Failure to Obey (2015)
Thought provoking but flawed.
This documentary was technically sound. Fast paced but thorough, a high footage to narration ratio, etc. The subject was also thought provoking which allowed more immersion. Essentially the documentary was about a pastor with a clean record being brutalized by border patrol agents in a "constitution free zone" for exercising his rights under the constitution. The inevitable argument will be made by the unwashed masses that he should have just "made things easier" and forfeit his rights and just go along. This of course if left unchecked will ultimately result in a police state. If no one ever exercises their rights, their rights will eventually be taken away. Even the concept of a "constitution free zone" in America which applies to Americans should be extremely troubling. The argument will also be made that "If you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear". This is also extremely flawed. For instance would you allow a government camera in your bathroom to watch you shower and use the toilet? Why not? Surely you're not doing anything illegal in there. I agree explicitly with his stance against government over reach and in actuality (as proved in the subsequent trial) he was well within his rights to do so. With all that said, there is a fine line between being a privacy advocate and being a troublemaker. The first half of the film was the meat and bones of the documentary, which focused on footage of the incident, trial footage, news reports and the pastor giving his thoughts on it all. The points he wanted to make were all covered in detail. The second half of the documentary became insufferable with the pastor beating us over the head with religion while also being extremely smug and in my opinion looking for trouble as he filmed encounter after encounter with more checkpoints. To be fair these incidents gave more validity to his argument as it showed the checkpoint officers allowing him to just leave without answering questions but his attitude had changed. He seemed less about making a point and more about feeding his own ego while also promoting himself and his church. The second half seemed hellbent on undermining the credibility of the first half. If it weren't for that I'd have given this a 6 or 7 rating but because of it I gave it a 5 which may be a little generous. This is a very important issue but I'm not sure this documentary is the best representation of it.
Escaping Polygamy (2014)
Lousy "reality TV show" disguised as a documentary.
I wish I had come to this IMDb page and saw that the title was "Escaping Polygamy (2014) Reality-TV". Unfortunately I read reviews elsewhere and they all referred to this as a documentary and that's what I thought I was getting when I watched it. The fact that it was a "lifetime channel original" should have tipped me off but I gave it a chance.
I do enjoy learning about the subject matter of polygamist cults but truth be known I watch every documentary I can get my hands on. The thing that set this apart from most other polygamist documentaries is that this focused on the younger generation and the families and those who try to leave the cult.
The vast majority of polygamist documentaries focus on the upper tier members like warren jeffs who have billions of dollars and commit child rape, forcing families to do his will and having his "enforcers" physically attacking those in the cult that offer resistance.
Almost immediately I noticed that several scenes were obviously staged. One in particular had a guy asking quietly if he could talk to a girl. They talked about someone in need of rescue but they obviously wanted to keep it a secret for the time being but the camera was right up in their face the entire time.
The interviews all felt scripted as did every aspect of this reality TV show. It easily could have been "breaking Amish" or "jersey shore". It also came across as cheap in content and production but this is standard with lifetime original movies.
All in all I cannot recommend this to anyone. If you want to see a REAL documentary about the subject that goes into much more depth check out Sons of Perdition (2010).
In fact compared to Sons of Perdition, this show seems insulting to the very serious subject matter. I gave Sons of Perdition an 8/10 rating. I gave this film a 2/10. That's my feelings and you can decide for yourself if you want to see it, just be forewarned this is more "reality TV" than a documentary.
Death on Demand (2008)
Total and utter crap
I am second guessing myself over my "1" rating because I usually reserve 1 for extremely bad movies but I couldn't give this higher than a 1.5. The actors and actresses were all very unattractive which sucked because there was a lot of sexual situations. The actual acting was horrendous. You were always aware that it's just a movie. You never get lost into it like you do a great movie. The special FX were hit and miss but overall OK for a small budget picture. Not quite enough of it to earn the "strong violence/gore" moniker though. The ending was so predictable that it secured a "1" vote. Had the ending been good it would have gotten a "2". Another thing that bugged me was that the premise of the movie was this group of people stuck in a house (which may or may not be haunted) all the while being recorded and streamed on a website. The group had to solve certain clues so it was like a scavenger hunt. It made no sense because it was just a 2 story house. They acted like it was a huge compound. Another huge plot hole was the fact that every time some action happened it was never picked up on the web cam. If the whole premise of the project was to video these people, it seems like they would go to great lengths to ensure that there would be no "blind spots".
Hey don't take my word for it though. Pick up a copy and decide for yourself. Make sure to come back here and review it because it's pretty likely that as soon as I post this, we'll get a few positive ghost reviews by people that worked on it.
Sorry guys, I didn't mean to rag your movie but it wasn't any good.
The Great American Snuff Film (2004)
Stay away from this junk
I have submitted comments on this film a few times and they never get posted. Here's the deal, I belong to a horror yahoo group and the director/producer joined and constantly harassed us about this movie. I argued that there is no way this was based on a real serial killer (never heard of him before or after....do a look for William Allen Grone on your fav search engine) and there is NO real snuff footage on it. The idiot claimed it was all real and that the last few minutes were the actual (ie real) snuff film in it's entirety. I got the flick, fast forwarded through the extremely bad acting and low budget special effects and went to the "real" snuff footage. It was so fake and cheesy looking that I can't stress it enough. Then after it's over and the credits run it says "This film is and all characters in it are a work of fiction". Stay away from this one it's junk.
Aftermath (1994)
Extremely disturbing. The reviews don't lie
A lot of times when ppl post reviews they may or may not be based on facts, just opinions which everyone is entitled too but when ppl say this movie is disturbing and sick, it's no opinion. It's been quite sometime since I have seen something so vile. The only things that come close to it are the shockumentories like "Traces of death" (if all you have seen in the realm of shockumentories are the "Faces of death" series, you have no idea what I am talking about.). The only way and I mean ONLY way this movie could be anymore disturbing is if it were true. With all that being said, I highly recommend it as long as you are mature enough to handle it. It is a very well done piece of art and holds nothing back.
