Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
Every bit as flawed as its predecessor
People really like to hate this movie apparently. I don't see what makes this movie a 4.4 versus Space Jam's 6.5 though.
The animation in both is great. There's product placement. The story is sloppy. The acting is mediocre at best, at least from the main character. Voice acting is fine. They're both completely watchable, in fact they are fun movies.
I'd say the main thing that separates these is time. We have more realistic CG animation now, which makes this movie look higher budget than the original. I was surprised to find out that the difference in budget is not /that/ large (when accounting for inflation). It's about a $10M increase.
I think this movie deserves to be criticized but not to the point of completely glossing over its positives.
I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys cartoons, and doesn't take movies like this super seriously.
Rock Dog 2: Rock Around the Park (2021)
If you hate your kids, make them watch this
Where do I even begin with this one?
Rock Dog 2: Rock Around The Park did not need to exist. That's about as nice as I can put it.
It seems that not a single soul involved with the original production wanted to touch this one. It's pretty clear why.
The animation is very stiff. The characters often have a blank expression on their face, almost as if their minds blank out for a split second every so often. The colors are bleak and the rendering is very basic for what is supposed to be a feature.
When it comes to the story it is about the most generic and predictable drivel you can imagine. The surprises come in the form of new family members, which I can only imagine were added to uphold a facade of family values plucked straight from the 50's. Unsurprisingly we get a sprinkle of the classic boomer "Social Media Bad" morals. That was definitely the highlight of the movie because "I'm trending down" is not a sentence I thought I'd ever hear. It's embarrassing to watch this movie.
I was not planning to write a review for this movie, but I feel obligated after seeing the review page littered with what must be either Splash Entertainment employees or cult members praising this movie and recommending it for kids & families.
Do not make your kids watch this, 2021 has been a great year for animation, so pick something good like "Luca" or "Wish Dragon" instead. Better yet, watch the original "Rock Dog". It's pretty decent.
I want to recommend Rock Dog 2 specifically for you and your friends to laugh at, because it is a spectacular train wreck. Unfortunately it looks like there's a third movie coming, and at that point I'm afraid the joke may have gotten old.
Omae umasoudana (2010)
The style makes up for a lot.
Normally I wouldn't give a movie like this such a high score, it didn't actually blow me away in the sense that a cult classic feature film would. But where it really shone for me was with the art style and the voice acting. You've heard this story before, an adopted child does not belong and ventures out to find their roots. It branches out a little bit after that but not a lot. Either way, yes the story is pretty typical for a children's animation but none the less it's a very enjoyable watch. It's only been a few hours since I watched it and I think I'll be re-watching it a short while after posting this review.
It's yet another example of kids entertainment being done right, because anyone can enjoy it just like a kid would.
