The Fall Guy (2024)
Celebration of behind the camera
What a great popcorn film this is. Action scenes are diligently executed. Acting is over the top. Of course Ryan Gosling is doing the superstar Ryan Gosling things. He is freaking awesome. I can see him easily replacing Tom Cruise as THE action star.
Emily Blunt is a scene stealer too. At some point film might bore you with long dialogs but don't forget that this is also a romantic film.
The best thing about this film is they are constantly reminding the audience that all these actions films couldn't be possible to make without awesome people working behind the camera. We should all be thankful for their hard-work. And yes, as it was mentioned in the film, there should be awards for the film crews! They absolutely don't get enough credit!
Cheers to them 🥂
Ripley (2024)
What's wrong with Hollywood?
I barely finished the first episode to be honest. I did not like the way its been shot. I mean, imagine going to one of the beautiful countries on earth and filming in black and white. The first two versions of this story were shot by showing us the mesmerizing scenery alongside good acting performances.
Yep, acting is another issue here. I don't see/feel any type of chemistry between the characters at all. It feels like they are all on their acting breakthrough. Even Andrew Scott who was the main reason for me to tune in. He gave the dullest performance of his career in my opinion. Such a shame.
The third reason may disturb many and even trigger some anger issues for others(idgaf) but I really cannot see a woman as a man. I simply can't. I tried, I swear. Especially, if that person is a talentless nepobaby. If this was a stage play I maybe able to look away although since its clearly not and this is the third adaptation of our beloved story I couldn't unsee what I saw there. A skinny woman is acting tough... Ridiculous stuff...
Dear Hollywood executives, if you are reading this please stop participating in the culture war. You are only damaging yourself. Thanks.
Chouchou (2022)
Way better than the Hollywood version
I am speechless. I think for a while I won't watch anything in order to digest what I watched. Everyone from the little kids to the characters with lesser screen time than 20 minutes in total touched my heart.
This isn't just about a lust between two ethically unusual people, its also about exploration of human feelings. More you pay attention more deeper you dive into their lives, personalities.
I feel like I just finished a long aired show with 6 seasons each episode an hour long. The acting, camera work, script, dialogs work in harmony.
There are maybe some people see this as grooming or an advertisement for pedophilia I suggest those to rethink and watch this show from the perspective of each characters. Even from the eyes of the children can say a lot more.
I watched the American version "A Teacher" years ago and I can confidently say that the Canadian version is incomprehensibly far superior in every possible way. So if you can't decide and are okay with reading subtitles for a couple of hours then this one should be your choice.
The Dreamers (2003)
The film not only craves but screams for gay scenes
I don't understand why on earth the filmmaker thought showing gay scenes would be too much. What's at stake? There's a disgusting incest relationship, parents who are everything but the title, and a living condition that is dirtier than riot-infested streets. Yet, Matthew and Theo didn't even properly kiss. The trio didn't even share that much energy. It feels like there's a huge chunk of the film is missing where the boys got closer and left Isabelle outside this time. They gave us a couple of crumbs of what could've been the key part of the film in Theo's room. It always felt like Isabelle was psychotic. I wished Matthew and Theo would become a thing and Isabelle would accept the fact and keep smoking in her well-made bed alone. Matthew and Isabelle never felt right. Theo was the most sane one in the family. A huge missed opportunity. Pity.
3 Body Problem (2024)
Bad adaptation by two the biggest clowns of the industry
I don't understand why they are still employed after ruining one of the greatest shows of all time. Just because they got early seasons of GoT somewhat right it doesn't mean they are talented. The same goes here. The show is overhyped by jobless, tasteless people who have never watched anything outside of Netflix I bet. I see signs from Dumb and Dumber. Just unnecessary spices to the mix. Yes, the last time it left the kind of bad taste in my mouth so now I can smell it from 100 yards, unfortunately. The story arcs are ambiguous. The character developments are all over the place. I understand the fans of the book are excited to see their beloved characters coming to life but the show lacks the writer's spark. The absence of talent in the script is evident.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Better than the first one
I am gonna write precise answers cuz I am not a fan of this franchise, thus, I don't wanna get into details and today I watched it just because I was depressed and needed a distraction. Initially, I was gonna wait for home release.
Was it better than the first one? Yes,
How much I enjoyed it? 50%,
How much I get bored? 50%,
Can you call this the best sequel of all time? No,
Is it on the same level with LoTR? Hell no,
Is it better than Avatar? No,
Are there lots of unexplained plot holes? Plenty,
Do they become annoying throughout the film? Hell yeah,
Does the sequel require prior literature knowledge? Probably(will never read the books),
Will I rewatch it? Nope.
Silent Night (2023)
Not every revenge film has to be John Wick
This film is combination of two old genres: action and silent cinema. Its not perfect but I have seen a lot of movies full of nonsense dialogues that wish to be half as much interesting this year. I enjoyed learning about the context through just visuals. It was simple, straightforward and easy to execute. Action scenes were fun. Yes, this is not John Wick. It doesn't has to be. This guy's son has been killed by gangsters. John Wick confesses that he just wants to kill all of them as if he has nothing better to do at some point. But this one has a bigger motivation imo. Despite all the preparation the writer still keeps him flawed because HE IS NOT A TRAINED KILLER and John Woo shows us this whenever he can. Brain is just a grieving father who tries to do his best. Give the man credit for his efforts at least.
The Curse (2023)
Don't get confused by review-bombs
This is the most personal show by Nathan Fielder. I love everything about it! You laugh, you ponder, you empathise with the characters but most importantly you can see pieces from ur life in there! They call it "cliche" although making fun of cliches is the literal purpose of this show! People who call it "bad" are still the ones who find Jim Carrey funny I bet. It's weird a bit but considering we are being bombarded by franchise spinoffs these days, plus, its a show from Nathan freaking Fielder this feels like a breath of fresh air. Oh, also, if you are gonna mumble "Ew, there are Jewish people" then it's time for you to GET A LIFE!
Death at a Funeral (2007)
They don't make these anymore
At the end of the film, I felt sad. I felt that because it reminded me 2000s. How everything was simple and people were less desperate(yes, despite the 2008 crisis). Studios were less hopeless to bet their money only on big films and let small-budget gems like this shine. I am just sick of hearing the buzzwords like "blockbuster", and "franchise". We need more personal, humane projects like this. What happened to us? Why we are killing our own taste? I don't remember laughing at a film this much the last time. A film that does not have a big budget or "important" political commentaries. Gosh, politics is everywhere now, isn't it?
The Holdovers (2023)
An early Christmas gift
It's good to see that small-budget but cinema-defining projects are still being made. This one hits directly our hearts. After six years of absence, Alexander Payne made a tremendous comeback. One of the best films of 2023. I smiled, I laughed, I felt sorrow, I cried and did all these on repeat again and again. This year came like a fresh breath for non-franchise films. Of course, there is a place for every kind. There definitely should be! But just like Jodie Foster said, the time for superhero films to keep the spotlight was generously longer. I can see The Holdovers easily becoming a new Christmas cult classic. A must-watch for families.
Thanksgiving (2023)
The fun that I didn't know I needed
Have you ever been to a party that you didn't want to go before but once u arrived u had so much fun that u didn't even expect from yourself? Well, Eli Roth created the definition of the saying. I love old style slasher films and oh boy this one does delivers that. I had so much fun. You don't have to think about the details. Just enjoy the exciting, gory, stupid ride. After I left the theatre I felt energetic and positive even though I literally sat through utterly imaginative killing methods. It's one of those don't ask, just watch films. Especially, if you are an Eli Roth fan this one is definitely for you! Go check it out on the biggest screen possible. It's worth it!
The Marvels (2023)
A forgettable sequel
Even writing a review is extremely pointless as we all knew what we were expecting months before but here I am. They even themselves admitted it. The film is a huge disappointment. The plot is all over the place. Actions sequences were sometimes good but sometime were so dumb I didn't know where to look, where to pay attention. I like how they tried to catch the old marvel magic. Yes. They tried. But they utterly failed. Feige pulled off "wait until the post credit scene to get excited cuz the film itself is boring" trick again. And it wasn't a "wow" for me at least. The theatre was silent throughout and after the film. No one even made a giggling sound. Dead silence. Jokes were landing facedown to the ground every time a character made one. That's right. Every character there is comic relief. And I absolutely don't wanna talk about acting.
Kimetsu no Yaiba: No Matter How Many Lives (2022)
This show needs to stay at one tempo
Although I mostly like the anime but in reality I have a love and hate relationship with the show. The first season was superb. The mugen train arc was intense and good! But Entertainment district arc is a wasted opportunity for me. In the first 5 episode instead of making a mystical aura by making us guess who is the demon they just revealed her like that amongst endless boring unfunny goofy scenes/characters that backed by utterly life-sucking flashbacks which I am sure no one cared! I found myself hitting the forward button quite often this time. I am sure I missed like NOTHING by not watching callbacks of side characters that I will probably will never see again. After the first part they were really fiddling around before they gave us decent fight scenes. Although they screwed the hype up at the end by using a nonsense excuse to bring back the characters. Then what the hell was those building up for?? Also the show runners need to decide whether they wanna make a goofy anime with comedic relief characters or a dark show that occasionally stirs up one or two jokes but mostly carries on with serious theme. I am sick of hearing some deafening screech from an annoying unknown character in the moment of a heavy outcome. Anyway. I am started to lose interest in this one tbh.
Ps. I haven't watched the season 3 yet but if the first few episodes are exactly like I described above then I am dropping this anime for good.
Kimetsu no Yaiba: Things Are Gonna Get Real Flashy! (2022)
give us a decent fight already!
So far we have been presented flashbacks, unimportant callbacks to past events that include the characters I absolutely dont care about. This new arc is such a drag. They have been beating grass the whole time. They really giving all they got to make this show comedic. But it isnt working. Especially zenitsu which has been annoying me to death the whole time. This anime needs seriousness so badly. They need to bring back the first season's dark tone. Fun stuff just doesnt suit with this anime. Maybe there is a little room for that but thats just it. A little. I am getting bored too often and cant wait to reach to the fighting episodes asap!
Heels (2021)
The show that doesn't see enough light!
It's sad to see a show like this doesn't get the recognition it deserves! I have never watched anything about wrestling but here I am writing a review! It's not just about wrestling! The show sucks you in from the very beginning with its cleverly crafted drama between brothers and the characters around them. Almost every one of them got a chance to shine! Clearly, the characters' development was the top priority of the writers! Jack Spade(Stephen Amell) is the heart of the show! A struggling family man who is desperately trying to provide for his loved ones also be present with them alongside keeping his relationship with his man-baby brother in the line whilst working in two acutely distinguished jobs simultaneously! I love him! Also Crystal and Bobby! Willie is becoming one of my favs after Bill(yeah, he is an asshole but at least he proved that he has a heart!). I am on the second episode of the season 2 and I really hope Starz will greenlight the season 3!
UPDATE: I finished the season 2 and I am looking forward to the season 3! STARZ needs to announce it ASAP!
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
A Miles Morales film without Miles Morales
It may surprise you but this film and Last of Us the show are very similar in terms of having the soul purpose to serve only the geeky-fans. No doubt that Spider-geeks will be appreciate this self-indulgence, they are sure to spend hours rewatching and pausing it to catalogue all of the many allusions to six decades' worth of comics, cartoons, live-action films and video games. Non-geeks are just getting confused. Whereas, Into the Spider-verse was referring to almost everyone who just love our beloved web-slinger. There are so many cameos that overwhelm you at some point. We also cannot see Miles until almost an hour after the film starts. Wheel-spinningly slow long conversations, overbloated character presentations stole the time from our Miles. The Spot, despite being the principal villain, is absent for much of it. But the most flagrant example of the film's excesses is that, even though it's nearly two-and-a-half hours long, it only gets halfway through its story. Despite all these issues I can say I am satisfied at the end. Miles had a brilliantly written character arc even though for the most part his journey was shadowed by other's stories. It ends on a cliffhanger, and a caption announces that Miles will return in a further instalment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. No wonder it feels more exhausting than exhilarating.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
"Avengers level threat" my a**
Quantumania feels and looks like CW made a budget TV movie about aliens with a few renowned actors for 8 years old kids but parent attendance is a must so they can let kids know that this is just a bad movie every time the kids get
confused by the plot as sometimes adults even can't tell what's going on there.
The beginning didn't start bad actually but nothing much happened. Hank has a big tank of genius ants and Hope is more successful than ever. The only thing standing out among mid performances was Cassie. Not in a good way though.
Another nosy, arrogant, unlikeable "prodigy" girl from Marvel's new strong female characters factory swarmed
the whole phase four with its annoying karens. The other problem is that the actress herself has zero talent. Truly. Her sadness was as much authentic as Kim Kardashian's tears when she cried for her lost earrings. I guess Brie
Larson left a huge impression so they decided to hire another talentless mean girl boss.
In the second act, there was this embarrassingly unfunny joke about "holes" made by a poorly rendered bubbly cgi being and the joke has been even mentioned in the middle of a serious fight in the third act. They also
introduced a telepath guy without explaining what type of character he was: mutant? Witch?, inhuman?, they said
nothing about him but they used him as a macguffin to read the mind of a robot(is it possible? None has been mentioned) to help to crack some code for literally 3 seconds. I can swear I saw a broccoli-headed character in close-up several times and I thought it will have some purpose later but nothing happened. Do you remember when they showed us Bill Murray in the first trailer so we can think that he gonna be part of something big? Yes, he was there but only for 5 minutes. Maybe even less. Then they killed him off and that was it. I guess he was there so Hank can make Janet jealous by saying he also had someone when she admitted that she has been screwing Bill Murray for 30 years bcs she has "needs". But in the end, they turned their backs and never mentioned this again. What a family.
When finally they gave us Kang in the third act I saw the desperation to give more to the character in the eyes of
talented Jonathan Majors. He delivered more than what was written in the script, I am sure. Although bcs of the lazy writing the character did not intimidate me. They gave us a glimpse of what he has been up to before he was cast out to the quantum realm but the writer made the same mistake that has plagued the whole phase four. He relied on the power of words instead of visual proof. What Janet saw in her visions when she touched Kang's machine was not enough. Although why on earth the man who can travel through time and the multiverse didn't make his machine to respond to him only? That's weird right?, whatever. Even when he captured the rallies he just imprisoned them. No actual killing took place until the last 20 minutes.
By the time we arrived there, I was expecting him to kill some of the main characters so Scott can have an even bigger reason to fight against him. It didn't occur, unfortunately. The only things he murdered were a few unknown cgi characters that I don't even remember what they looked like. Remember I mentioned Hank had a tank of smart ants? Yes, they travelled with their daddy to the quantum realm and immediately created an enormous advanced society with the power of socialism as Hank himself explained(not a joke, this what he actually said) so they can turn into a plot device at the end to fight against Kang's super-advanced robots. When they ask Hank how did this happen, his answer started with "somehow" and after that, I didn't pay attention much tbh bcs it was nonsensical and boring. In the end, even Scott wasn't sure of what exactly he did there. Also, my biggest disappointment was neither Kang nor the others mentioned any connection between Kang's machine, the ten rings of Shang Chi and Kamala's bangles.
That was the most expected thing by almost everyone but I guess MCU got tired of their own formula. But they are forgetting that very formula forged MCU in the first place.
Quantumania is promising something good in the beginning but gets off of its trails very quickly. It's a very disappointing misfire at the beginning of a new phase. I am not even sure about the Guardians now. But definitely gonna skip The Marvels.
I gave 3/10 only because of my respect for a few actors.
Infinity Pool (2023)
I am intrigued, I wanna go to La Tolqa
This is a geniusly crafted disturbing movie that can force you to doubt every action of the characters in the film. There are several twists within the plot. Some of them is enough to drop your jaw unintentionally, some of them makes you angry, some of them makes you even doubt your own predictions. There are subplots too and they also very well fitted with the story. La Tolqa is a fictional place but they didn't just stop with the name. They created a whole new country with it's own alphabets, traditions etc. Thus, the place just sucks you in from very first moment. The director gave us all the disturbing nuances in the most pleasant way possible. I can say I saw everything in this film. We need these kinda pictures. It's really enjoyable to look into the deepest dark fun part of a person's mind.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
An incredible sequel!!
This movie has to be named as the celebration of art of 2022 bcs it was an incredible movie. Great story arc, very clever character usage, and potent character development. The movie was dragging you alongside bcs the stakes were too personal this time. Almost everything about it was personal. It is like Endgame but with a more beautiful and exciting version. You can never get bored thanks to the mesmerising nature portrayals. Finally, I watched a real fantasy/action cinema after a long time. I didn't know that I was hungry for this. Probably I am gonna watch this several times. Thank you James Cameron.
Wednesday (2022)
No believable reasons to stick around
I stopped watching after the fourth episode bcs I didn't get convinced by Wednesday's reason to stay at school and play Nancy Drew. Also, I really would like to see scenes from Wednesday's dark deeds as she describes them or just flashbacks, not just empty mentions as if they are gonna make us believe everything she says. If you wanna keep ppl watching then show them the stories. People are here to watch, not listen to tales. Some characters just don't fit the story. Especially Wednesday's roommate. I wish the whole series had been given to Tim Burton to write/direct. Corporate agendas are clearly showing themselves. Pity.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Message for the director
Just remove Gal Gadot from this film and make sure no one casts her ever again and it will be alright. Maybe she is a nice person but absolutely not an ACTRESS. Period.
Nightmare Alley (2021)
Worthy to watch
The film couldn't settle down on the first part, not quite. It forces you to think the other way. Although in the second act things start to warm up. And it ends with a nice conclusion. Combination of talented actors and nice classic-noir environment enrich the screenplay. A decent work by a talented producer/writer. We need this kinda movies other than superhero stuff.
Scream (2022)
Nice one!
I just came back from the theatre and my thoughts are a bit confused. The plot itself was nicely done. You can somewhat predict one of the killers (I think its not a spoiler to tell that there are two killers because this is in the dna of the movie). And I found the motivation a bit lazy and nonchalant. Overall, as characters also mentioned in the movie, a good requel.
Dune (2021)
An empty beauty
After two years I realised that I only watched Dune once at the theatre and after that I haven't picked up again. At the time I was so hyped for it. Everything looked incredible. But now I understand how hollow this film was. Big film with a poor script. Seriously, if you take away sound design and cgi there will be nothing much left. They want us to believe the first part of this film is a whodunnit. That is if you are familiar with the book bcs the film itself doesn't take time to develop the characters. They are more like plot devices rather than parts of the story. There's always some development happening in the background that occasionally being mentioned. But never was presented to us. I acknowledge Timothee's presence but I don't remember his performance. Why two families have a feud in between, why some characters are way they are...These are not problems only for the fans of the book. Every scene, every foreseen visions are teasing some upcoming battle in the future that will not take part until the third film I assume. Dune is suffering from what the most modern films plagued by: Franchise obsession. Making hours long big teasers to hype up for the next rather than one single great story with a decent conclusion. Films are being treated as money-making machines by the companies who "ordered" them. These days we rarely see a vision of an artist, a filmmaker who is passionate about something that he/she ends up bringing it to life and stealing everyone's hearts. Dune is more like a corporate product covered by a great vision of a man. It's an empty beauty that I hope will be saved...
Chapelwaite (2021)
An excitement that requires a great deal of patience
The show resonates with a specific audience. You have to wait for the juice to pour at the end. I love how the story is directed, even though the vampire concept is not novel to people. I hope there is more to see.
