Ku bei (2021)
A post-COVID zombie apocalypse movie with a satirical streak
The Sadness (Taiwan 2021) opens with a warning about "graphic content and extreme violence/gore", which is entirely merited.
So let's deal with the blood-soaked elephant in the room. There are plenty of scenes of murder, torture and cruelty in this movie; occasionally transgressive, always shocking and eventually overblown to the point where they become comical, but never gratuitous. Equally, there are character moments, some of them quite touching, and plenty of dark misanthropic humour. When you mix these together in the right proportions, it's seriously impressive. It's a little like Romero's The Crazies, only dialled up to eleventy-stupid.
Would I recommend it? Certainly, but be prepared for a bumpy ride 😆
Kolskaya sverhglubokaya (2020)
A muddied and confusing mess
This cheap-looking Russian monster flick is a muddied and confusing mess. The premise is stupid, the plotting and characterisation are infantile and the effects are risible. You can almost certainly find a better use for your time.
Relic (2020)
Extraordinary
Claustrophobic, genuinely unsettling and emotionally devastating. This is an extraordinary movie.
Shashin no onna (2020)
Hypnotic, surreal and humane
It's a difficult movie to categorise; part fable, part romance and part body-horror. The performances are understated and nuanced and the story is compelling.
For the Sake of Vicious (2020)
Compelling and gory
"For the Sake of Vicious" is like Blue Ruin dialled up to eleventy-stupid; tense, compelling and gory.
Benny Loves You (2019)
Utterly delightful
"Benny Loves You" is that rarest of cinematic creations, a note-perfect horror comedy. Utterly delightful!
