenes from this film without having much effect on it's affect, intensity or appeal.
I realize that it's based on the director's past, but come on - just because it's important to you, doesn't mean that anyone else will benefit from seeing this portrayed on film. In my opinion, it isn't exceptional or very original, or entertaining, or important in any way.
I have no idea who the director feels will benefit from (or enjoy watching) this film.
I'm stumped.
Sadly, I have to be honest - it's one of the least impactful or interesting films I've ever seen.
See (2019)
perhaps my favourite series - ever - period!
I rarely write reviews, and made my living as a film maker for quite a few years.
I watch loads of series and movies, but when I came across SEE, I was just blown away.
The imagination and creativity throughout this whole production, far exceeds 90% of the work being done out there.
Interesting characters, original story line and backstory developments, all woven together to continually draw the viewer deeper into a brave new world.
To me, it's just magnificent film making.
I love the fact that overall, there's a lot of quiet, waiting, subtlety, nuance, whispering, and an underlying sense of calm which is foreboding and haunting.
Visually very powerful and intense, allowing the characters to bring this strange world to life, as they continue their exploration.
No safety zone, no home, no comfort - it is a 'quest' project - and one of the most unique ones I've ever had the pleasure to get immersed in.
Bravo! ...a truly rare gem in modern entertainment.
Ánima (2020)
Absolutely sublime and inspiring
I rarely write reviews (people's opinions generally being worth so little) but I had to take a moment to review this title.
We don't get many opportunities to check out art like this, ...from our computers or even our mobile devices, wherever and whenever we like - and all for free!
Anima is unlike anything I've seen before.
I love modern dance, Contact Improv, etc. and find this choreography idyllic support content for Thom York's audio track. The sound design itself feels quite spontaneous and improvised - free, flowing and loosely structured. The choreography employs some very unpredictable, unprecedented movements, utilizing physical staging technics and effects not available in any traditional live dance performance venue. The lighting, visual effects, camera work, use of locations all come together to usher the viewer on an enigmatic and surreal sojourn. The destination is unimportant. Not only is it very original and refreshing in many ways, to me, it seems to relate aspects of modern life and human connections.
What an awesome gift for all of us - inspired and inspiring, flowing and kinetic.
Not offering anything obviously specific, really - perhaps a chance to be still and witness something beautiful for no other reason, than because someone has gone to great pains and expense to create it for us.
...watched and experienced it with awe, excitement and serious Gratitude
