A rich looking portrait of Family Secrets and Tragedy; but it is as flawed as the family itself.
28 March 2007
Bollywood has been churning up some impressive films recently, and improving the quality of their films. But they have yet to learn to master the art of film-making.Their films are not yet perfect or great; they still have a long way to go.But after having seen this film,I'm glad to say that they are getting close.Bollywood has the potential to make great movies and they are trying and improving and almost getting there. But they still fall short of spectacular results.

I would say EKLAVYA is by far the best of the very, very rare number of good films that Bollywood has made throughout their existence. Why,because it's more focused and well made than any of their minute number of good films. It's got rich atmosphere, intriguing setup, brilliant visuals, impressive sets, costumes and a different vision. But,overall,it is still a flawed epic.

The story revolves around a family, that is hiding secrets that once revealed, might have deadly consequences upon them.It is inspired by some of Shakespeare's works and it echoes throughout the film. It's about one aging guard(Bachchan),named Eklavya; who has served for the family all his life. Many generations of his family has served before him and he must continue to do so,carry on their legacy. The family of the Kindom of Devigarh itself has mysteries that keeps echoing throughout the film.Eklavya has sworn to protect the family no matter what.He also protects some of the secrets that can never be spread throughout the Kindom.Until, one night, the Queen of the Kindom dies, besides her is her mourning husband. This starts the doubts and accusations within the family. The Queen's Son,Prince Harshwardhan(Khan) arrives to take responsibility of the family. But there are other things going on in the palace.Slowly, one mystery after another pops up and secrets are revealed, and as the story progresses we see more and more people dying because of the secrets.Putting Eklavya into a painful position and come to terms with the happenings and the truths about this family's dark history.

EKLAVYA is an intriguing period piece. It blends ancient settings with modern lifestyle.Giving the film a unique look. The film functions like a thriller, but focusing more on melodrama and characters, that aren't well written. And it's a well made drama that borderlines on melodrama. But the film has flaws, especially in the second half and by the time it ends,it feels incomplete. It's a relatively short film by Bollywood standards and I was more than surprised. Not only did it manage to tell an engrossing story but also wrapped it up with style with its short length. And the best thing is that it's devoid of songs, only one song throughout the film. But,I guess, because the story is wrapped around an epic setting,it needed a longer running time to develop the plot and characters more. Some of the characters were weak and not well written, some of their back stories are never told and leaves a lot to be desired.

First half or so into the movie, you are hooked and quite entertained, but after the interval, the film slowly drags, since the plot becomes weak and it's going in one direction; so there isn't much to tell.Subplots are added to compensate the running time.In other words,it could've trimmed a little more of the length and finished it quickly. That would've made the film perfect. But it gets boring as it drags the story and adds subplot and makes the whole of second half contrived. But the third act, which is the big revelation of who is behind the whole scenario, somewhat pays off with satisfaction.

Praise the Director who manages to keep the story afloat, which could've been worse. The whole movie could've been worse if it were handled by someone else. But the Director impresses you with his visual presentation of the story and keep you entertained. His script might be flawed but he succeeds in good storytelling, which is rare in Bollywood. But what he should be thanking most is the film's Cinematography, which elevates the material and gives a bold and rich look to the film. And some impressive set design and costumes, with able score.

However, what really keeps this film afloat is the acting. Each and every actor deserves equal recognition. They all have a part to play and they all help in move the story forward. You can't just give out all the praises to Bachchan alone. He was terrific, but the other actors allowed him to emote the character well. But,of course,Mr.Bachchan's performance is the strength of the film. His silence and his eyes says more than his words.I've never liked this actor and thought he was yet another over-hyped Bollywood actor, like any other. But after watching him in this,I understand why people worship him.But I still thought he could've done a little better.Saif Ali Khan was quite competent and gives a good supporting performance, but his character doesn't allows him to do much. This guy has the looks and moves of a good actor.Sanjay Dutt was just great in his small part.Booman Irani's character was flawed as well, and his acting sometimes goes from over the top to annoying. But if that's what his character was supposed to be,than he succeeds. He manages to make his character dark enough to be impressed.Jackie Shroff , Jimmy Shergil as well as the beautiful Vidya Balan have little to do and wouldn't really comment on them.

On the whole, this is an ambitious piece of work that could've been better. But for what it is,it's a fine example that Bollywood is capable of making good movies, only if they try.And I hope they keep making films like these.I would like to see more of it in the future. This, with films like Black Friday, proves that Bollywood is learning, and improving but they have yet to learn a lot to be able to compete at a world class level. However,Indian audiences opt for mindless junks or poorly made films like Dhoom 2 or Guru than appreciating films like this one.Reducing the chances of making films like Eklavya .I wouldn't recommend this film to be sent as an entry to the Oscars,Black Friday deserves that position. But it wouldn't hurt if they send it.This film goes to my list of only a handful of Bollywood films that I've enjoyed.

Happy Feet (2006)
8/10
A delightful,happy-go-lucky Animated feature that is wonderful to watch with a message attached with it.Amongst the best Animated films ever.
21 March 2007
Happy Feet is a delightful,happy-go-lucky film that leaves you feeling happy and wanting to tap dance. It's a well conceived animated film with an ecological, environmental message for kids.Yes,it has themes that may not be suitable for kids, but it's also there for the mature audience to enjoy and think about it.It's a thinking person's animated film.

As you know,it's about Penguins, and their empire.Mumble,a young penguin who can't sing has developed a very odd skill among his beings, who have a heart for singing. He tap dances, and he's a genius at that. But the Penguin community survive on their singing. As everyone else like him can do it and master it,Mumble feels isolated. He decides to leave and explore the world. He stumbles upon some new penguins who find him really cool. They get along well and all. Then Mumble meets Lovelace ,who has encountered the so called "Aliens"(that is ,the humans),and Mumble wants to find out who has been stealing their fishes, which has made it hard to survive for the Penguins. He embarks on a journey to face the Aliens and request for fishes. But as he enters the world of humans,it becomes clear that destruction has already gone underway.Humans are taking away all the fishes and destroying the Antartic by polluting the seas and all that.Mumble's world is plagued by these events and he tries to confront them in the end and prove himself worth to his kind.

The story takes many turns and sets it different from other animated features. It's unique in its animation and execution.George Miller tries to present a realistic film than the usually cartoonish animated flicks. He sets serious topics in the plot and allows both the young and mature audience think and start a debate about our actions and all. It's a smart move. But on the way,he kind of looses his message and mixes things up,it also becomes a mess. But Miller keeps thing afloat with the cute little penguins and the gleeful environment he creates.Adding musical numbers and dances to keep the kids entertained and love the film, while the grown up enjoy it along with thinking about what the film is trying to say.It sets new grounds, and for that, this film and its creators deserve all the praise and the award it got.

But beware, some elements of the film may prompt your kid to question in the wrong way.The sexual references and some frightening scenes involving very cute, loving penguins may disturb the parents. But,I guess it was necessary.

The CGI was breathtaking. The visuals and look of the film was flawless. It just keeps you bewildered for its technical genius. It's a pitch perfect animated feature. It ranks amongst the best Animated features ever made, topping Toy Story,Shrek and what not, except Incredibles. For me Incredibles and this film remain the favorite.

But,you should watch this film for its different approach and clever execution. It's adorable and also somewhat thought provoking. And it leaves you with a smile. So,I would say it's classic animation.A technical and animated breakthrough,in a groundbreaking sense.

Ingenious! From the makers of "Shaun of the Dead" give you another classic, original piece of cinematic breakthrough.
21 March 2007
Original,Hilarious, full of action, this is as hot as it gets. The smartly written script and witty characters make this a must see for action comedy fans.It breaks new grounds and reinvents the genre by giving us a whole new bunch of excitement over it.It's rated R and that makes it even better.Watch it and you'll feel rewarded after Hollywood's failure to come up with anything original in this genre. The continuous flow of crappy entertainments and very little, and rare originality coming only from Art-house flicks and sometimes Blockbuster films.I loved this flick.

A-, 8.5/10, ****/5....I'll write the full review later.

Metropolis (2001)

Well made and a bit flawed.
19 March 2007
This is a really well made animated film reminiscent of the themes tackled in Metropolis/Blade Runner. It's a complex animated feature aimed at a matured audience. It's got some thoughtful scenes and some really well done animation. It has a really interesting storyline with little developed characters and is surprisingly succeeds in allowing us to care for the characters. The animation and the production designing of the dystopian future was brilliant. Some great moments are present in the film but it's not for children under 5.It's got some violence and language and implied nudity. It aims for the younger mature audience and allows them to think about the themes it tackles.

It's really worth watching.

Aankhen (2002)

Could've been a great film if it went to the hands of Hollywood filmmakers.
18 March 2007
This is the first time bollywood has taken an interesting concept and taken a step further in film-making .Which is also copied from a film that was made in the south of India.A very impressive ,interesting concept and story, gripping and intriguing. It could've been a great Hollywood thriller.Unfortunately it went into the hands of Bollywood filmmakers which means loads of songs ,massive flaws/plot holes and lame execution makes this could've-been highly successful film into a dumb thriller. What a film it could've been. Why did they ruin it ,that is the biggest regret to have watched this film, instead of watching a Hollywood remake.Aankhen (EYES) could've been a great film ,I hate the Bollywood filmmakers for wasting such a good premise.I gave it a 4 only for its concept.I wish they was someone in Hollywood who could make this flick.I don't understand why indians appreciate cheap cinema so much, like this one.

Blood Diamond (2006)
7/10
A message film trying to reach a wider audience through the conventional Hollywood formula.
15 March 2007
It's rare to find films like these in Hollywood nowadays. But they are still plagued by the Hollywood formula. So is the case with Blood diamond.A thoughtful and stunning action drama with a message to send out that gets bogged down by the Hollywood fatigue.

Blood Diamond could've been a great film, but that was never gonna happen. The film for the most part was solid. It kicks off well and holds on until its second half becomes your typical Hollywood drama with a Hollywood ending. But nevertheless,it gets its message across in a really effective way.And that's only because of director Edward Zwicks sincere effort.Probably his best film since the LAST SAMURAI.He carefully balances the film's message and action and big budget adventure and still capture the shocking accounts of brute in Sierra Leone.Where kids are given guns to roam free and kill whoever they wish to,where laws are broken and country is torn apart by civil war.

Danny Archer(Di Caprio) is a diamond smuggler who owes his boss and gets around to places quickly. He doesn't have a permanent home or location and he's really hard to trust or predict. But as he gets arrested for illegal smuggling he comes across another prisoner who is arrested for the wrong cause.Solomon Vandy (Djimon Honsou) is caught by the rebels while trying to help his family escape. He is forced to dig diamonds from the ground until Vandy finds the blood diamond, which he hides and keeps safe.As he is captured by the government he is pursued by Archer, who will help him find his family and get back his son from the rebels; only if he gets him his blood diamond.Along the way Archer meets an optimistic journalists (Jennifer Connelly) who is more interested in getting the information of how illegal diamond smuggling works than getting her share of the price. And only Archer can give her that information. The three embark on a deadly adventure through the torn Sierra Leone, where gunfire and killings are a routine and can come out of anywhere. But there are secrets Archer is hiding and he is desperate to have that diamond in his possession before others capture them.

Sounds like your typical,old-fashioned action-adventure.But think again, this ones got a message and it's executed with unconventional sense until we reach its final third half. It's done with excitement and enough action to lure the average moviegoer into the theatres.Because that's the only way to get the message and horrifying events to its audiences to realize what their diamonds cost.

But it also feels clichéd and old-fashioned in parts. The screenplay should've been way better and there was potential in it.But the writer opts for the usual Hollywood flairs. That is not to say that the script doesn't have strengths. It does have some really well written parts with strong lead characters. And it tells a very honest story. But it could've worked a little more.

It's the Director that keeps everything afloat and Zwick is best at these kinds of films. He is not afraid to show us what Sierra Leone was really like a few years back. How it tore itself apart due to the civil war.And how the world didn't gave a damn about it even if they said they do.The world is just there for the benefit. The governments promise help and they just never provide any.Either they are limited or they don't get what they want. It's the political side of it that destroys and promotes the kinds of things that went on in Sierra Leone and that is true even now in other parts of the world, like IRAQ.

What would an average moviegoer say about films like these? He'll think about it a lot and try to think of a way to help, but the next day he'll forget about it and pretend he never even saw anything like this. And that's what has been happening. We make films like these to open everyone's eyes and once they've had their eyes wide open they close them and move about their business. So,what's the point of making these kinds of films.

The main strength of this film is that it is a message movie packed into a commercial film.So that it could reach a wider audience. And for that it's recommended.Another reason is the characters and the events they go through, which are executed skillfully by a veteran like Ed Zwick.

Di Caprio has been making some really great films the past few years.Post-Beach,he's been making some really memorable and striking pictures and working with the best in Hollywood. And each time his performances get better and better. As Danny Archer,Di Caprio infests unpredictability in an otherwise predictable anti-hero.He makes us hard to predict Danny's moves. You are not sure whether you should trust him or not, even till the final few moments of his time in the film. But he makes Danny more human and sympathetic. And he nails it once again with his biting performance. It's unlike any character he's ever played and he's a totally different kind of Di Caprio here. But,I still loved his portrayal of Howard Hughes more than this. And every time he is beaten by a greater performance at the year end awards.Ironically, they were African-Americans,who beat him twice. And they both deserved it.Maybe, next time Di Caprio might finally win.And Djimon Honsou's fierce performance as a father in search of his son is so believable that you know he will do anything to get back his family.Jennifer Connelly doesn't have much to do.Well, her character won't allow her to ,except making the usual speeches and bashing. But Connelly looks stunning.

The film is packed with brilliant editing, exceptionally well staged, exciting action set pieces and good cinematography, with able score. It's a well made film only hampered by its weak screenplay. It's filled with a stunning production values and entertains fully. But it certainly could've been a great film and it had the potentials to be.It's only strong performances and able direction that propels and prevents this film from becoming your usual Hollywood action-adventure.It is worth checking out and will seriously hit you with its message about the cost of those bloody diamonds.

A rare kind of War movie that has its share of flaws.
15 March 2007
Flags of Our Fathers is a complex, sophisticated and intriguing look at the definition of HERO.It's also a riveting character study of three men who are falsely declared heroes and can't come to terms with their fame as their guilt won't let them.

It's a story that begins with the shot of the famous picture taken on the mountains of Iwo Jima.Three men who raised the flags along with others are considered to be heroes,as they're mistaken for the men who actually raised the flags with them. They raised a second flag after the first one, which was the actual flag. But the shot was taken when a second flag was raised, which was more of a replacement. As that captures the three men in the shot, they survive the battle, later brought home and declared heroes while the media heavily promote just the three of them,to make everyone believe so.But two of them cannot face the exploitation and the burden of being a Hero, since they can't take the credit alone. They don't think of themselves as Heroes because they are told to be so.It's the media and promotion that propels these soldiers to fame and falsely taking them to the top.The story is told with events shifting back and forth.Focusing both the events on the mainland and the events on the battlefield, which is recalled by the two soldiers as flashbacks. As they take a tour around the country for their appearance in the most famous photograph in American history, they slowly realize that they don't really deserve it and can't hide the fact that they don't agree with it.But only they know that they weren't meant to be there. That wasn't what the picture represents. It represented all those men who raised that flag together and it being replaced by men who hardly deserve any credit for. It's the identification of these three men with their recognition. The patriotism of the country and the fascination with HEROES.

I've always had a hard time liking a Clint Eastwood film.I never liked his film with the first viewing.I really find it uneasy or hard to digest his films. Can't fit in or get into the mood of his films. It takes me a while.Mostly due to his pacing and execution.Only after two or three viewings do I feel the effect of his films. And when I do get what he's trying to convey,it really hits me.Regardless of all that, one thing is always guaranteed in his films, the performances are always strong. The actors in his films succeed in delivering emotionally strong performances and here it works as well.

The same can be said about this film.It started off a little slow and got a little boring. But once it progresses the story,I started to identify with the film and understood what he was trying to show.It slowly becomes a very interesting and well crafted epic about idealism, heroism, regret, media frenzy, political campaigns and exploitation.A brilliant character study and war drama. He makes everything seem so effective. And that's why Flags of our Fathers is a stunning film.

But the film still has flaws and it is uneven in places. In some parts it feels familiar, while in others it slows down a bit.But it never fails to deliver its main theme. And Eastwood still has what takes to make a stunning film.He is a slightly confusing but great storyteller for me.The screenplay could've been better.Which constantly tried to shift to the conventional War drama. But Eastwood tries to make this War drama as different as possible.

These three characters,of which two of them, really can't fit in to their new found fame.Being hailed as Heroes makes them uncomfortable. They can't take the credit alone, especially, when they don't deserve it.The one who suffers the hardest is Ira(Adam Beach)the American Indian, who goes through pain and misery as he can't live with the shadow of his own self.He becomes a drunk and lives in sorrow,as he goes through discrimination and his heroic status slowly fades away.Making him just another yesteryear hero. The other two also go through tough times,as they are forgotten and can't even get a job at a police station. These men are degraded and thrown into the slums of this world after all they've done. And their heroism doesn't last. They are only remembered when the media tries to make a few bucks out of them. This tragic life of a Hero is brilliantly and emotionally captured by Eastwood, along with the nightmares of the wars.

The Cinematography was stunning and the battle sequences were really well staged. The editing keeps the story flowing even if it shifts back and forth. The performances were all good, especially Adam Beach. The score was fitting. There are scenes of really graphic violence and aftermaths of bodies.

It's a thought provoking film with brilliant storytelling. But at times Eastwood struggles to make the film perfect. The film is really good but somehow it just isn't great. It felt incomplete and something was missing. But if you watch Letters from IWO JIMA,which surprisingly is a far superior film than this one, right after this, then you'll get the full picture and satisfaction. It feels complete only then. But for individual viewing,it's a sincere and unconventional war drama.A very rare war drama that emphasizes on the definition of Hero and what me make of it or how we create it.

Apocalypto (2006)
7/10
Thrilling! But left me wanting for more and a little unsatisfied. But Gibson is an ingenious filmmaker and this is a terrific action-adventure film.
13 March 2007
"A Great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within"

Mel Gibson's sometimes fascinating and sometimes disappointingly old-fashioned begins with the above quotation. But be aware,it has nothing to do with the film whatsoever. It sure might have some exciting and breath-stopping chases with first-rate Cinematography. It might mesmerize you with its visuals and its setting. But overall,it is still a Hollywood-ish film, directed with unconventional vision.

Instead of giving us a film about the descent of the great Mayan civilization,it shifts its focus to a full-fledged Rambo in the jungle action-adventure thriller, reminiscent of First Blood. And,if Gibson wanted,he could've made a brilliant epic about the Mayan World and added some adrenaline rushed action and still retained its focus on the important story. But Gibson is too concerned in making loads of moolahs.Since,he knows that this film is not gonna be another PASSION OF THE Christ,he felt the urge to add something that will bring his audience towards his flick.

From the trailers and all,I was really, really excited about this film.I was expecting a thought provoking and in dept depiction of the Mayan civilization's great fall. But of course, this is Hollywood, and it is only a rarity that would happen. But that is not to say this film won't entertain.Oh,it sure will. But I expected a lot more.

The story begins as group of men and women live peacefully in a small village. We are introduced to their lives and we share a few laughs and joys in their lives,so that you feel for these people. But soon after, their small village get stormed by ruthless, savage Mayans, according to Gibson. He depicts Mayans as brutal animals. Our hero,Jaguar Paw,along with his people, are taken by the armed men from their village, while the rest of his people are either killed or raped, leaving children alive.Jaguar Paw manages to hide his wife and kid before the armed men capture them.He and his fellow men are then dragged through the jungle towards the heart of the Mayan city, where the sacrifices are already underway.Where you'll see heads roll, hearts come out,and a lot more. But none of that is as violent as stated. All the controversy and hype about its violence leaves you further disappointed,as there isn't much. It's just more realistically shown. Then as when it's time for Jaguar,he is spared as the solar eclipse interrupts and it is considered that God is satisfied. But as he is sent along with others to be disposed,he manages to escape and from there on,chases ensues and the entire story takes a big shift. And then it's all about running, lots of running,to save his family.Until the Spanish arrive.

Gibson is a gifted director. And the way he directs this film, you have to praise him for it.Only,if he could have a better plot. The flaws lie in the tame script(But,no one would care about what the characters have to say) and its plot. It's a weak plot for such a big setting. His depiction of the Mayan World is unclear. But like PASSION,Gibson just transports us back to that period. He just have this way to hypnotize us and just take control of our imagination. And it is best experienced on the big screen. For that,I admire him.But his film's plot is really wobbly. He has a way to hold our attention for as long as he wants. And for this film,he holds our attention and imagination for most of the film. But his narrative is weak and flawed.

The film's other strength is film's striking visuals. That's another of Gibson's strength, just as it was in PASSION.And I was surprised this film didn't receive any nominations for its Cinematography. The foot chases were marvellously shot and puts you on the edge of your seat. They were long and intense. It's got an excellent production design. It's bizarre at times and at the same time so unique in its execution.Authentic, realistic and mind-blowing.And at times,it looks like an artistic action film.

The film is flawed, uneven and shifts to a totally simple plot outline. The first half of the film was striking,as we are taken into the Mayan Society and its stunning detail spent on its sets and costumes and its world. But then the second half's all out chases and thrills just turns it into an old-fashioned action-adventure film packed into a new cloth.

The performances by the actors, largely unknowns, were convincing. And Rudy Youngblood fits perfectly into the lead role, showing great love for his wife and children and you sense the rush that he feels to return to them. And the other actors make it real enough to allow us to feel like we are at that period.Though, the Hero and his wife and a few other actors came close to leaving an emotional impact. But nevertheless, the film definitely leaves an impact.

The violence is fairly realistically shown and I didn't felt like it was "the most violent film ever".It's nothing compared to other more violent movies.Heck,Flags of Our Fathers/Robocop had more graphic scenes of violence. All those claims were crap.I'd be damned if I weren't hooked into this film. And Gibson's film-making is the reason why you still enjoy this film. But only if it had a stronger plot,I would've considered it one of the most fascinating films ever made. But he is just trying to make a new kind of action film. One set in a time where many will find odd for an action film to be set.The only kinds of films set in ancient times that people are familiar with are those swords and sandals epics. But this one is different and set in a different place. So,it makes it stand out thrill-ride.Where PASSION was a passionate and emotional depiction of Jesus' last 12 hours, APOCALYPTO is a chase filled action-adventure that leaves you stunned by its execution. It's simple and straight to the point and devoid of political, social and current-situation-of-our-society commentaries.

Gibson might be a prejudiced idiot as a person, and a big A--hole,not to mention,a total maniac. But he is an ingenious filmmaker.Give this film a look and you will be thrilled as you won't "see" anything like this in a long time to come. And I look forward to Gibson's next venture.

The Cell (2000)
6/10
Just watch, don't listen.A very unique visual treat.
18 January 2007
The Cell probably has the most unique visual presentation. It's a creative and imaginative work of art.Once you're deep into the mind,it's pure art.But on the surface, like the Serial killer himself,it's all mediocre.

It's filled with fascinating dream sequences and an exploration of a disturbed mind which makes it ever more intriguing to watch. It's an interesting concept but it is really weak in its content. The script is flawed and the less you listen to it the better,it only makes for a mediocre film. But Tarsem Singh injects a lot of his creative and unique imagery to heighten the impact of the story and gives you a satisfying, somewhat thoughtful film.If he were given a better script,I'm sure he'd make really good use of his talent.

The story is basically about a serial killer who is in Coma and knows the whereabouts of his latest victims. The FBI wants to know where she is through him. They come across a company that deals with a new kind of technology. An ability to go into the mind and world of another person.A young women puts herself into danger as she enters the mind of the serial killer.

It's an intriguing piece of entertainment but the script is just too weak.Apart from that, the production sets and the MTV-inspired camera work, which is put to good use,is outstanding.Simply put,it's a visual fest without much strength in the writing. The film might be flawed but it satisfies in the end,if you don't put much effort thinking about the story or the writing. It's nothing extraordinary or new, except its director's unique vision.

From the cast,D'onofrio is sinister and disturbing but he's underused and fails to be anything interesting when you're outside, but when we're in,that's where he grabs yous. And Vaughn does a fine job in a dramatic role since he's always played a comic role. But here,he does just fine. But it's Jennifer Lopez who fails to impress.I just didn't see her in the role. She just doesn't fit. She's just too corny and tame and too soft at times. Her character was a waste.Yes,she is really good to look at but other than that she's okay.

It's the director who keeps everything afloat with a lot of references to religious undertones and gives an artistic look.He pours in enough of his talent to keep us entertained.

This will remind people of Silence of the Lambs or a bit of Seven, mainly because of the music. But still,it's kind of original in its execution.Just don't think much about it or listen too deep to the actors and you'll enjoy yourself by just watching all that's going on screen.

Don (I) (2006)
6/10
An above average action thriller with a really good story.
17 January 2007
Don is probably one of the best offerings from Bollywood;which makes the most pointless, dreadful and recycled movies in the world of Cinema.Don breathes new life only in the Indian cinema and their action-thriller genre but it's only average when compared to other much slicker and well made international thrillers.

Don has a good premise, quite an interesting story with satisfying twists and a stylish execution. But throughout, the film lacks punch or lacks any reason for the viewer to give it a second look. It's worth a look for its concept, which if given to Hollywood filmmakers, they would've made a great film out of it.It's that premise that works and a few other things. But in the end,it's a cool International thriller wanna-be trying hard to be slick and smart when it only manages to pull off a few surprises and remain above-average in the end.But I guess that's a very good thing for Bollywood and those people who somehow like their movies. As this film proves that if they use their heads, they can churn up good, entertaining films. But sorry,to me this isn't a great film,it's only fair. But if compared to any Bollywood action thriller in recent years, this has got to be the best.

Don is ruthless mafia drug-lord wanted by 11 nations is being chased by a cop,De Silva. In a pursuit,Don is captured and goes into coma. His look-alike,Vijay,is brought in to replace him and give some information about his organization to De Silva.Don somehow dies in the hospital, leaving Vijay on his own.Now both the cops and the mafia want Vijay for different reasons.

The film's biggest weakness is that it drags the story too much.Instead of letting the audience guess,it spills too much out and gives too many hints for anyone to spot the final twist coming.I already guessed what the twist was long before the end,but it kept things blurry so you can't make a final guess. But I was right in the end.The film also gets preachy in the second hour.It loses its excitement. The drama then lacks energy and then all that was built up for the final twist has left the film uneven. It's another of the could've-been-good films from Bollywood, who is trying to opt for some original films.

Then there is Khan, who is only half convincing as both characters. His evil, sinister portrayal of Don makes the character Don look like your average thug, who thinks of himself a big genius. And some may even forget about the film after they leave the theaters.

But,I'm not sure if I could forget Don,whom I have come to like. It's a cool,cunning,anti-villain character/role that Khan underplays. And the whole time I've been wondering what this film could've been if it were made by Hollywood filmmakers. This film is all glamor and style but little substance in between.I really wanted it to be a great film, solely for its story. It keeps you entertained for its twists and surprises.

Chopra is gorgeous as always and as always she is minimized to playing secondary character. Her much hyped martial arts training and scenes were a let down as I didn't remember seeing her perform any action.Maybe they were just plain forgettable. But she did looked good when she got into action in a scene or two.

But the real standout is Booman Irani as De Silva. He's got more surprises than Don or Vijay combined. His character is more cunning and fit and is well played by Irani.Another surprise was Rampal's character Jasjit. This is a cool character.Even being a secondary character,he's more interesting to watch than anyone else in the film. While the rest of the cast is just fine.

This film is a cut above for Bollywood action films. It could be considered as a breakthrough, only in Bollywood. There were some decent chase scenes that actually make sense, unlike most god-awful bollywood action films. At least this film had some logic and made sense.Bollywood's take on action genre is probably the worst thing in the world. If you want to have big laughs ,watch Bollywood action films.E.g.,Dhoom 2 recently, which has got to be the most over-hyped trash in India I've ever seen.

It captures Malaysia well on screen but it makes everything else that is well known look cheap.Like the scene that features the Petronas Twin Towers, there are far better movies that execute better action scenes on the towers.Movies that make more sense and capture the towers breathtakingly. This film just makes you wonder, why isn't anyone stopping them? Can that really happen? But then again it's Bollywood, and I guess the limited budget must've caused the problems. But it was a good try.

As any Bollywood film, the worst part of the film are the use of songs. It's just silly to think of musical numbers in a thriller like this.Especially when it has a premise that requires breakneck speed and fast pace.Instead,it's nearly three hours long,it drags. It also lacks any kind of suspense as it reveals too much.It tries hard to be as good as the other better Hollywood international thrillers. It's got the look of a Hollywood film but inside it,it's just an above average film. The twists holds the viewer's attention for as long as it could. But in the end,the length just tests their patience. It gets lame sometimes and the opening credits look like as if they're promoting some kind of video game.It really could've done without all that.It also borrows some scenes from other more successful spy thrillers, while one scene is a direct lift off from Ong Bak.Which makes it harder for this film to be convincing. It's trying to tell a story about a mafia crime-lord.So,why would this crime lord have James Bond gadgets, with James Bond looks and moves and a spy movie feel.It is flawed and has plot holes. It just tries to hard to be a Hollywood flick.

Well, anyways,it was a noble effort and it's a fairly average film.It deserves a look or two. However,Don deserves more distinction and should've been a bigger success than Dhoom 2.Yes,it's entertaining but you really wish it could've been a lot more than a decent action thriller.

The most intriguing and absorbing of all Espionage/CIA thrillers.
23 December 2006
A highly intriguing, very absorbing and ambitious epic that is carefully executed with dead pan seriousness. It's one of those fascinating failures that should be put aside and analyzed separately,in the likes of Life Aquatic,I heart Huckabees etc. It's one of those unique films that aren't entirely successful but leave a heavy impact. And De Niro's epic is one such film. It's so interesting that it keeps you hooked in the situations,in its characters but ultimately, you lose interest and will find it hard to digest as it comes close to three hours of running time and feels too long.

But it nevertheless deserves a lot of praise.A film that took a long time to come to the screen and when it comes, you realize how much work is put into this anatomy of the birth of CIA.And Eric Roth's complex script aided by De Niro's impressive direction makes this one of the most intriguing of all Spy/Espionage/CIA films.

Edward Wilson believes in his job more than anything in the world. He would put his life to risk to serve his nation. But the more deeper he goes into what he does, the more wreaked he becomes. His job requires him to isolate virtually from everyone, including his family.Spending a lot of time away from home just to get the job done. His life becomes a puzzle and a living hell as he's surrounded by people he doesn't know whether to trust or not.He is committed and all but he is left as an inhumane being.A being who is devoid of emotions and has forgotten who he was and what he has become. As the cold war and the rise of CIA plagues him,he is filled with paranoia and fear as he begins to lose touch with reality and is afraid to make contact with anyone. He becomes a ghost.

Matt Damon's performance is mesmerizing. It's a very sophisticated character to play and he gets into the character and expresses everything the character goes through.Never once he makes you feel like he's himself. He becomes the character, he becomes a man who seems to be a reflection of a ghost.Increasingly isolating himself from his family just to get the job done, makes him all the more gripping. He does a terrific job, which is evident. It is his best performance to date, believe it or not. He has your attention throughout the long running time and never once letting you get fed up of his character. His expressions and his movement all makes you feel sad for this character.

De Niro, who also has an important role in the film, comes off with an impressive work. He presents a fascinating character study and anatomy of CIA workings, for-adults only picture that should go down as the most intriguing films about Espionage to come to screen. And as a director he gets full points for setting up mesmerizing shots with his DOP and showing us a very ambitious epic that might be flawed, but is something really to look out for. For me, it was the best Spy film since the Bourne movies.

But the film lacks a strong emotional value.Whether it's deliberate or not,it's up to the viewer. But I felt it did show the human side of Edward Wilson. And the relationship between him and his wife was brilliantly presented.Their quarrels and troubled relationship and all are was well executed. But Jolie wasn't all that impressive.

Apart from them, the rest of the big cast was brilliant. The production boosts high quality and is filled with intricate and stunning moments. The cinematography is flawless but the editing was weak. The film needed to be trimmed for at least 20-25 minutes. It often feels like he's presented us his Director's cut.But I think it was very necessary. De Niro took his time to show the details and rise of the CIA, and I fully praise him for that. The length might feel long but it was required.

At your own risk, watch the film if you want. But don't expect lots of action like those Bourne films delivered or explosions Spy Game delivered. It's a thoughtful, deeply psychological drama. It's a thriller. It's one of the best films of the year, and it certainly is worth checking out for its ambitious presentation. And it's way better than the somewhat disappointing GOOD German. If you could bear its running time, you might find yourselves absorbed into it.

Rocky Balboa (2006)
7/10
Eats Lightning but doesn't really crap thunder. But, it's still a surprise.A Rocky for the next generation.
16 December 2006
Rocky was the inspiration for many.It was the ultimate underdog story. It was a touching portrait of a loser,a bum, who gets a chance ,by freak luck, to compete with the world champion and prove that he's no bum.I really did shed some tears for Rocky as it touched me.I saw myself in him,one man's struggle and fears to prove his worth and to prove to the world that he's not a loser. That anything is possible if you try,and that everyone deserves a chance. The innocence of that character matched Stallone's portrayal of Rocky so well that you see Stallone in Rocky. And people connect with Rocky because it told their story about struggle in life, about their love and will to become somebody. It was the right movie to inspire people. What was so phenomenal about that film was that Stallone based it on his life and his struggle that reached out to the audience. He was Rocky, the underdog. His story is the rags-to-riches story. He showed his life to us,and the lives of many underdogs out there, looking for just one chance to prove what they can do.And he overcame an even bigger obstacle than the character, when he went on to nab the best actor/writer nods and winning the film the best picture beating high profile films of that year. That was a triumph for Rocky and Stallone.I weeped for him,for both his struggle and triumph to go the distance and hold on.I loved it and it gave me hope and inspired me to chase my dream.Rocky was in my memories....But what followed after that was Hollywood sucking the life out of Rocky and making him just another fighter in the sequels. They should've stopped after the first sequel, which was fine, but they just kept degrading and degenerating his legacy in the sequels.Well, blame Stallone.

Rocky owns a restaurant now, named after his late wife.Rocky mourns the loss of his wife. He's lonely again, even lonelier than the first film.He visits her grave from time to time, like he visits her pet shop.Paulie's still the same old Paulie.Rocky sees a computer fight that pits him against a present champion and shows Rocky triumphant. This ignites the passion and determination in Rocky to fight again in the ring.Everyone think he's lost it but Rocky moves on to prove that impossible is nothing. He gets the support from Paulie and Marie, the girl from the original film that Rocky kindly walked back home and gave advices. But Rocky misses Adrian and doesn't know if he could do it without her.But he gives it a shot to go the distance and tries to risk his life for the love of the game and for Adrian. And you can pretty much predict what happens in the end after the rigorous training,if you've seen the first film.

I would suggest that you watch the original and its sequel and skip 3,4,5, and watch this for a very satisfying ,if not rewarding, conclusion. It's worth it.It's Stallone's show all the way.I think he makes better films when he's not so famous and all forgotten. He didn't take a high salary for this film ,and why would he?I mean who'd pay him another 20 million to do another dud?.He proves, like Rocky, that he can go on forever. The spirit of the original echoes throughout the film. You see Stallone in Rocky once again. And I must say,it's the most faithful and respectful sequel to the original.Rocky's only grown older but hasn't lost any of the charm and innocence.Stallone manages to pull off some very touching and emotional scenes. One really memorable scene is where he tries to secure his license for boxing. He proves that he can still act, after all those films he's done that brought him back to the rags from the riches. It's somewhat a surprise with only half-successful results. It certainly ain't going to Oscars or anything. But for the sake of old memories,it's worth a visit.I watched the original before I went to see this, because both films have something in common.

This could've been a great film or as good as the original, had it been written by someone else. But with a good start and build up it descends into the predictable. It's sometimes cheesy and laughable if you take the story and the set up too seriously. And by the end it gets so predictable and obvious that it makes you want go back home and watch the original for full satisfaction. The writing is weak, that I can assure you but the spirit is high. There are some flashbacks worth remembering.

But what succeeds here is Sly's dedication. It could've been a lot worse.Watching so many films about Sports coming out that are all the same,Stallone goes against that formula (kind of) and tries to present Rocky in a different manner. The rest of the cast is fine, nothing special to mention, except Burt Young's faithful reprising performance. The performances are all decent.

Sly has really has learned a lot about boxing these past years after not doing another Rocky movie.I can tell you that you will enjoy and appreciate the amount of realism and intensity that went into the final showdown. At 60 he's still got it.And that's the only fight you'll see throughout the film.It was satisfying and well executed, but too predictable and borrows too much from the original.

He may just fly high again at the box office. But I'm sure he's gonna fly in audiences' memories now ,as the legend once again tries to prove that impossible is nothing and restore hope in all those underdogs and people who need inspiration.I have great respect for Rocky since the original film and still do.Rocky is still an iconic figure in America culture, and Stallone just makes him fresh in our memories again. This film could've been great but in the end it's above average and decent. It is well intentioned and better than most sports dramas. It eats lighting, but it doesn't crap thunder.Still,do watch this film, just for once, just for Rocky.Once is enough and you will be satisfied with this final chapter and fine conclusion to the Rocky saga.

Good luck Flying high now.

Miami Vice (2006)
7/10
Looked awesome in its style and visuals.Really cool looking film.
27 November 2006
Too bad the film wasn't.One of the most disappointing films this year, along with Da Vinci and MI3 to name a few.Boring ,long and too slow, devoid of action.Action was minimum. The only time I saw action on screen throughout its 2hour plus running time was in the end for about 5 minutes or so,if I recall correctly.Other than that,I don't remember seeing much action. The main problem with the film was its weak script.Dialogues weak.Romance angles and sex were ineffective. The plot was going nowhere and gets confusing. And both the leads lacked chemistry, sadly.I can't believe this was made by Micheal Mann. But it's not entirely bad and it's worth watching,if only once. The cinematography was outstanding. It's the best looking film of the year, and its looks was what kept you interested. But beneath all the style and look, there wasn't much.I started watching the TV series right before its release, and it was really addictive. This film somehow tries to disconnect itself from the series and tries to reinvent it,only keeping the two lead characters.I loved the two leads and their chemistry and it featured more exciting action than this one.But still this is an above average flick, but quite disappointing one. This could've been a great film. All it needed was a little more action,a little work on the dialogues and reduce the amount of mumbling and heavy voices the actors used to sound cool and serious. It's very realistic but it's just too serious for its own good ,when I can't really take any of the plot elements much seriously.

Half Nelson (2006)
8/10
A film that is more real than anything.
7 November 2006
A drug addicted teacher is trying to redeem himself and recover but falls further into his addiction.A young African-American girl is being drawn to the wrong side as she is left alone. They both have one thing in common. They are alone and lost and they are full of despair. They are searching for a friend that understands them,a friend they can share their feelings with. They befriend but can't maintain their friendship. This relationship is often misunderstood or misinterpreted but they know that they are friends and they are trying to help one another. But they are separated by their conditions.Dan is deteriorating in his recovery from drugs. And Drey is further isolated and drawn to the wrong side of life. But in the end they find each other and see themselves as each other's hope.

Everything about this film is real. It's emotions are real, characters are real, situations are real. You can easily relate and connect with the characters and the situations they are in.It's extracted from our everyday lives. And it's an inspirational film with hope spreading out. It's not one of those clichéd and overly familiar tales about hope and redemption and finding oneself. It's unconventional approach makes it a standout film.A wonderful character study and compelling drama. It's disturbing to see one go through so much personal suffering. The nightmare of losing yourself. Some of the moments in the film really are hard-pressed but they were necessary. And they are done with mastery. This film is bound to bore those who look for those clichéd and conventional inspirational fares. But for those who are looking to get rid of those clichéd inspirational dramas, this is worth every look. It's the kind of film that keeps you going.

Rich in its performances and film-making,Half Nelson is another classic example of why Hollywood is the best.Independent cinema should be more recognized and it is.Gosling and Epps are a revelation. The chemistry and their individual performances are strikingly authentic and emotional.Mackie is brilliant as well.Fascinating look at life and its tragedies and hopes.Beautifully directed and written, with a different cinematography to aid the film. Its philosophical terms and historical references makes it a wider experience.I really loved its pacing and its authenticity.A really touching and feel good drama that must be experienced, thoughtful and intense.Definitely one of this years best Indie offerings.

Not bad, could've been a great film. However, you can't help but feel really disappointed.
6 November 2006
Da Vinci Code is one of those novels that I kept reading over and over again and yet be bewildered by its twists, turns and surprises. It was a book that had my jaw dropped wide open until I had finished the whole book and solved all the mysteries and yet kept me hooked into it.It was an addictive book with facts that may or may not be true. But it had everyone under its spell. It's one of the smartest and most brilliantly written books, where the fun never stops.A book where you will not be able to stop turning the pages. The twists, the surprises to the end of the book will hold your breath. That was the magic of the book and it was the finest I've read in a long time.

No doubt a movie was to be made. But could that film live up to its source? That is rarely a possibility, especially when the film is booked as Hollywood Blockbuster. The film is neither good or bad.It isn't a terrible film,it's just too bland and straightforward that you are able to predict everything that goes on.Even the minor alterations become obvious.I had massive expectations ,like everyone. With a skilled director, with a great cast and a producer who has produced good movies. It was bound to be great.Except, the writer was Akiva Goldsman. That's where I went all skeptical about the film.If you check his resume,it will shock you that why did the producers hired him.But then again,he did Beautiful Mind.

A great pedigree on its shoulders,it should've been great. But no,the film's execution is so uneven and so messy that you are unable to find any good points about the film.We all the know the story too well. But at least the makers could've changed it a bit rather than making a way too faithful book to screen presentation.Everything, sadly, becomes too predictable, leaving no surprises.

The book had an excellent setting, and an exciting pace that kept your hands turning the pages. The film has none of the excitement and an uneven pace that will either bore you with its dull conversations or will want you to yell out loud.I mean ,even the book's conversations felt so entertaining, whereas the film's felt so banal. There scene that were really lame and poorly executed.Something I didn't expect from Howard. And of course, lifting almost 80% of its source. When it comes to chases and action,it's fine. But when it comes to the revelations and explanations,it becomes cheesy and lame and you laugh at its execution. In the book, the the factoids explanations was what hooked you in and made the book such a classic, but in the film the facts and explanations seem really boring and lame, poorly done except for its flashback sequences, which were impressive.

The only saving grace here are some standout performances and accurate casting.Sir Ian Mckellen couldn't have been better cast in a role that I pictured him playing when I read the book. His perfect portrayal of Leigh Teabing is what makes this film worthwhile, for a while.Although, after the big reveal he is just another actor disposed.Another actor who took me by surprise was Paul Bettany as Silas.I never thought of him playing a role like this, but he just proved his talent. He manages to evoke the emotions of his character and his chilling performance really makes Silas come alive.Hanks is a terrible miscast.Perhaps his worst role yet. His portrayal of Langdon is dull and expressionless. His wooden acting really disappoints me,as I had expected more. When it was announced that he would be Langdon,I was excited. But I guess it didn't matter now. While reading the book, the only actress that struck my mind who would be perfect for Sophie Neveau was lovely Audrey Tautou. The character's description matches with her and she was well cast.Except, she couldn't pull it off.She looks totally silly with her weak accent. The makers made a joke out of the character. Most of the times, when she delivers a classic line from the book,I'd be having chuckles. She was a let down to a great character.Alfred Molino is fine. But he's underused. And Jean Reno plays his routine cop character, which I've seen many times before.I had no one else in mind who would play him but he just lets down. And as the smartest character of the book is turned into the stupidest character in the book,Jacque Sauniere. There was more depth in the character in the novel than it is in the film.

Director Ron Howard pulls a few surprising elements and handles a number of scenes with his skills but overall he lets down big time as he couldn't hold the film well. His visual taste is fine but doesn't apply to the film.Forget about the writer,he's just made a terrible adaptation. The film has a stunning look to it.It's visually entertaining.Even if under uses its masterful setting it still manages to capture the essence of the book. The score is fine while the editing could've been better. The flashbacks or the re-tellings of the past events were the key highlights of this film. That's what succeeds in the film.

Once again, the book-better-than-the-film claim could be easily applied here. What could have been a great translation,is turned into a bloated and disappointing film.It succeeds in only few parts. But regardless of all that, there is a lot to enjoy in this brainless adaptation. It is ridiculously entertaining. It has a gripping atmosphere that will keep you interested as long as it can. It's certainly loads of fun. But don't expect a classic.Another could've been better film.

The Power of deception.
2 November 2006
What you see is what you believe.Or is it?The Illusionist tricks the audience both in the film and the moviegoers. It is left to the audience to believe whether all that was all a trick or real? It's a solid entertainer. Two hours worth your time in the dark. You'll be hypnotized, mesmerized and fascinated by the Illusionist himself,as you continue to decide whether it's supernatural powers or it is real. The film leads to many suspenseful moments and intense drama until it reveals everything right before the end credits, and you are satisfied.Because it doesn't cheat you.

Eisenheim the Illusionist started practicing magic when he was young, and in that very young age he falls in love with a young girl Sophie. As they are forbidden to see each other they still somehow find ways to meet up until they are separated forever.Returning 15 years later as a renowned magician performing in public,Eisenheim faces challenge and rivalry from Chief Inspector Uhl who is loyal to the Crown Prince Leopald. But as Eisenheim learns that Sophie is marrying Crown prince,Eisenheim starts to confront the crown price. And Sophie has already fallen in love with Eisenheim. As they both try to get together, the Inspector and Leopald must separate,or else they shall receive dire consequences. The film shifts to into a murder mystery, and the mystery leads to a satisfying conclusion that will have you smiling that it never cheated you throughout and that it was all in front of your eyes but you believed what you saw.

The Illusionist may have a simple story about forbidden love and all but its execution makes it a more intriguing work. There is mystery, romance, politics, intrigue, drama, thrills, suspense, twists and turn all in one film. While suffering in many areas, the Illusionist still comes out as a winner with its splendid performances given by the actors and its deft direction.

The film boosts a gripping and absorbing feel and atmosphere. The productions designing is well done and evokes the 1900s.The cinematography is rich and a brilliant score aids along.Slick editing aiding its magic tricks. And visuals that deceive your eyes. And a few tricks of magic really have you at awe.The film's magical tone will have you glued to your seat. Its magic tricks are really well executed and it really feels like you are watching a magic show with your host hypnotizing you ,making you believe what he wants you to believe. Its deceiving moves are really what makes the film an illusion.

Director Burger has written a good script. One that relies on character development and one that has a brilliant plot. The story is simple but its development is terrific. He keeps his film from falling as there were many areas where it could've collapsed and you could've walked away from the film.As the film takes the mystery turn,it kind of drags a bit and becomes clueless. We don't understand what is going on.But as everything comes to focus and we slowly start seeing the big picture,we get our moneys worth. The director has a great vision and he is the ultimate illusionist.

The film lacks strong emotional impact. You don't feel much for Eisenheim or Sophie, but you do care to see them together.Halfway through, the whole thing kind of got slightly predictable and obvious.I somehow realized the twist early on,lucky guess. And the film's pace is uneven and it looks old-fashioned at times. And some of the magic tricks are left unexplained.

Edward Nortan is a versatile actor, and the films he has done in the past few years are amazing. He is terrific both as good and evil. And he is terrific in any role you give him. Here,he is at his absorbing best. You are hooked into the man that you don't know what his motives or plans are.He tries to make his character as mysterious as possible, and Norton looks dashing as an Illusionist, and he is very convincing with his accent even when he slips in that.Rufus Swell is an underrated actor, and though he has a larger role,he is given less credit than Jessica Biel. His character's jealousy is well portrayed. He makes his character's anger feel real and you wonder what he might do next to our lovers.Jessica Biel is a real surprise here. Not only does she handles her accent with decency, but she can act.Her small presence was felt as a beautiful and charming Dutches.Though, there is little romantic chemistry between her and Norton, and her character isn't well written, she still manages to leave her mark. The real star of the film ,however,is the multi-talented Paul Giamatti. His portrayal of an officer who is bound to obey the Crown Prince is excellent. His intense confrontation with Eisenheim is superbly executed. He brilliantly captures the confusion and guilt of the character. He has no clue how to arrest Eisenheim with no evidence and yet he wants to help Eisenheim.Like the audience he begins to question his power of perception.Like the audience he is unsure whether Eisenheim really have supernatural powers. And we as an audience are as surprised as he is when the big reveal is shown. His accent is well done and he plays the character with juice.

A mesmerizing work. The Illusionist is one of those Hollywood films that makes Hollywood the best in the world. It has those Hollywood ingredients and feels like a big budget film,at its core its more independent and original. It's pretty much like an illusion. It's a perfect entertainer and you will likely be captured by the Illusionist himself.Good writing, brilliant directing.Strong acting and rich look makes this the years most worthwhile film. And if you ask me,I would say this is slightly better than The Prestige another film about magicians of that same era.As that film relies on tricking the audience than developing a good story. In a way,the Prestige is more complicated for no reason and has powerful twists and turns that you never see coming.Whereas,The Illusionist may seem simple,it pulls a trick or two to be able to compete with The Prestige. But on the whole,The Prestige somehow cheats the audience by playing with them, while this film grabs the audience's attention throughout and giving them satisfaction.I really liked this really good film that was really close to being great.Highly recommended.

The Fountain (2006)
10/10
I am left with no words to describe this film ; an out of this world experience.
28 October 2006
I'm left speechless, wordless and comment-less.I cannot think of a unique word to give or label this film with. It's one of those experiences that will leave your mind bewildered. It's not the kind of feeling or effect that you get when you're watching a Terrence Malick film, where his images and speechless moments leave you with no words to describe the films. This is different from that, this is like transporting you into a world where images will speak to you and have heavy affect on you.I don't know what happened to me once I left the theatre, but I know this much that I was propelled into a world where nothing is impossible and Love always defies all and you shall embrace death and life. You are reborn or reincarnated and you begin your journey again. It's a process that will continue as long as it has to and that's how it all works. Its 2001:A Space Odyssey philosophy made me seriously want to compare this with my all-time favorite film. The philosophy is incendiary and matches inter wines with my philosophies of life, death, existence, nature, reincarnation and love.

Spanning over three centuries, one man's quest, destiny, love lies in one tree.A tree that makes one immortal. His quest begins in the 16th century all the way to the 26th century. And in the present time,a young man's wife is dying and he is struggling to extract a medicine out of a tree. His wife meanwhile begins a novel, called The Fountain. This is a love saga and a love that defies all impossibilities.

It's a film with monolithic beauty with most of the credit going to its paradoxical visuals. It's his piece de resistance. From his prominent first big film to this fascinating, spellbinding fantasy,Aronofsky has really proved himself to be the best in just three films. One of the best directors on the planet today. His script and plot may be flawed and feels incomplete and rushed, but it is not without awe and mind bending genius.

Its visuals transported me into a world where love conquers all and is above everything. No,it's not emotionally powerful, but its two leads make you feel everything that their characters feel and the power of love, life, death and existence of humanity and its feelings. Its picturesque atmosphere and unbelievable visuals, makes this his quintessential masterwork with limited budget.Unbelievable,jaw-dropping Cinematography, otherworldly visuals and slick editing along with gorgeous music really holds you well. And another flaw in this epic is that,it's not epic enough. It's too short to tackle or discuss the meaning and give you the answers to death and life.It only deals with the thoughts and notions of nature, our existence, and reincarnation.

But it's simply a scintillating experience all the way.I want to say so much more about the film, but I see no word that is worthy to describe it.It will only insult its grace.Only images can make you feel what I felt through this film.Truly the best and most confusing sci-fi film since 2001,an ending that will have you scratching your head. But to hell with all that, watch this visual bedazzlement.Giving this film an award or something would be insignificant. It's the experience that you need to feel. It's a one of a kind Love saga.Just go watch it ,and don't ask me anything about this film.I can't describe you the feeling I felt, only you can understand what I felt after watching it.

A reverberating cerebral experience

Catch a Fire (2006)
7/10
Solid, gripping drama that comes close to becoming a thought-provoking look at terrorism.
26 October 2006
A powerfully directed and acted drama that touches on the issues of terrorism. And in a way it favors terrorism like V for Vendetta did. That it is not entirely their fault that they turned into terrorists. It closely relates to the Iraq war,of how the US army takes over another man's land and forces them to become terrorists to fight for their freedom. The rage inside those people unleashes their inner demons and the only freedom they see is terrorism, but that leads to even worse results.

This is a true story about South African family man, Patric Chamusso(Derek Luke) who is an oil refinery foreman and he teaches soccer as well during the hectic days of the 1980's.All he wants is a happy life with his family and he's happy with what he has.He has found happiness and peace. But when he along with his wife are jailed without much explanation,Patrick could not take it.After being beaten and harassed for unexplained reasons,he decides to fight back.He chooses to fight back for what the CIA has taken away from him,his Happiness. He joins an organization and fights back until he realizes that the system itself is corrupt. He is being sought by CIA agent Nic Vos(Tim Robbins) who interrogated him during his arrest. Then begins a furious action thriller with striking results.

Philip Noyce has given many political dramas, especially with Harrison Ford ,adapting the Tom Clancy novels. So,it's no surprise that this film is a good one. It's got terrific setup and builds up the characters well. It's emotionally effective and delivers good action. It deals with very thoughtful issues of terrorism and its victims. And it nails it with a great job.Director Noyce has given you yet another effective drama that is comparable or somewhat better than the Harrison Ford films. The script is really well written and despite having flaws ,especially towards the end,it manages to bring about its message. It's really trying to say something about the American Invasion on Iraq and the state of the world today or one's country. And how one makes a choice to secure his/her freedom through terrorism.

Strong performances are the main highlight of this tense thriller.Derek Luke may want to watch out this year for his nomination and surprising Tim Robbins is also fantastic in an anti-villain role.Luke's rage perfectly shows the character's feelings. How he was abused and how he wants to get back on the one's who did this to him.His methods are dangerous but he sees his victory in it.The action is solid, and there are thrills to be satisfied. But above all it's a really good political drama.Satisfying in most levels.

A definite look is recommended.A well made action thriller that doesn't go over the top or preaches on its political terms, and in return has a thoughtful message to spread.A fine effort and will satisfy everyone.

Babel (I) (2006)
9/10
Complex, compelling, thoughtful, sophisticated, fascinating multicultural drama that every one who thinks he/she is different from one another must see.
21 October 2006
If Crash was a thoughtful, unflinching look at race relations, then Babel is about how different races misunderstand each other because of their uniqueness and the thousands of languages invented to confuse one another. And not letting them co-exist because they can never understand each other through their uniqueness.

It's a story about how one bullet sends a group of people of different backgrounds into chaos, misunderstanding, and despair. They all collide and their lives are shattered.Because they are unable to understand one another. An American couple is on a trip to Morocco as tourists traveling in a bus.And high on the hills, two boys are learning how to shoot. But one of them accidentally fires a round.Unbeknownst to them, the bullet hits one of the American couple sending her husband to chaos and tension and tragedy as time runs out while desperately trying to get her to a hospital. But he is unable to communicate and express his situation,he is hopeless in this situation. So finally he gets her to a nearby area for help.A Japanese girl is disconnected herself with life and her father is trying to connect with her,a maid is trying to make it to a wedding along with her hot headed Nephew but gets caught up in a tense situation. She is taking caring of the American couples children. The world spreads news that the shooting is a terrorist plot and takes serious actions towards it.

Totally remarkable film-making.It's incendiary. It mixes suspense, drama, thriller and deals with a universal issue so carefully, that a subject this sensitive seems easy to accept. It's another story told in the unique storytelling technique used by Inarritu in his previous films, which sometimes makes it hard to follow. It's as if you're trying to unjumble a puzzle and get the whole picture. It's groundbreaking but flawed. The film could've been told in a straightforward manner and still retained it's powerful impact. It's not a film like Memento, where once it's told in the forward moving time-line,it looses its uniqueness and becomes old fashioned. This is a striking and spot on drama, that transcends into being a taut thriller. It's powerful and told in an unconventional way.And I haven't seen this kind of thought-provoking drama in decades, about us and our differences. In another words,it makes Crash look ordinary.Crash was a misstep. It was totally undeserving of its Best Picture Award.Because Babel is what Crash wasn't and more.

It has nothing in common with Crash except the subject it deals with. So,forget about comparing the two films.Babel has a stronger focus on what it's trying to do.While Crash just plays around with it.And if the Academy Award committee gave that undeserving film the Best Picture award over Brokeback Mountain, then they ought to give this film that award as well.Otherwise it should be stripped off from its judgments and its voting system should be rebooted.Because seriously, they don't know how to be fair.

Inarritu makes each and every actor riveting and real. The characters ,and the actors who play the characters are absolutely convincing and get you the very first hour that you stay along with them and hope for the best. It's a gripping and provoking drama, thriller. It's a rare experience to have a film that deals with race relations and carves a thriller out of it and blends brilliantly.

Like Crash, you can't single out any part or any actor. It's an ensemble work, and it's best judged that way. However,I was really blown away by the Japanese segment, about the young teenager girl who is completely lost in a populated world. And her struggle to stay connected with her father really sends tears to your eyes. You can really feel her pain and loneliness. It's a powerful work.Rinko Kikuchi as Chieko is heartbreakingly sad.And I couldn't help but feel for the whole story.Apart from that Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett's segment was equally striking.

There are flaws in every film, and there are imperfections in every groundbreaking and powerful film. And this film is no exception.I was annoyed by Inarritu's unnecessary storytelling technique as many are already familiar with it.And like many people who feel really uncomfortable following his way of film-making,I too was unsatisfied with it.It's a unique way to tell a story but it can't work every time on every film. However, that should not be the reason not to watch this film.Another flaw was that some of the situations weren't believable enough. And not every actor or story blends well together. And too many subtitles.

But, this is the true Oscar contender this year in my opinion. And my anticipation for Babel payed off as it is every bit as ingenious.Inarritu's craft is unique and absorbing. And Arriaga's script is tight and strong and has lots of surprises and emotions packed in.His characters are rich and real, and his collaboration with Inarritu has once again brought you a great piece of art.A true masterpiece of its own kind.A desperate look at humankind's biggest misstep of not being able to know what we are saying to each other. Not being able to accept each other because we're different. Not being able to see beyond our suspicions and judge.

The film is aided by terrific Cinematography.Giving the film a gritty look and dark atmosphere throughout. You feel the confusion and tension of the situations. The editing is crisp.Though, the film could've been slightly trimmed. While the score and sets are standout. The setting, especially in Japan, is brilliant.Japan is shown as a futuristic urban,pop-culture world. Its looks and feel is that of a dystopian future for the young teenager.and we feel it too.

A rare kind of masterpiece and a heartfelt drama of misunderstandings and confusion due to multiple languages.A drama, thriller about confusion and suspicion. It is amongst the most thoughtful and meaningful dramas..It is Inarritu's definite work, and all I can hope is that he and his team sweeps a lot of accolades next year.Because if it doesn't ,then I don't know what to say about the Academy Awards. This film just exceeded my expectation.A must see for everyone who thinks he/she is different from one another.

Dark,mendacious,disturbing,harrowing world of Scorsese's America.
19 October 2006
One can't say enough of this man.And finally having both Scorsese and Schrader collaborate again, you should expect a lot.Scorsese's America is always a dystopian, dead America.Where the streets are filled with urban decay.Where people are looking for light, redemption, looking for a way to get out.And no one knows America better than Scorsese. He knows every street of every city.He knows how to command the lights and cameras to make the roads look perfect.

A paramedic is on the verge of killing himself. He's tired, worn out,half-dead,he's dying each and everyday, trying to stay alive. He's desperate to quit his job,and give up.He wants to go to sleep but can't.Something worse is yet to happen to him.For six months,he's been bringing in the dead. Not a single soul did he save, and he can't go on.He sees ghosts coming to haunt him.He sees all those dead he couldn't save coming after him, especially a girl whom he failed to save and she blames him.And we get deeper into his harrowing life as a paramedic in a dead city for the next three days.Three partners, three nights, all dead people coming in the hospital. He is sucked in by this job and this city.He would consider himself the luckiest man on the planet,if he could save just one person .Not even a baby lives through his hands. What's the worse can one ask for?Worse yet,he gets too close to a patients daughter who seems to have disconnected herself with life. All this and more sums up what a life a paramedic lives.

There's never been a proper, focused film about the lives of paramedics. We never know how they feel when they have to get someone injured or near death to a hospital. We never see how they react psychologically and physically when they deliver the dead. What they go through. How disturbed they get.Well, this is one movie you need to watch to believe.

One of my all time favorite actors and among the best,Nicholas Cage never lets you down. He's done many kinds of films and roles, and he's been perfect at all of them. His versatility as an actor needs to be admired and followed. And here,he only proves what a powerful actor he truly is.Tom Sizemore,Ving Rhames,John Goodman,Marc Anthony, and Arquette are all effective and memorable.Especially the psychotic idiot character Anthony plays and Rhames Jesus-loving driver.

This film is filled with disturbing, dark content throughout. You really get this disgusting feeling when you see the city's decay. You feel horrified to see what these paramedics have to go through, and how they are affected by the situations psychologically. And it just doesn't get any more disturbing than this. This film has a close resemblance to the world of The Taxi Driver.Hell's Kitchen has never been this hellish.

And you feel it through Scorsese's camera work, his command of lights and angles. You would never see a city in a way Scorsese would show you.His America is always the most different. It always feels the most different, and looks unique. He really shows his mastery in this film. It's a true piece of art,and he makes it very entertaining. He's got a unique vision. He manages to eliminate the scripts flaws and really proves that a master is always a master,an experienced director always knows the best.I would love to see more collaborations of Schrader's and his. He's really proved he's a true genius, and wonder why they didn't give him a nomination for his work.

The cinematography is stunning. It explores the city and creates a weird, fascinating world of its own. It's got pitch-perfect editing. It's a remarkable piece of modern film-making from Scorsese, and Schrader's script is terrific.Although, the film drags and sometimes has no clue what it's doing. It sometimes goes clueless and just plays around. But you feel the effect of its dark subject. And of course,it features a grand soundtrack.

A funny but really dark and striking black comedy.Filled with moments of wit and genius. An original piece of work.Definitely Scorsese's most under-appreciated.

Infamous (2006)
8/10
What Capote lacked ,Infamous makes up for it.And what Infamous lacks ,Capote makes up for it.
13 October 2006
This is the reason I refrained myself from writing a review for Capote.I already heard there was another take on the Author,so I waited for that too.And at first,I didn't had any expectations for it but after watching Infamous,it shows that it is possible to make two movies on the same subject with both being equally good.

One cannot stop himself from comparing the two films.Where Capote was a rich, complex and sometimes uneven take on the author,Infamous is a more relaxed, stylish and just as brilliant take. The only difference is the performances.

In Capote, the film relied heavily on Hoffman's performance, who may not resemble a lot to Truman Capote, but he portrayed the character not the person's look.Looks didn't matter,Hoffman became the actual character of Truman Capote, his persona, his life, his feelings, his psychology was rivetingly explored. On the other hand British actor Toby Jones looks a great deal like Truman and it's kind of eerie that sometimes it looks like as if he really is Truman Capote. But like I said, looks don't matter.Jones looks ,talks, moves, and performs exactly like Capote, but he could not bring out the real character beneath the author. That's where Hoffman succeeds. But where Hoffman succeeds, the film falters. One of my biggest regret was that the film lacked strong supporting performances.Where Infamous succeeds on that regard.

This film focuses more on Capote's lifestyle and it's satiric take also makes it far challenging than Capote. Here, the supporting performances are terrific. The future James Bond Daniel Craig's performance was something to really praise about.Cliffton's Perry Smith was effective, but Craig's portrayal of Perry Smith is something of a marvel. He gets the real character.Where Cliffton only noticed the soft sides of Perry,Craig portrays both the dark and soft sides of the character. And most critics are right, that he does deserve a nomination. My other regret was that the character of Harper Lee was underwritten and I was unimpressed the way they treated the character. It was just ignored and not as much focused as Capote or Perry. But certainly,Keener really brings the character to life in her own way,but still in an unsatisfying way. Here,it's a more focused character giving a richly touching performance by Bullock,a total surprise.

In some ways both films are incomplete when they are exploring Capote's life. Both film don't delve much into the time when he was suffering and just gives us the outline not the complete picture. However,I suggest you watch both films ,and maybe then you'll get the whole picture. And

I think this is just as brilliant if not slightly better film than Capote.Capote was a really effective and good film made plausible due to Hoffman. But if Infamous had released first,it sure would've gotten the accolades and nomination for Jones, which he still deserves one,and of course for Daniel Craig. Both films are good, neither are great or better than each other. They are balanced.Capote was somewhat overrated. This is a sad, darker film with touch of light moments. And the Perry Smith-Capote relationship is much explored here, where it felt half-complete in Capote.

Director Douglas Mcgrath is just as good as Bennet Miller when handling tough, challenging scenes. But Miller was more talented. He had a much more intriguing vision. But Mcgrath's funny touches and emotional context needs to be praised as well. And his ability to give us a film as good as a widely praised film, and making a great film on the same subject. He made Infamous more entertaining than Capote, and a more commercial film,s that everyone can actually get involved with the film's detailing of the accounts. He does his part. The rest of the cast, comprising of great talents was adequate ,giving a better supporting hand than Capote.

So Infamous is just as authentic and rich as Capote. It's third act will leave you surprised and there are vast differences over the two.But if you think Capote was a more accurate and far better film, then you should watch this one first. What Capote lacks,Infamous makes up for it.And what Infamous lacks ,Capote makes up for it.It's great to have two films essaying on a character, and giving us a great amount of detail and full account on the events. Both are well made films

District B13 (2004)
8/10
Tony Jhaa's got some challenge here!!
11 October 2006
Though predictable and familiar,District B13 is one heck of an adrenaline excitement that won't be seen in a Hollywood film. It's not best action film,it's actually an action film featuring one of the best action scenes in recent years. The best action film is packed with smart writing, characters, drama, like Matrix or T2.But here you'll get fantastic action scenes. This is the new age of action films and the impact that Tony Jhaa fight style has made ,I hope future action films can be as jaw dropping as this.Cuz once the action starts you don't give a damn about the plot holes or errors of the script including a weak third act.

Set in the year 2010,in a dystopian France,a young man and his sister attempts to get a ruthless crime lord who's turned District B13 a hell, to the government. But when the government police back stabs him,his sister is captured by the crime lord and he's imprisoned.Months later, a bomb is stolen by the crime lord that will go off in 24 hours, and will wipe out District B13.A military officer is assigned to go to the worst sides of the area, that is to the Crime lord and diffuse the bomb. He's teamed up with the young man and then they combine their skills and energy and watch these two men as they blow your mind away with their athletic performance that can be compared with that of TOny Jhaa's.It's as simple and predictable it gets.

I wish I could learn Parkour. It's an exciting sport, where you are taught to defy gravity. These guys are super-humans.Watching them do all those path breaking stunts without any safety really kicks your ass.The plot is good enough to keep you engaged. But it's two leads, who surprised me that they don't just do incredible stunts, but can act.The directing and editing is solid and the action scenes, like I said, are unbelievable.Packed with ultra cool chase scenes and soundtrack. This is not to be missed if you love action films.

It's fast, kinetic and non-stop thrill ride with enough drama and fun.It avoids cookie-cutter speeches and skips straight to the point. It's short and sweet.Vastly entertaining action film.Recommended.

Borat (2006)
9/10
The outrageously funny Method Acting ever reigned on screen.
3 October 2006
Sacha Baron Cohen went everywhere with his ,somewhat, split personality character,BORAT.He has promoted his film by staying within the character. He has been applying method acting to its most extreme. And I can't think of any other actor,if I can recall any,who could play Borat with this kind of genuine hilarity.Welcome a new kind of Comic King, one that is more winier and Divine than Jim Carrey.

I can't remember a single moment in my life when I laughed this hard. It's perhaps my first time that I laughed out really hard and loud in a public place, that is in the theater.I couldn't help it.It was unbelievable.Every scene, every joke, every gag just threw me laughing until I heard a crack in my ribs. And believe me ,if you will,I guarantee you with everything that you will laugh your hardest. You have my word. You won't laugh any harder or louder anywhere. No movie, I can make sure of that, will make you laugh this insanely hard. My head was hurting once I stopped laughing, and my cheeks gave me severe pain. But mind you, this is the most offensive and racist comedy too.Its remarks and its suggestive content is gonna make at least someone in the crowd angry.

The TV Reporter of Kazakhstan,BORAT introduces his country and all the great stuff you can do in his country. He shows you his hometown around. You can play ping pong, disco, have sex,curse,offend,sun-bathe,and all that, while introducing the #2 or 3 or 4 prostitute in all of Kazakhstan, who happens to be his sister. He is then assigned to go to the country he loves, US&A,to discover the cultural and social world of the "Best Country in the World".He gets his documentary crew and heads to the States, and then begins his wild, insane, and silly encounters with the natives and their world,as a cultural Learnings for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. But instead of doing what he was suppose to do,he goes off searching for Pamela Anderson and to propose to her so that he could take her back to his glorious country.

It's a merciless, shameless comedy. And I think this is something more original than anything I've seen in the last passing years.A comedy at 80 minutes plus, with every single minute worth a laugh.I say save all your money for this graphically offensive, explicit and the most insanely wild laugh riot.Because you may have go back and watch it again and again until you give up laughing.I've already planned to watch it again once it's officially released. And boy, what moolahs it will make. It's a phenomenon of a new kind. And you thought JACKASS was funny?Forget that, here's something that will not only come to you as a racist film but as a film that you won't find anywhere else, cuz no film will make you laugh this hard and be as daring and original as this. I think I'm going crazy.I've gotta go watch it again and I can't wait for it to release.Any more free screenings or festivals and I'm there if it's showing.

The Dialogues are ingenious and utterly laugh out loud hilarious. It's phenomenal work.I loved the script. It's main purpose is to make you laugh like you've never laughed in your entire life watching a film. It's a miracle of a comedy.

Cohen is ,I don't know, unbelievable?I see of no reason why he should be overlooked at the next year's Academy Awards. If not that,he will surely win the MTV awards for the sake of the audiences.Whatever's gonna happen to this film at the box office, one thing is for sure,it will break a bone or two after it ends.I know I broke a few while laughing my butt off.Truly original comedy with method acting at its best.

So,please for the sake of Borat,look/see his movie-film or else he'll be execute by his government.

The Departed (2006)
8/10
Dark and brutal.Scorsese's most accomplished and entertaining film to date.
2 October 2006
One could look at The Departed and can get the idea that this is less a remake than it is a re-imagining of the riveting crime Drama INTERNAL AFFAIRS.It's more of an inspiration than it is a direct lift off.The story may be the same, but there's a vast difference between Scorsese's epic and the Hong Kong Classic. And for that, this film is truly a fascinating look at the ugly worlds of the two sides of the law.

Rookie Cop Billy Costigan goes undercover and is assigned to work for Crime Boss Frank Costello and get really close to him to deliver some information about his crimes.Costigan gains Costello's trust and gets involved a lot deeper in his crimes. On the other hand ,a rising police office is actually a mole in the department, informs everything about the Police Department's movements to Costello. But things get deadly when both men are about to have their secrets exposed and the Mobs and the cops discover that there is a mole/informer,and a traitor who's getting things messed up on both sides. And then they both try to save themselves from each other and the Mobs. They slowly get confused with their dual identities and things get deadlier for the both of them as their delicate balance with the Mobs and the Cops gets them too involved with the world they're into. While both men are in love with the same women, one of them has to suffer the consequences.Leading to a shocking conclusion to this epic. There are intense scenes of violence and action and twists that you never see coming.

A Martin Scorsese film is always dark, graphically violent, raw, hard edged, and filled with memorable powerhouse performances. And this film is no exception. The Departed is something new and different .Its complex plot unfolds to an even more powerful story ,with characters colliding with one another and facing terrifying situations.Scorsese shows that what it is like to be a cop.Your life is in danger 24/7 ,and that every minute is a risk when you're undercover.Your only fear is having your true identity be exposed. And then,it's all up to the person who's holding a gun to your face.

It's a tough film he carved out,and to be honest it's a perfect example of how a remake should be made. It's actually as good as the original, even better at times. And shows that when it is helled by a legendary director who knows what he is doing the results are always great for a remake. To compare the original and this one,I would say this one is slightly better than the original.Otherwise,it's just as brilliant as the Hong Kong version. But the thing about this film is that even if you've seen the Hong Kong version, you'll still be blown away by the Hollywood version. However, comparisons are inevitable.

What else can you ask for when you have a cast this big?I could only recall one such film that had such a huge cast at the moment, and that was Ocean's 11.Where that film didn't do full justice with its cast, this film makes use of its actors and gives you a rare piece of entertainment that is thought-provoking and ingenious.Scorsese really have given a great piece of work.I wouldn't say this is his best work ever, his best directed film was GANGS OF NEW YORK ,which he should've won an Osacar for,but it certainly is one his best work since Goodfellas in the crime genre. It's got the usual trademarks of the director. The script is fantastic. The writer has done a terrific job in this remake. It makes the film a standout from the original.Rich CinematographyThe cinematography is rich, and the editing is sharp. The Score is superb,Scorsese's choice of music is great. And the look of the film and its sets are brilliant, getting us old and new Boston. And lots of cell phone use.

Well, you're wondering who's the show stealer out of a giant cast like this.Everyone got to do something with full satisfaction. But the real standout here is Di Caprio and Damon. The actors have only gotten better and better recently and here they pull it off again. They are complex and tough characters to play and they play their part brilliantly.Di Caprio's emotional stature is strong. He manages to bring the character's fear and confusion with full conviction. You do feel sad in the end for what happens to him.You will be shocked and it was unfair for the character.Damon on the other hand is superb as the mole who informs the crime bosses.Their face off and rivalries are intense and suspenseful. And of course,Jack Nicholson couldn't have had more fun doing a film like this than doing another sad comedy. His and Scorsese's collaboration is another reason, altogether a different reason, to watch this film.At this age,he could still pull off juicy performances, and do all that he's done on screen really makes you wonder if he's ever gonna do another film with Scorsese again. And his over the top performance is really fun to watch.Wahlberg is great in his role as the tough cop who talks tough to his co-officers.Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen are both terrific.Vera Farimiga was a real surprise as a women who falls in love with both leading men.She plays her part really well and you kind of feel sad that why didn't she chose the character that deserved her.

Of course, this film is not without its flaws, and I expected it to end with a bang, whereas the writer seemed to have abandoned the script's energy and just concluded it somewhat like the original film.It was an uneven conclusion. And I just wasn't sure why was it necessary to do what the writer did to the main characters in the end.But regardless of that the rest of the film is a tour de force raw drama.

A modern classic and a definite must-see of the year. This film can count on its chances of being at the Oscars next year.A sure fire success. The Departed is the most exciting, fun and thrilling dark crime Drama of the year. And it's fully satisfying and very entertaining.Highly Recommended.

Wow,that performance!!!!
27 September 2006
That performance makes Foxx's portrayal of Ray Charles look average compared to this harrowing portrayal of Idi Amin.It proves that an actor alone can carry a film on his shoulders. The film has numerous problems.Had it not been Whitaker's towering performance, this film would've ended like any other Biopic.

The film is about a Scottish doctor, who heads to Uganda to help the civilians, but stumbles upon the Mendacious Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. With him,he witnesses Amin's Barbaric, disturbing methods and tortures and he decides to do something about it.

The film is Whitaker's as you'll hear from many critics or reviewers. It is a performance that should land him his first Oscar,or at least a nomination. This ,along with Hellen Mirren's portrayal of another real life figure, surely gonna raise brows, and garner them their awards in the next year's Oscars.Without doubt, the first great performance of this year is already to be witnessed. This film is as strong as Capote.Where that film was lifted by the power of Hoffman, here it's lifted by Whitaker alone. His dark, seriously disturbing portrayal of Amin is just one thing that will stay with you as long as you go to cinema. You will always think of this performance, regardless if it's victorious at the Oscars or not.It will stay with you with the rest of your lives. It haunts you,and miraculously Whitaker brings it out. It's one heck of an eerie performance that Whitaker gives. His portrayal of a real life figure is amongst the best of all time.He is really Charming,Magnetic,Murdorous as the film suggests his character.

I did a little research on Idi Amin, because, honestly I didn't know who he was.And after I did.I had to hand to Whitaker who've just achieved the impossible. It seems that actors portraying real life figures tend to show more talent than playing a fictional character.

And as for the film. It's a good film overall.A really well directed and written film, and may have a chance at the Oscars.Actually, with Whitaker on mind, you really don't get your mind off from Whitaker's performance to judge the film. It's Whitaker that makes the film great. When he's on screen,it's like a horror show.To see his character do what Amin did. Then the film shifts focus on other character's,giving you a relief.Which is effective. It sometimes look like it's following the same path as Training Day.

Apart from Whitaker, Scottish actor,James McAvoy does an adequate job to meet his superior. So does Washington, who keeps impressing film after film. And Andersen is just fine. The film is shot at some breathtaking locales of Uganda, and it really shows the beauty of the land against the evil-doings of Amin. The film has a myriad of problems. With its twists and turns mainly. The sub-plots become irrelevant, and the use of violence and sex becomes excessive at times.Yes,the film is as gripping as a thriller. But since,it's told from a Scottish Doctor's point of view,it makes it rather unconvincing. This should've been a great film on its own,but it's made great only because of Whitaker.

Just go and watch this film. It's a good film and a greater film with Whitaker.I think we have our first official contender in the Male Category of Best performance of the year.
