The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
just a bunch of beautiful men running around for 2 hours
-Don't get what was going on or what happened. Couldn't recall exactly where it left off and it didn't give me any reminders. I assume they were just walking, since that's what they always do.
-Don't get why that had to be over two hours long.
-The quality reminded me of a made for TV British movie.
-The scenes in the sunlight looked strange, parts were over-exposed, sometimes the grass and other times the sky. It lacked quality, colour, contrast... just didn't look right.
-The fast movements were a little Blair Witchy at times- made me dizzy.
-So cheesy that it was actually funny at times during death scenes that were supposed to be sad.
-Just not very good.
-Basically to me it was just a bunch of beautiful men with great hair running around for two hours. At least it had that. And to that I give it two stars. #TeamBard
Boyhood (2014)
About life and what it is and what it could be
This film was amazing on many levels. And it's the levels in films that I really enjoy. There is watching and enjoying it on a surface level, but there's a deeper level below that surface through which I enjoyed this film. The realistic acting and scenes and the way they were strung together was like being a fly on the wall in someone else's life. But somehow it wasn't just about them, it was about you as well. It was about all of us and how this experience of life and the struggle between what we thought it would be like and what it really is is something we all share. But what made this film so beautifully brilliant was that it touched on what life could potentially be. Mason was a rare type of person who had the potential to become a self actualized person, and become everything he could possibly be and experience life on a deeper level than his mother or most other people. I think his father was the one who inspired this side of him, his creativity and his potential. Mason could see the beauty in moments, which he captured through photography. He also showed independent thinking at a young age and complained of the pressures he felt from society to conform or follow a certain set of steps. Which is what his mother ended up disappointed in. The ending of the film was perfect in my opinion because it gave a preview into what Mason's future would be like. On his first day of college he meets people who are into finding something more from life, into experiences. The end of the film shows Mason having a very deep experience and I think his future will be full of these moments. And there is nothing less I would wish for anyone. I know he is just a movie character but like I said, it made people think about their own lives and I hope it inspires people to find these unique experiences in life and really get the most out of the human experience rather than ending up crying someday wishing for more. There is more. You just have to find it. I cannot give this movie a rating lower than 10 because it was brilliant and beautiful on so many levels and spoke on behalf of the human experience more than any other film ever has.
Phoebe in Wonderland (2008)
Only the "awful normals" would give this film a low rating.
You can't expect the majority of people to understand the beauty of a film like this, which is why the low ratings do not surprise me at all. Most people simply fall in the "awful normals" category and don't get the film. For the rest of us though, it was wonderful. It's nice to see some people know how to keep the magic alive and express such a unique and seemingly rare aspect of the human experience through a film such as this. There are certain movies that will stick with you over your life. That you will remember in certain rare moments and which will inspire you to see the magic in every day dullness. Somehow this film will become a part of who you are and who you will become. Most people think it's just a movie. They're the ones who rate it low. Do not let that stir you away from this movie, they know not of their simple minds!
Her (2013)
It went beyond simply being a movie. It came alive.
We arrived a little later than we planned to the movie theatre and were upset when we walked in to find that the only available seats were in the front row. We awkwardly looked up at the screen during the last of the previews. I wasn't in the mood to feel upset about these unfortunate seats, so I decided to enjoy it. In the end it was because of this that the entire movie touched me even more and ended up feeling like an epic personal experience. I didn't see the back of anyone's heads or anyone getting up to use the washroom, or any other distraction to remind me I was in a movie theatre. It was just me and the screen. Me and the complex characters and their beautiful world: their eye lashes, their pores, their emotions, the tiny perceptual moments they experienced: dust floating in the sunlight, water droplets in the shower; these tiny beautiful moments which make up our lives. It was good from the beginning but each moment kept getting surprisingly deeper and deeper. I don't even know if I can put into words how I feel about this movie. It was amazingly brilliant, beautiful, intense, and meaningful. It's truly a masterpiece. The depth of life expressed in this film almost felt TOO INTENSE in certain moments, yet it's exactly how I feel sometimes. This film was an expression of the feeling of being overflowing with joy, of being deeply, overwhelmingly alive. They perfectly captured this particular way of seeing the world through the music, the style of filming, the script, the lighting, and the camera angles. The characters in this movie are actually versions of ourselves. I saw my own thoughts and ideas manifested on screen by someone else and to take it all back in again filled me with that overwhelming intense alive/joy feeling. It was about love, life, perception, reality and beyond. As the film went on and more thoughts and more questions were expressed not only did the characters evolve and grow but so did those in the audience. We all grew as spiritual beings, intellectual beings, beautiful beings. Samantha evolved so much that she surpassed our physical material world. Alan Watts was incorporated for a reason. If you don't know who he is you must look him up and read his teachings: expand your mind. Expand your world. I feel so excited about all of this. More and more people are "waking up" and honestly this film is about just that: coming alive! And loving love, loving life! This was the most amazing film I have ever seen and it went where I have never seen or felt a film go before- beyond simply being just a movie. It came alive. It was honestly THAT epic. Successful in each and every way, beautiful in every aspect, this is the film of the year and if not of all time (Too intense? Maybe... BUT I FEEL IT. DON'T YOU? If not, watch this film!).
Unmanned: America's Drone Wars (2013)
Brilliant
As the result of a synchronicity I found out about this film just as I was interested in finding out more about this topic. It was eye-opening, life-changing, truthful, honest, shocking and most importantly, inspired me to spread the awareness about this issue to others. The stories of innocent people who were affected by these drones were amazing to hear and really had an effect. Documentaries like this one are great and really do make a difference. I think the only problem is that it's always a certain kind of people who watch them in the first place. Those people who watch them are the type who would care anyway. Somehow we need to find out a way to get to those who don't.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
My boyfriend makes me watch these movies.
My boyfriend has made me watch all of the Lord of The Rings movies, the past Hobbit and tonight we saw this one. All of them are confused in my mind and I can't recall what happened when and what was supposed to be before or after, it's all out of order, but most of the time it's just people walking far distances and overcoming obstacles so it's almost irrelevant anyway. The filming, editing, characters, music and effects about these movies are amazing it's just that the story line for me is not the most captivating which I know is an unpopular opinion so I won't bother factoring that into my rating. One thing that confuses me is why Orlando Bloom's eyes keep changing colour. I actually thought he was supposed to be an evil cousin from his other character who had brown eyes because Gandolf said something about beware of the elves who are less intelligent than their relatives and then Orlando Bloom was living in this other town suddenly and seemed to be jealous and less like the beautiful magical being I had remembered him as. My boyfriend was confused as to what evil cousin I was talking about after the movie so I guess I had that all wrong the entire time. The creators of this movie are amazingly good at creating these lands, villages and kingdoms that I wish really existed so I could go and live there forever. This film introduced some good characters such as the barge guy who helped them and Stephen Fry's cute little assistant guy. I can never remember their names. The dragon was also likable for being an unlikeable character. Love when that happens. However, I was sad that the best character of all didn't make a single appearance in this movie: Gollum. I love him, he's adorable and he makes it all worthwhile. But that's okay, I still paid attention the whole time. I give it an 8 out of 10 because the creators of it are crazy good at creating worlds, characters and excellent movies that many people love. I take away 1 point for the eye confusion and another for the lack of Gollum. It's not my favourite type of film but it takes a lot of time, talent and creative genius to put things like this together. Great work.
A Dangerous Method (2011)
The knowledge gained was interesting, the method of gaining it (this film) not so much.
Although I really wanted to see this film and did find certain things I hadn't know before to be interesting, I would never recommend this movie to anyone. It was quite boring. It's always distracting when a movie takes place in another country and the actors are speaking English, especially in the wrong accents. It's not possible to make this type of film too exciting, I get that, but I think they could have done a little better. I was watching with someone else and felt guilty the whole time for making them sit through the film. However, it's educational if you study psychology or have an interest in it. It seems even the psychologists have problems but despite all that, Jung still had some very interesting ideas. I want to know more about his ideas and see further studies in the field of parapsychology. It's so interesting!
Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Greys Anatomy is a form of art
Greys Anatomy is a beautiful work of art. An art created through characters the audience comes to love in a world that could almost be ours but isn't. Their lives are filled with passion and they are deeply alive at every moment. There is passion and depth in their work, their relationships, their friendships, their world. These beautiful, complex characters and the relationships between them through the depths of various situations are an inspiration to everyone who watches. Every episode is another touching dramatization about what it means to be alive. Each episode touches a place inside you, unique to humans and the tears you cry are a reminder of just how beautiful it is to feel because happy or sad, to feel anything at all is to feel alive.
Closed Circuit (2013)
Intense, suspenseful but most importantly of all, it leaves you thinking.
After seeing this film you'll find even the low ratings it's received on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes to be strangely suspicious. It just leaves you questioning all of the things you really need to be question right now, especially with the current trial of the recent Boston Bombings. The whole movie actually holds an eerie resemblance to the whole case and does put certain ideas out there. Which is exactly where they need to be. Out here, with us, in the public. But in the end it's JUST movie, right? I see it as more of a message. It was brilliant and exactly what the world needs right now. Not only was the message perfect, but the movie was suspenseful and intense and so far the reviews don't seem to match up to the movie I saw... What's going on here, did we actually see the same movie!? I guess perception is what determines that one.
Man of Steel (2013)
Half the movie was just buildings blowing up
They burned too quickly through the first half of the movie which actually had potential to be interesting. The scenes were scattered and cut certain interesting aspects about his life too short. It would have been interesting to see what happened when he landed on Earth and see more of the story about his life growing up. There were some nice scenes in the beginning where the style of filming really captured the atmosphere of the various places he was in- the clothes on the clothesline, raindrops in a bucket, hitchhiking on a mountain road. But those nice scenes that were seen in the trailer kind of gave me a false impression and ended up being very little of the actual movie. I had seen trailers and interviews about how they were trying to make this movie more "real" and that it was meant to have a very human aspect which should have been more about his life experience on Earth and his loneliness and the way he felt about being so different and not knowing where he came from, but you could tell that what the makers of this film really wanted was just to hurry up and get to the action. I expected a certain amount of impressive action scenes, but expected it to then go back to an interesting storyline. Instead, they basically dragged out the destruction of buildings through the rest of the movie with a few scenes of dialogue here and there. I think it had potential to be more of an interesting science fiction story with a human touch but I guess the people who love to see buildings blow up will not be disappointed.
This Is the End (2013)
This movie is a work of comedic art and that, my friends, is truly beautiful
This movie is hilarious. You can tell that Seth Rogan has a natural talent and is genuinely funny. They all are. After watching this I can appreciate comedy as art. It's brilliant in it's own strange and funny way. If you are easily insulted, don't watch the movie. Really it's that simple, because it pretty much makes fun of everything. I know some people can't take it. And it really is unfortunate for those people because they are seriously missing out on being able to enjoy this masterpiece of a comedy. Oh well, live and let live! Every moment of this film just gets crazier than the next and you don't even have time to stop and realize you're at the movies or let your mind wander to if you fed your cat yet today or not because you are just so caught up in the insanity happening in this movie!
