Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Felt Rushed
I normally enjoy Disney films (or most, with some obvious exceptions from almost recent Disney films). I personally enjoy a lot of the songs and score. So, I decided to re-watch the movie. What I found was a pretty good movie, but it seemed like they were rushed to finish the movie. Things just seemed to go to fast and the story did not go to in depth for certain aspects. However, I thought the characters themselves were cool, especially Gaston (why did he die).
But I can't complain that this film is good on Disney standards. Great music, but at a very weird story pace. I just wish they took the time to do the best of their ability.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Vulgar, but overall very good
Now I bet you are all tired of me complaining about the language in a movie. But being the person I am, you'll just have to deal with it.
Now as usual, I was surfing the channels when I noticed this was playing. So being curious, I watched this film. I have to note that it definitely deserved its screenplay award. The dialog was very well written and the actors portrayed the characters well. And with people like Jim Carrey in this film, saying they are great is an understatement. My only complaint, other than vulgarity, is some weak performances from some supporting roles.
Overall, this is a smart idea.
The Best Two Years (2004)
One of my favorite comedies!
I didn't expect much from this movie when I first bought this movie. I had seen "The Home Teachers" and although it was funny (for a Mormon like me), it was totally corny and stupid. But when I watch "The Best Two Years", "The Home Teachers" was erased from my memory. I enjoyed the movie that much.
It was way better than any other Mormon movie I had seen before. The spirit was still strong in it, the characters were interesting, and overall, it was hilarious. I especially enjoyed Elder Calhoun and his nerdy antics. And even better was Elder Rodgers sarcastic remarks and dry, yet witty humor. I don't think any other Mormon movie comes close to this film.
Ed Wood (1994)
Enjoyable and pretty funny!
Once again, I was surfing the 300 channels when I saw this was playing. I heard about this movie's academy awards and like most of those kind of movies. So I watched this movie, mostly because I like Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, and found myself watching a very good movie.
Like any Tim Burton movie, it's different in a good way. Its unique style of writing, characters, and humor stand out among the other movie. Oh, and speaking of humor, I think it's funny. Like where he tells his girlfriend that he likes to wear women clothing, she responds "So you don't like sex with girls", which he says "No, I love sex with girls!" It's funnier than it sounds here, since you have to see it to understand.
I feel the actors did a good job in their roles. My favorites were Johnny Depp and especially Martin Landau, with guys like Bill Murray close behind. It was strange that it was done in black and white, but I guess Tim thought it was good.
Overall, despite some harsher than usual words, it was a funny Tim Burton movie.
Rating: 9/10
The Usual Suspects (1995)
If not for one to many "F" words, one of the best movies and endings
The Usual Suspects is an interesting movie. I was channel flipping through IFC when I saw this was playing. So, curious if the screenplay was worth its Oscar, decided to watch it. What I got was a foul mouthed, but very though provoking movie.
I thought that the "Suspects" themselves, other than obviously being the center of the story, were made even more interesting, if not even funnier, with its interesting cast. I thought Kevin Spacey was really good, definitely worth his Oscar. I also thought the fights were interesting, especially the fated San Pedro pier battle. And among all else, I felt Keyzer Soze deserves both a slot on my top 10 villains and the coolest villain name in my book. I mean "Soze" kind of rolls off the tongue for me. But one of my favorite scenes was the surprise ending. Its one were you think you know it, then you don't, then do again, maybe.
So, if it weren't for the "very" substantial amount of language (parents, it's totally not for kids), then this would be one of my top 10.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Well........
Let's start with a few details. I watched this movie on AMC, so I have not seen it uncut, nor wish to. It's not that the movie was bad, and it wasn't, you can be sure of that. The acting was superb, good story, and its themes are well told. But that's part of the problem. It is definitely a Tarantino movie, with its pervertedly dark messages and graphic violence. And above all else, it had WAY to much language and a majority of them are the F-word. This caused me to like the movie less.
But with a strong cast led by John Travolta and the talented Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis, this movie means business, unfortunately Tarantino style.
X2 (2003)
From the words of Bill and Ted, Excellent!
This movie was definitely awesome. Visually stunning, a good director at the helm, and Hugh Jackson blazing a trail, this movie is of my favorite comic based movies second to Spider-Man 1&2. If I had anything to complain about, its the rest of the cast. Besides Patrick Steward and Brian Cox, everyone else was just okay. Even Halle Berry, an Oscar winner, was pretty dry and uninteresting.
The script was pretty good, though there was room for improvement. And the art-set direction aimed to please. The movie was kind of slow, but the awesome fight scenes made up for the lost time.
So overall, this was a good movie.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
The Best Movie Ever!!!!!!!!!!!
When I went to see the first LOTR, I didn't expect to like it. By now the trilogy is my favorite of all time (along with "Star Wars"). I remember going to see the third movie for my friend's birthday. It was packed with people and ready to make history for me.
The movie is pretty much flawless. The actors were good, the story and dialogue was interesting and witty, and the visual effects were without a doubt phenomenal. Peter Jackson has provided me the ultimate mix of great story elements and some of the best fight scenes ever filmed. If I have any complaints, it would be that the actors could have done a bit better, especially Ian Mckellen, who earned an Academy nomination for his role.
So to sum it up, this movie rules!
Forrest Gump (1994)
One of my Favorite Movies of All Time, Hanks Rocks
As said in previous reviews, 1994 was a good year for movies. But in the end one stood out among the crowd. This was "Forrest Gump". With its compelling story, lovable cast, and filled with memorable, and hilarious, moments, it blew away the competition.
Hanks is probably one of my favorite actors, mostly because of this role. I also enjoyed Gary Sinise and Sally Field in their roles. If I had any complaints, it would be Robin Wright Penn and her character. I mean Forrest isn't smart, but he can do better.
Other than that, and a little unnecessary language, I simply loved this film.
