The Adventures of Tintin (2011)
A masterpiece in the history of cinema
I am not a fan of Tintin, and I wish this movie was made using different characters.
The action in this film is very similar to a 007 movie. Only, it has even more action, more stunts, more dynamics, and better settings. The action scenes are even more exaggerated than in a Bond movie which can be a little annoying at times.
What is an achievement is the unique graphics. This looks like a landmark because the color rendition and the dynamic of the movements are not only realistic, but have a degree of representation that makes the whole picture look like truly enjoyable. It doesn't look like real life and it doesn't look like animation either. Rather, it looks like something in between, something new that finally makes an animation pleasant to watch, as opposed to all other animation movies to this day.
The only downside - and a surprising one for a Spielberg movie - is the soundtrack. It just lets down the movie.
On the other side, the action is brilliant, even by Spielberg standards. It simply doesn't stop without being overwhelming. The sets are beautiful and catchy.
I hope there will be other animation movies using this animation technique.
And while there, it will be nice to see Spielberg directing a James Bond movie
Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)
As others mentioned, only the first 50 minutes are worth
The first 50 minutes are nice to watch, not too scary and kids in the theater where laughing at times. Even for adults it was mildly entertaining and not boring. It has a reasonable pace, and the story catches the attention. At some moments the characters are funny and entertaining.
After 50 minutes in the movie, the father of Dracula appears along with some old ugly vampires of his guard. This brings into the movie some scary and uglier elements which I'm not sure are pleasant for small children. Also, from this moment the movie turns into a different story which is less funny and pleasant to look at.
Sicario (2015)
Hype
Emily Blunt plays a swat officer. I just can't see her in such character.
If you are in love with Mrs Blunt, you will love the film because she is everywhere. But that is it. Del Toro looks like it was hired to play against its will, he looks tired and inexpressive. Same goes for Blunt, actually, she looks like she's tired of shooting the film.
It is just a hype movie around these two actors. Sadly, they don't deliver. Blunt even seems confused about how to play her character.
Josh Brolin delivers a good performance and we hang on him hoping for something to capture our attention.
The issue with the film, is that it doesn't have a pace. The few action (and very noisy) scenes are distant one from another like tropical islands on a desert ocean. The film focuses - and this focus is blurry as well - on the morals about an honest American officer that faces illegal practices of other State employees in the drug war.
By the way, the Mexican Juarez city is not an inferno place like the movie tries to picture. This city has a very violent history related to drug and illegal emigration cartels, but there is also a large population living, working, going to school and living a normal live, not necessarily in fear.
Daddy's Home (2015)
Awful is the word that describes this picture
I'm hesitating between 2 or 3/10. How can a movie be so bad? This is not funny, not at all a comedy. All the so called funny scenes are in the trailer but they look better in the trailer that when they happen in the movie. The first 'funny' scene starts at 50 minutes into the film. Then you have to wait another 10 minutes for another so called joke. There are perhaps 4 jokes like this in the entire movie. The dialogue has no humor. We wait hoping the dialogue will get funny or the film pace is going to kick in gear, but nothing happens. Not a family film either because of the language.
There are both good and poor Ferrell films, but this picture is different. It feels lifeless, as opposed to what the trailer lets us believe.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
I found it long and boring
I am not a hard core fan, but the original trilogy was a nice childhood movie.
The Force Awakens is not like the original trilogy. It doesn't capture the charm of the original characters - Luke, Leia, Han and Vader.
This is when I realized that the whole attachment to the original series was entirely because of the main characters of the film. So it will never happen again, it is just like a sweet memories.
The biggest and basically intolerable flaw of the Force Awakens is that it's built around the main character of Rey (Daisy Ridley). Soon in the movie, her presence becomes annoying and later on it becomes intolerable. The actress just doesn't have the personality for such a movie and her character is present in 80% of the scenes.
Another minus is the overwhelming sound track.
Too little special effects (spaceship fights).
The movie never takes off, it is just a long flat plot from the beginning to the end. I am sure for kids and teens it can be nice to watch and they will perhaps love it the same way us, adults, did love the first series. There is no strong violence or language, thank you Disney.
For adults, at no moment we feel this is like the original three movies. Yet, it would be a movie to watch at home while relaxing without hoping to make us feel like the original Star Wars series.
