Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks (2021)
Instantly a favourite
So I'm already a fan of Jodie's run, I don't think it deserves the hate it gets, especially after rewatches of her first two series. My only problems have been the amount of companions, as I don't think they've been developed all that well, and anything Ed Hime has written.
I thought this episode was wonderful. It was a simple story but gripping, nicely paced, some great music moments, Daleks were used well, some lovely moments between different characters and some fantastic references and call backs to old villains and companions. Thought Jodie was on top form and some great development of Ryan and Yaz. My only criticisms are some sloppy dialogue in places and Chris Noth. Not a fan of that character.
Looking forward to a second viewing
Star Trek: Discovery: There Is a Tide... (2020)
Still loving "woke" Trek
Absolutely loved this episode. Edge of my seat loved it. Great to see the larger bridge crew get their teeth into some action and the moment between Burnham and Stamets was heartbreaking!
I see "fans" continue to review bomb the series but have now strayed away from homophobia/ transphobia and are now going for misogyny and straight up body shaming under the pretence of not liking how it's written. It's embarrasing to read some of the other reviews
Doctor Who: Spyfall: Part Two (2020)
Excited for Who again
So I didn't hate series 11 but it was easily the worst since the show was brought back.
But this opening two parter was absolutely superb. I love Jodie but her first series suffered from some fairly boring scripts and some terrible dialogue that didn't really show her Doctor off. None of that here, she was given some great stuff to do and effortlessly pulled it off. A great script from Chibnall who historically hasn't written great Who stories but really pulled it out the bag for me this time. Also loved Jodie's chemistry with Sacha Dhawan, who did a great job with the Master. My only hope now is that this story arc they are teasing is properly planned out and has a decent pay off rather than Moffat's tactic of making it up as he went along, throwing in stuff suddenly to try and make the story work or resolving plot points with throw away dialogue. Follow in RTD's shoes please Mr Chibnall.
My only massive criticism, and this is for the 13th Doctor in general, is there are too many companions. It's not that they're bad actors, there just isn't enough time to flesh them out and make 3 people interesting. Yaz in particular I find extremely boring and hasn't developed in any way since she was introduced. Ryan is fine but I feel like whatever small character arc he has is over. Bradley Walsh is great as Graham though and they should've just had him from the start.
Also one small criticism: those laser shoes were ridiculous
Very excited to see how this series pans out
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
Don't understand the hate in the slightest
I still love this show. It is still my favourite thing to ever be on TV and I'm very disappointed to see it being so unfairly rated because things aren't going their way and some really severe nitpicking.
I am Red Wedding level devastated after that episode. The deaths of Rhaegal and Missandei were shocking as all good GoT deaths should be. I love how unnerved Daenerys is becoming because there's a threat to her claim and how it's built on the moments that came before where we were shown she may not be the saviour queen but another flawed, angry, vengeful woman. I loved the Bronn, Jamie and Tyrion scene and how true it was to Bronn's character. I loved Tyrion's obvious conflicting feelings over what to do with the information he's received. I was gripped, I was nervous, I was hating on the villains, I was excited, I was all the thing Game of Thrones has always made me feel. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I think people giving this episode 1 star before it even aired because they didn't like last weeks or giving it 1 star and using the way Rhaegal died or where Daenery's forces were standing at the end of the episode as their only justification are, frankly, pathetic and I can't help but feel that if all the books had already come out and everything had happened the same way, no one would have anything to say.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Don't understand all the hate
So as a fan of the show since pretty day one, I was very happy with this episode. In my opinion one of the best of the series. I was completely gripped the whole way through, nervous, on the edge of my seat and when Arya appeared and stabbed the Night King we all jumped up and screamed. That's good television!
I understand people had trouble seeing what was going on for one reason or another. I didn't have this problem, I could see everything and I found the darkness and the snow storm that whipped up very atmospheric and just added to the chaos and terror that was going on.
I was gutted by all the major character deaths (and some of being resurrected as wights) and I thought the Arya ending was a stroke of genius! Came out of nowhere even though they dropped a massive hint earlier in the episode.
Yes the White Walker story is over but I for one loved the resolution. Don't get why everyone is acting like that was the last episode when we still have like 4 hours of the show to go and now it will finish with the more grounded, character driven drama that made us all fall in love with the show in the first place. Cersei has always been heading towards being the big bad of the show and one of the major plot lines had to end earlier than the rest and I'm glad it was this one.
This episode deserves a much better rating!
