Good tale for Mozart fans
27 September 2020
An interesting tale set at the time Mozart conducts The Marriage of Figaro in Prague, in 1786. In the opera, the count is determined to seduce the countess' maid, Susanna who is betrothed to Figaro, who works for the count. This opera was somewhat revolutionary in that it held up the count to scorn and ridicule. Aneurin Barnard was a delightful Mozart, as was Morfydd Clarke as the beautiful soprano to sing Cherubino on the new opera, Don Giovanni. However, Adrian Edmondson was excellent as Herr Lubach, but Dervla Kirwan just grated as his wife. The wonderful irony was seeing the angry and grief-stricken Mozart channeling his anger towards the baron in getting revenge. Lots of beautiful music, and period costumes.

The Idol (2015)
One fabulous movie.
13 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film on an Emirates flight Milan to Brisbane, and just loved it. The steward serving me lunch actually saw the Arab Idol telecasts in which Mohammed Assef won. The children in the first half were enchanting-i loved his sister Noum. And I loved the singing despite not knowing the lyrics. It took me to Gaza , the tunnels to Egypt, the urban war ravaged scenery . I found it heart-warming and inspirational. I will download Assaf's music , and recommend the movie to my friends , and ? grandchildren . ( I just can't fathom the negative review on this website). I have watched The Voice. a couple of times in Australia, and found the quality of artist poor, and the contestant I preferred always seemed to come last ! I liked Australian Idol years ago , am still a fan of Jessica Mawboy.

Mimino (1977)
Australian response to a Russian " cult classic"
17 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I watched it alone in my hotel room in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. My Russian guide, Olga took us to a well-known Georgian restaurant called Mimino ! and she enthused about the movie . I am Australian , love movies , and have enjoyed films from Iran, Argentina, Bosnia , and a few Russian films. I can't say this was a hit with me. It was mildly funny to start with, but then was a challenge to keep with it. I had a few chuckles at bits of nonsense . I missed bits of the story , but realized the Azerbaijani truck driver was key to the plot line. When Mimino was suddenly flying airliners, I thought this was all in his fantasy, but apparently not. After reading rave reviews on IMDb, I gather I missed the subtle (?) humour in accents, mistakes in grammar. It was labeled as a cult classic ! Mimino had this awful habit of flying into a rage at the mildest check . I think his airline boss did this too. Not funny in my books. The music was charming to start, then I became unaware of it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wasn't Russian or Georgian. I gather that extraordinary plane was a Tupolev Tu-144 , looks like the Concorde.
