Tau (2018)

Very Bad Episode of Black Mirror
18 July 2018
I was really on the fence looking at the reviews on here as well as Netflix. Started out great, suspense is there, you are really invested in the protagonist. The sci-fi is interesting. Then I check to find out Gary Oldman plays the voice of Tau! Cool! I'm gonna settle in and really enjoy this. Gary Oldman wouldn't be attached to garbage. Getting a really good vibe like this is a movie length episode of Black Mirror. Then, about the halfway mark, the movie just went off the rails. Sooooooo bad. By the end, it was inching to "so bad it's good" territory.

Bottom line, if you are super bored and desperate to watch something, give it a try but don't expect much. It had some really enjoyable qualities but overall it was roll your eyes laughably bad in the second half.

Excellent Sci-Fi
7 July 2018
I was really on the fence with this one given the method it was released. The studio clearly didn't have faith in it. The reviews are very mixed and that kept me away from it. A friend whose taste I respect told me it was good so I gave it a shot.

The acting, production value, and writing are excellent. Sure there are some plot holes and our protagonists make stupid decisions but don't we all?

I loved the mystery and suspense and it kept me glued to the screen. This is good sci-fi.

Dragon Blade (2015)
7/10
Awesomely Bad
4 September 2015
Read a review claiming Dragon Blade achieved "so bad it's good" status. Wow, did it ever! Imagine if Sharknado (the dethroned champion of "so bad it's good) had a $65 million budget.

This movie had a lot of good going for it. Jackie Chan is an amazing action star, made famous by his "stunt fighting" which he excels at in this movie. The production value was really top notch - sets, costumes, cinematography, special effects, all of it was quite impressive.

Where this movie fails on every level is the writing and the acting. I could go into great detail but I think the best comparison is the cheesy, campy entertainment that is the SyFy original movie.

Adrien Brody and John Cusack must have signed onto this movie like all the A-list celebrities back in the 80s making Japanese commercials for a quick buck, certain that no one in America would ever see them.
