The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Magical story telling
The fan boys really need to get over themselves with this one. The constant parallels drawn with Peter Jackson's trilogy are exhausting and without foundation - this story is 2000 years before when the Fellowship is set.
The story is well-paced, the characters are engaging, it looks incredible. I don't think you need to be a Tolkien fan to enjoy it, but it certainly adds to the enjoyment. I've been genuinely impressed. My partner, who is a giant Tolkien nerd, loves it and loves the attention given to the story. Genuinely no spoilers other than to say, if the pacing of the story is too slow for you ... wait until episode 6 ...
Maryland (2022)
Powerful
For such a short running time, this is one of the most powerful pieces of work I have ever seen. A portrayal of the persistent violence committed against women, by men. It took my breath away. Hayley Squires is one of my favourite actors, one day she'll win an Oscar. Zawe Ashton is note perfect. The chorus of women's voices/the furies were impeccable and heartbreaking.
