Boyhood (2014)
Simply stunning.
I just got back from a screening here in Hungary, and I am just not able to get the movie out of my head. Almost 3 hours, but for me, it felt like 3 minutes. So captivating. So real, not gimmicky, not cheesy. Well done, America.
What really amazes me is that this movie was able to get my attention for almost 3 hours without any breakthrough and grand action. Maybe it did so, because this movie was about real life. Life as it is. Grandmothers and mothers, fathers and stepfathers, sisters and friends, young love and teenager life. Moving and fighting, cheating and tears. Throughout the movie, I had this diverse feelings inside me, one of them is happiness and gladness, because as the movie showed us: life is beautiful. Life is extraordinary. On the other side, I felt depressed, because as the movie showcased: we are confused, we don't know what and how to do, we don't really know what life is, and we expect so much more of it. But I think the main message of the movie is at the ending. That was perfect. Every moment seizes us.
This movie seized me. Astonishing.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
Infinity in a finite life.
It is very hard to form coherent thoughts and sentences after seeing this movie, just as likely after reading the amazing book by John Green. The fault in our stars is definitely a masterpiece, in every single way. When I first heard about it, I thought this will be yet another teen love story, with no original thoughts whatsoever. Boy, was I wrong. First of all, the book is perfectly written, the story and the characters are so real, when you start to read it, you will immediately jump into the John Green created world, and well, that is a roller-coaster ride that only goes up. I saw a lot of tearjerker movies that had something to do with cancer or illness, but I have never saw a movie that was so artistically and perfectly wrapped up in this psychological universe, which was filled with wisdom. The movie not only shows us a love story, it also tries to get you thinking about the finite life, and at the same time, its infinity. However, what truly is remarkable, the fact that it does that in such a down to earth way. Not heavy quotes and out of reach definitions, just simple, yet powerful thoughts that are going through well-organized minds.
The movie adaptation I have to say was certainly not a let down. I was really scared to watch this after reading the perfection that book was, but I am glad I watched it. Shaileene and Ansel were great choices for Hazel and Augustus, they are great actors, and they really grasped the essence of the characters. The milieu and the whole environment of the movie was very similar to the book's, director Josh Boone did an amazing job. The monologues were spot on, ad the saddest scenes in the books were truly the saddest scenes in the movie.
It is really hard to create something extraordinary in today's world. John Green, you did that. And for that, you will be remembered. You are loved widely, and I am sure, you are loved deeply. Because, that is all that matters. Thank you for giving a world some infinity within this finite life.
Nebraska (2013)
This movie gives you the power of thinking.
Alexander Payne's new movie is just extraordinary. Tha black and white colors are just perfect, really matches the whole mood and milieu of the movie. When I was watching 'Nebraska' I couldn't help myself but keep thinking about what will come, and what was in my life before. It's that kind of a movie: You will think, you will experience the pain and the realness of the movie and the characters.
Fantastic cinematography, and fantastic acting. Bruce Dern and June Squibb are so talented, and they shine in the movie. They both deserve the Academy awards. I highly recommend this movie if you want to see something special, extraordinary and beautiful.
About Time (2013)
Extraordinary movie.
What an amazing movie. When I see the cast and the title, I immediately thought of a romantic cliché, with full of known plot twists, and et cetera. Rachel McAdams is known for her romantic movies, but this was just more and more than that.
About Time was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. I was immediately captured, and the cast is so brilliant, I believed every single line. Thank you for this film, I am still under the influence of this movie. It is about life, in the most raw way. How life should be lived, and how we should see the world, as it is.
Extraordinary movie. Magnificent.
