Free Guy (2021)
Channing Tatum, Lightsabers, and Mariah Carey, you can't go wrong with this movie
Take the "Ready Player One" movie engine, with the serious dialled down, and the humour dialled up.
Throw The Truman Show, Wreck-It Ralph, Groundhog Day, and The Matrix all in that mixer, with a little bit of Sleepless in Seattle thrown in at the end.
That's Free Guy.
There is also has Channing Tatum (humourous) cameos, Lightsabres, and a Mariah Carey theme song.
It is a FANTASTIC - you can't go wrong with this movie.
Well actually there is one thing wrong with it... Free Guy's best buddy should have been played by Kevin Hart but you can't have everything.
Phörpa (1999)
Only watch the trailer... because it is a better production than the movie!
A slow, bland, and story-less movie. It does however give a very good insight of living through the eyes of an exiled Tibetan monk. This is the movie's only saving grace, and the reason it gets 3 stars instead of 1 (or zero if possible!).
And even with the view from a monks perspective, the same experience could have been achieved with a 10 minute short film instead of a 90 minute feature!
It also seems they used real monks as actors because they are very bad thespians, even from behind the leveling shield of English subtitles!
The trailer for this movie is unique... I have seen trailers before that contain every single good part of a movie, they promise a lot, and the film turns out to be a disappointment. But in this case there are NO good parts in the movie! The trailer stitches a whole lot of boring scenes together in such a way as to make a mini-movie that is actually a lot better than the movie itself! It is quite an amazing accomplishment, and perhaps worth getting this movie out on DVD just to compare the trailer to the movie!
I saw this movie on the shelf at the local rental store one night, and read the synopsis on the back cover which sounded OK. Then I vaguely remembered seeing the trailer at some stage in the past and thinking it looked like a decent movie. So I thought "why not" and rented it... I should have thought "why" and NOT rented it!
Watched it on April Fools Day, which was appropriate in hindsight!
Hart's War (2002)
"Hogan's Heroes" minus the comedy.
This is not a realistic or believable movie at all. I could almost reference every character in this movie with a corresponding character in the TV series "Hogan's Heroes" I was half expecting one of the German POW camp guards to yell "I SEE NOTHING"!!
The only difference between this movie and "Hogan's Heroes" is that this movie tries to show all the secret goings-on under the noses of the POW guards as being believable! This was of course the main device used by the TV series to get laughs back in the 1960's, and this movie shows that this type of story line is still able to get laughs... well, from me anyway!
If you are a fan of old school war movies and detective style murder mysteries then you might get more out of this movie than I did, but even if you are, it will be hard work for you!
Bad ma ra khahad bord (1999)
Not really a movie... more of an experience.
hmmmmm... not too sure about this movie. I can't decide if I loved it or hated it!
I watched the entire thing enthusiastically, which means it must not have been boring, although nothing much was happening! I guess I was expecting everything to fall into place at the end, but the ending was one of the most unexpected and uneventful of any movie I have ever seen. So immediately after the movie finished I felt quite let down, ripped off, and angry. I would have given the film a 0/10 at that point.
But on reflection it was quite an artistic movie and it was a realistic glimpse into another world, that would be very difficult to experience in any other way. There was a sereneness and humanity about the film which I perhaps lost sight of while I was watching the movie, due to my expectations of a Hollywood style plot. So in this way the movie could have got a 10/10 from me.
In the end I think I'll settle on giving it 5/10 and call it an experience rather than a movie!
2:37 (2006)
Hard to watch in places... but that makes it a very watchable movie!
There is some very heavy subject matter in this movie but I think it is used to make a broad statement that will be useful and relevant to a wide audience. That statement being that emotions and human behavior are not always what you expect they will be.
It was pretty hard to watch at times because of the "in your face" nature of some scenes such as incest, masturbation, suicide, gay kissing, bullying, etc but if you are in a "serious movie" mood then it is well worth a watch.
Some of the acting wasn't quite perfect but you will always get that with the young actors required for college based movies, and all in all the acting was of a decent standard.
I think the final scene needn't have been so long and so graphic but that is only a small gripe, and people less marshmallow than myself may not agree!
The style and content of the movie reminded me a lot of the 2003 film 'Elephant'.
