Animal (2023)
Misogyny aside, it fails on every movie metric
Enough has been said about the patriarchy and misogyny this movie propagates. But looking at it purely through a cinematic lens, it's still one of the most unwatchable movies I've seen. Took me 5 sitting to finish it and that doesn't have to do with length (movies like Swades or Jodhaa Akbar will grip you even though they don't have ridiculous action sequences).
They spent crores on stupid action sequences (you have guns and 20 men but will take on 50 villains single-handedly with an axe and they will all queue up to come hit you as if they're not hitmen but have come for dandiya during navratri), but no money on the script. The story has gaping holes, red herrings, annoying slow sequences and entries that if edited out could easily cut down the runtime by an hour, and logicless acts (farmers you haven't met in your life will leave everything and become killers just because you are family. Wow!). The dialogues are cringeworthy with underwear and cock jokes that even a 5-year-old wouldn't find funny.
How is this grossing hundreds of crores?! The problem isn't the director, who thinks everything he touches is gold, but the audience that laps up this garbage (I saw it on Netflix and wouldn't spend even a rupee to go see it in the cinema).
There's so much more you could do with 3.5 hours of your life. If you can't think of anything, stare at a wall; even that would feel nicer.
Nayika Devi: The Warrior Queen (2022)
Poor execution of a potential blockbuster
Most reviews seem to be unable to differentiate between historical character and film. Just because one likes a certain character, dynasty, empire, or period of history does not automatically make any film on it marvellous.
While the film is a good attempt, it fails in several aspects.
1. Acting - While some of the characters acted well, the lead definitely needs a much wider range of emotions - she had just two expressions - an angry stern ruler and a shouting screaming warrior. In war, no one is constantly shouting without reason and there's many different ways to depict anger and aggression.
2. Fight choreography - Indian films seem to have an obsession with unnecessary slow-mo shots, unrealistic heroics (one person taking on 10 and still winning), flying through the air, ... The fights seems extremely fake and were almost unwatchable.
3. Inconsistencies and inaccuracies -
a. If the Ghoris spoke in Hindi, shouldn't other kingdoms such as the Marathas and those from Kashi also talk in Hindi?
B. The 'gh' in Ghori is pronounced as 'gh' in ghum or gharib and not as that in 'ghamand'. At least the Muslim characters would be able to pronounce their own name correctly?
C. The lead couldn't correctly pronounce the 'n' in Patan or 'aapne', instead saying 'aapde', basics that should've been corrected.
D. Unnecessary vilification - Another trend in Indian films, from Padmavat to Tanhaji and Panipat is the overvillificaion of Muslim characters. No, they don't wear fur coats in the Indian heat, they don't dress only in black, they're not savages who eat like animals, they're not sex fiends. It just takes away from history!
While the film had potential, it failed for me in several departments. Some of the songs were nice. It was an overall decent attempt, but so much could have been done better.
RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) (2022)
Wish that IMDB would allow 0 for a film
This movie is absolute garbage - horrible senseless story, unnecessary drama, mediocre acting, and logicless action, not to mention rife with historical inaccuracies. How is this even making so much money?! :$
Pakeezah (1972)
How is this a classic?!
I watched the film expecting stellar performances, dialogues, and story, something on the lines if Mughal-e-Azam, but was disappointed on all fronts.
The songs while great, is no reason to rate a film as a masterpiece. The acting is very average and restrained, dialogues mediocre, and the story has absolute no sense or logic. And don't even get me started on the direction. The same scene switches between day and night so frequently, even someone with no knowledge of film would laugh at the idiocy. 🙄
Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)
Terrible overrated film!
This film was awful! The story was complete nonsense. Like most Bollywood films, the film had no logic, but this one has absolutely nothing in it! Rich people making up problems where there exist none and problems so fake and unrealistic, they can only happen in Bollywood. The acting over the top, dialogues and jokes were pathetic and that dog, why?! You know awards are bought in the industry when Anil Kapoor wins a Filmfare for his performance in this film. That's 3 hours of my life I'm never getting back.
