This was a weird mix
31 July 2022
The premise was great and it started off great. As others mentioned, half way through, the too many unnecessary flashbacks took away from the dynamics of the story. The "action" was often completely unrealistic but the beautiful scenery and the "what happens next?" kept me watching. As they tried to incorporate some sort of the mind / spiritual perspective, it only barely worked. A wasted potential. I could see this as a 90 minute movie remake with more focus on the wilderness survival skills.

Reviews all over the place...
21 May 2022
This is a weird movie. Maybe if I rewatched it, it would make more sense, but I have no intention to. Some parts were quite funny, some hilarious in its spectacles rather than the story, and some just plain confusing.

It was not the movie of the year as some say, nor the complete mess as others argue. I think it was somewhere in between. I was intrigued throughout the lengthy piece but often wondering if it's going anywhere. I have mixed feelings about it and would rather watch something "normal" next, as much as I loved the talking rocks!

Brutally awesome
12 January 2022
I have worked at 3 pubs over the past 20 years and my wife is a general manager of a fast-casual place in the USA. We watched together. I loved it; she not so much.

I loved how they managed to film the whole movie in just one shot. No cuts, no CGI, no enhancements, no second takes. That is just brilliant!

The movie also greatly portrayed many of the FOH and BOH issues, and while it was overall a draining experience, I found myself giggling here and there.

I guess my wife was not ready for this ride. She hated how the prep people were not wearing gloves, how the chef was always "taking a minute" while it was busy... and as an awesome GM that she is, it left her angry watching this movie develop and end. She said she'd give it a 5.

Different perspectives, different scores.

We both found it memorable!

Wasted potential

Warning: Spoilers
I loved every minute of this new season but the ending was a bitter pill to swallow. Dexter was a legend of a show. It deserved a better ending. I could see a follow up with Harrison but it will never be the same :-(.

Great medieval times portrayal
1 December 2021
I loved how the movie narrated the same story from three different perspectives. The visuals were excellent, acting top notch, and the intensity present throughout.

This movie accomplished to set the proper medieval mood, just to end. I wish this was made into more of a long format series where there is more room for the peasants, political and church intrigues, etc... But as a standalone piece, this hit the spot!

Excellent political drama!
27 February 2021
The show is often edge of the seat. The dialogue is sharp. Tons of twists, always multiple storylines. Very relatable and relevant topics!

Not sure what's up with the hatred for Season 3. People complaining about some swearing, really? Seems like a conservative crusade to put down an amazing show!

I wish there was a Season 4!!!!

Wow, edge of the seat chess game!

If you enjoy bank robberies and the cat and mouse concept with brilliant story writing, this show is for you. I pulled three all-nighters as I couldn't wait to see whose game is ahead more turns (robbers vs cops).

Excellent all around! Made me cry and had my heart beating like crazy!

Can't wait for Season 5!!

Volume I + II
26 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a 5 hour long epic that takes its sweet time to narrate the story. It is slow-paced, shocking, very sexual, occasionally a little funny, twisted, poetic, philosophical, disgusting, disturbing, sad, and at the same time, quite intriguing and mind provoking (for those with minds open enough for what happens next).

Volume I is easier to digest. It portrays the different chapters in life and evolution of the nymphomaniac as she needs to have sex with hundreds, if not thousands, of men. While devastating on her pursuit, the scenes like on the train where two teenage whores compete who can get more guys between train stops, or the one when a married man leaves his family to be with her just to have his wife and kids come to her apartment, are quite amusing!

Volume II explores the extremities of depth of how dark human nature can get. Not able to orgasm anymore, she does everything to regain it, such as giving up her family over engaging in sado-masochistic sessions, followed by "Sex Addicts Anonymous" (ha!), etc. It is very bleak, depressing, and shocking, but keeps you on the edge of your couch. Loved the Antichrist reference!! The ending was awesome until the very ending. Kinda saw it coming until the screen went blank and the sounds present you with the last WTF!!? of this great and heavy piece of twisted art.

great little czech gem
29 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Semi non-linear narration and creative editing takes you on a journey of a poor boy who wants to strike it rich and turns a millionaire just to go back to the streets, back to riches, to jail, to foreign countries, always up and down, then spiced up with alcoholism, drugs, sex, and all the good stuff that backfires.

I stumbled across this movie randomly but could not wish for more. Definitely a rewatch is in order. It's got such a rich story line and relatively short running time that I'll totally get immersed again.

For non-native Czech speakers the movie will lose some of the slang dialog wonders but there are also English and Chinese dialogs as the movie takes you across different locations. Wonderful, fast-paced, entertaining!

I am a Czech living in Maine for the past 17 years and downloading a movie like this makes my night. It starts off before 1989 before the Velvet Revolution happened (I was 12 then) and it goes through the transitions into the future, and I think the portrayal was accurate and funny and nostalgic...

Now it's time for me to become a millionaire!!

Hilarious b-comedy
31 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The movie starts up a bit slow but soon you're on a roller-coaster of non-stop party action -- and laughs, if you can appreciate them. It's shot in the shaky hand-held camera documentary style but it doesn't derive from it's funniness!

The story line is quite predictable but pushes it to an extreme. A few geeks throw a birthday party and not being sure if anyone shows up, they advertise it, they even have a radio spot. And then all the hell breaks loose, and instead of max 50 people, perhaps 2000 show up. Ecstasy, kegs, hot naked chicks, a stoned dog, body shots, midgets, getting laid... all the typical premises are present, but the setting takes a place in the quiet family neighborhood, burning down, overtaken by anarchy and all the while a SWAT team, cops, news... and the parents take notice ... :) Happy birthday!

I loved it!

What is love?
6 May 2012
Hats off to producing and releasing an independent $100K movie like this! It made me care about the characters and it made my eyes wet at times. Good story telling and great acting!

I love cultures and races and the interactions. What threw me off in the beginning was that most of the cast was black. It intrigued me from the start... most movies in the west you see today have a mix of races, but here the whites are rare, love it (me being blue-eyed blond)!

The audio might not be perfect at times nor some visuals but overall, who cares! It's the story that keeps you hooked. And it did. It was predictable from the start and throughout yet quite entertaining at the same time.

As far as love goes... not an easy subject. Examined from many perspectives in the movie from quite dumb to rather perceptive. Contrasts and unanswered questions. Oxymorons. Struggle. Learning. Forgiveness. Choices. Dilemma. Ending?

depends on what you're looking for...
28 December 2009
This movie hit the spot. I worked a very busy 13 hour waiter shift and all I was looking for was to wind down, drink a couple of 40s and relax over a funny no-brainer starring some hot chicks and a few LOL moments. Check.

Most women in this movie are hot, and there are many topless and sexy scenes. The humor is not necessarily top notch but it's consistent. The story is quite simple but it has a twist or two.

Sure, it ain't a gem nominated for the Oscars. But if you fit the demographics, enjoy some nice booty, like to laugh, and just wanna see something simple while checking your email on your second computer, this is great!

Unlike the negative reviews, I believe this movie has it's pros, and I'm giving my thumbs up for all those in the right state of mind.

American Pie 7
1 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a big fan of the AP series. The first two were priceless. And I enjoyed the Beta House for all the nudity and grossness. Unfortunately, The Book Of Love, lacks all that. It has a few LOL moments, a few hot girls, but overall it's a recycled B/C-style movie at its best, kinda conservative. It opens up with a PB & J sandwich scene, uploaded online, and it rolls on from there. And of course it ends up on a happy note.

Most of the actors are new, the story is quite predictable even if you're really drunk, but I'm glad I saw it :-). One of the worst AP movies, can't wait for the next one!

well....
30 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Certainly not the best stoner comedy out there but it has many funny moments. At times, it is extremely cheesy, almost retarded, but that kind of contributes to the style of the movie.

Two stoners take a road-trip through California and Mexico. They encounter different characters and a series of silly situations. The acting is generally average to poor, but the story and jokes keep it going.

I was kind of surprised by the many conservative negative reviews so far. But there's a lot of loonies out there, who network, so it's not too much of a surprise.

This a very laid-back, non-demanding, non-aspiring, good-time stoner flick with a few good jokes.

bad script but has its moments
7 December 2007
Well, this genre usually doesn't try to conquer the pinnacle of story telling, and that's fine. This is for people who enjoy watching hot chicks and silly, often gross humor. As far as chicks go, remember Naked Mile and add many more. That's probably the best part of the movie. The humor is OK, but is becoming somewhat recycled and predictable. There are some pretty funny semen scenes again, and a few other good jokes. Also some great puking scenes. The dialogs are generally quite dumb, and several times I felt like the movie was dragging. Overall, not bad, but certainly one of the weaker American Pies. If they made a more involving story and wrote better dialogs, this could had been great.

escaped prisoner comes to audition for a new musical
31 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Young man in the prison is obsessed with a singer who is to perform in a new musical its director is currently auditioning for. He escapes and through complex and often very funny series of events ends up being the main star of the musical, only to be discovered by the police the day before the premiere...OK, enough spoilers! The story keeps going on... Lots of great dialogs, awesome music and singing, and ever-twisting story (plus, the parallels between the play's script and the real story) makes this one of the most enjoyable Czech movies I've seen in years (and I've seen many)! Definitely check it out if you like comedy, drama, musicals, and theater.

Covers the metal underground well but misses a few things
30 May 2006
As a passionate metalhead I was excited to watch a movie on the subject. It has some cool interviews and the documentary tries to map the metal's evolution from the hard rock beginnings in the 60s to the multitude of subgenres today. It does well with heavy and thrash metal but when it comes to the extremes, it barely touches the surface of styles like the norwegian black metal, and omits important styles such as doom metal, or black metal with folk roots, or "alternative" projects that combine five types of male & female vocals with black metal guitars, heavy metal riffing, flutes, violins, techno/trance rhytms and ambient landscapes all in one song... Metal undeground is very complex and the variety is immense - so it is understandable that fitting all this into 90 minutes borders with the impossible. Yet it is obvious that the author is more knowledgeable about heavy metal than the recent developments in the most extreme realms ever known to the music world. Overall, quite enjoyable!

Low budget but high density
15 October 2004
A Czech tourist gets arrested in Thailand for smuggling heroin. He is sent to prison for 50 years. But what has really happened? We find out through watching his vacation footage he recorded before everything happened, and through investigation made by his brother who is trying to help him. Sometimes the movie feels like an action flick, then it's a documentary, just to switch to a drama... and all of this keeps happening with 4-5 languages switching back and forth. The camera is often very shaky but that goes perfectly with the many styles in which this movie was brewed. Overall, it kept me on my toes the whole way, and although some parts were pretty B-style, it was a great enjoyable "different" movie for the afternoon.
