New Tricks (2003)
Disarming Delight
The delight of this series is the comfort felt in the comfortableness of the cast: Experienced actors performing roles of experienced characters--a perfect match. The plots of "New Tricks" are well-thought out and well-executed; the staging and line delivery is so natural that the viewer would be excused for feeling like a spy in the shadows of a group of professionals who mastered the art of deductive reasoning and teamwork--also a perfect match. Not to miss any line without having to watch each episode twice (although I have, simply for re-experiencing the fun), I include both closed captions and trips to the IMDb site for anything else I might have missed through the quotes, extra information, and the goofs. What a wonderful distraction during this 2020 year of insanity that begs for binging even one season and being given so many. From the Gulf of Mexico to across the Pond, thank you.
The Governor (1995)
Janet McTeer, The Younger Years
If you are a fan of Janet McTeer, as am I, then this British TV series, The Governor, now on Acorn TV, is a gem of her years as a young actress in B-movies in which she steals all of the scenes. Her performance in The White Queen caught my attention and I searched IMDb for more. Through her filmography that is available on Netflix, Amazon, and Acorn, her growth into a mature actress is a wonderful thing to watch.
