The Florida Project (2017)
Don't Bother
Do yourself a favor and pass this one up. Wish I had. It's a sad dissertation on the poor and incapable people on the fringes of American society, and it has no redeeming qualities. It's disturbing and depressing, because it's so real. I just don't know how these movies get so many awards. This is not entertainment to me. Further, I'm sorry someone let these kids take these rolls. For shame. You are contributing to the situations you portray. I am thoroughly disgusted! Maybe I'm being narrow minded, but this is my honest opinion, for whatever it's worth. Gotta get the character count up to 600!
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Wow. What a Disappointment!
Even great acting and cinematography don't save this one. I think it's the most depressing and grisly thing I've ever wasted my time on. That's two hours I will never get back or get out of my mind. I was expecting a light hearted romp across the Irish countryside, after two longtime friends have a falling out, with no explanation. We are lead to believe they will have a drunken brawl, make up, and laugh their way off into the Irish sunset. Once again, we are the victim of manipulative trailers, that suggest a storyline, then don't deliver. Don't go expecting another "Waking Ned Devine". It isn't.
Our Father (2022)
Shocking!
A shocking, true story of one arrogant, holier-than-thou fertility doctor, that grinds at the heart. Your mind says "How can this be?". Yet, it is. It's a raw story, hence the profanity. But it would have been better, without it.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
Forrest Gump of the 70s.
Uninteresting, disjointed, boring, and main characters who fail to connect with the viewer. I started squirming in my seat about half way thru. Not worthy of Best Picture. Who makes these nominations anyway?
Spencer (2021)
Pure Torture!
Well...that's four hours I'll never get back. Yeah, I know the movie was only two. But it took another two hours to get over the trauma. Never been so disappointed in a movie in my life!
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
I didn't see it.
I wish I could see the beauty and wonderful fantasy all of these moonstruck reviewers saw in this movie. I didn't see it. I watched the movie based on the high ratings and glowing reviews. But I didn't see anything but pain, cruelty, oppression and nightmares. Afterward I felt sad, depressed and upset over this violent, cruel world we live in. Wish I'd never watched it. Yuck is all I can say.
My Octopus Teacher (2020)
Simply Beautiful
This story is not like most documentaries. It's a beautiful, touching, yet gripping observation of the ocean and its inhabitants. And I am picky. I have a very narrow window of enjoyable entertainment. I won't waste my time on gore, violence, war, profanity, stupidity, sex and sexism. So, I don't have many choices! But this one hit all the right buttons. It is beautifully filmed and unbelievably emotional for a fish flick! Do yourself a favor. Just watch it.
Runaway Jury (2003)
Wow! What a Surprise.
I finished the book recently. And frankly, with so many characters and side plots, I got a bit confused about some things. So, I decided to rent the movie to clear up those issues. What a surprise I got! The movie is not the same story as the book! Just the same characters, pulling the same game, on a different trial, in a different location, with a different target, a new political message, and a completely different ending!! Had I not read the book, I probably would have liked this movie more, but since I was expecting something completely different, I was very disappointed. If you have read the book, don't see the movie. If you haven't read the book, take this version at face value. It has a good cast, good acting and a good plot, just not the one I was expecting.
Downton Abbey (2019)
Once a Fan...always a Fan!
If you were completely consumed by the series, the movie will not disappoint. It is everything you hoped for, and so much more. The original cast carrys their characters on to the next level, and in to the future. I will never get enough of Downton Abbey! Thank you for bringing the joy back.
Our Souls at Night (2017)
For Older Audiences Only
I was so looking forward to watching this movie. I've always been a big Robert Redford fan, and like Jane Fonda as well. I wanted to watch it because I am newly widowed myself, and thought I would connect with the characters. I was a bit disappointed in the story line, but found it enjoyable just the same. The acting was superb, filming was gorgeous, but I found the writing a little choppy. Occasionally, I found the time line of events a tad confusing, and overall the story a bit implausible. I doubt anyone would invite a stranger to sleep with them first, rather than suggest a cup of coffee, or lunch to start. Still, it is worth watching, if you are a senior yourself. Younger viewers would probably find it a little toward the pathetic side. I didn't connect with Addie and Louis the way I had hoped to, but Robert Redford is welcome to keep me company any time. He is my last surviving Hollywood idol. All the others have either died, or fallen off their pedestals!
The Last Brickmaker in America (2001)
A great story...a poor movie.
This movie had so much potential, yet all was lost in the production. They had big acting names (Sidney Portier, Piper Laurie), a good story line, beautiful setting, and a great moral. However, the main thought that comes to mind while watching is: why didn't they try to make this better? The dialog was poor, the acting poor, and the story line was disjointed. It left me with more questions than satisfaction. However...
Why is it that good, clean, for-everyone entertainment like this is always pushed aside to produce horrific, violent, foul and sex-driven movies? I would rather watch these poorly produced, poorly-filmed stories, than those that turn my stomach. But it could be so different!
Smart People (2008)
Boring!
I think this was possibly the most boring movie I have ever watched! I kept thinking that something grand was going to happen to salvage my time, but nothing ever did. I enjoyed the "snapshots" during the credits more than the entire movie that preceded them. Why didn't the writers/directors start the story at the end of the movie? Everything that happened before the love interest entered the picture, could have been told in 10 or 15 minutes. I agree the family was odd, and needed a new outlook on life, but did it really have to take the whole movie to say so? Guess I'm just not smart enough to figure out the appeal of these smart people. Sorry.
