Rising Son: The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi (2006)
Excellent Film
I saw the premier of this movie opening night of the Malibu Film Festival. I went to the screening with no expectations and left completely impressed and moved by the documentary. This film takes you through the skateboarding era unlike any other. The story is about fame and fortune, friendships, and the ups and downs in life. It is set in Southern California and is told through the eyes of Christian and how close friends and the public perceived him. Furthermore, the documentary was well shot and edited with a great score throughout. You will be educated, entertained, and you will laugh and cry. While watching this film, you will feel like you personally know Christian. I highly recommend it.
The Proposition (2005)
Why did this movie open at the SF film festival?
I was surprised that this film opened the San Francisco Film Festival, for I left the theater highly disappointed.
The violence was gratuitous, the characters completely unlikable - which by the way... If you make a film have ONE likable character. The script was slow, the pacing even slower, the editing yep... Even slower. I know SF loves Nick Cave and I too respect him as a musician... But that script was terrible. The best thing about this movie, by far, were the performances. Guy Pierce is a great actor, it's unfortunate that he wasn't given better material.
Overalll, slow, disappointing, and depressing.
Mad Cowgirl (2006)
Very courageous film-making
This movie gets a 9 from me for the bizarre, unusual concepts portrayed throughout this film. It is one of the most unusual films I have had the opportunity to see. The plot is twisted and very entertaining. The lead actress played the part exceptionally well, and the part itself seemed to be extremely challenging. She had so many difficult scenes that were completely outrageous, and she never hesitated once to perform even the most unusual, frightening, and horrific scenes that most actors would never have the guts/balls to do.
The crowd left the theater, excited, confused, and somewhat horrified. This is a true indie film that I hope people will get the opportunity to see.
Jimmy and Judy (2006)
Best Film at San Francisco Film Festival
"Jimmy and Judy" is truly amazing. The script is solid, and the story, impactive. After watching this movie at the best screening I have ever been at, I was left thinking about this film for days. The audience went totally nuts and afterward everyone joined in for a standing ovation. I really connected with the characters, and fell in love with Jimmy and Judy. They represent the things this society wants to hide, and the story will connect with you. Eddie Furlong is absolutely fantastic and this performance is one of the best of his career. Also, the chemistry he has with Rachael is something unlike I have ever seen on screen and one can feel the love these two feel for each other. These characters bring out truth and real life. "Jimmy and Judy" is a must see and will become a cult classic.
