Poseidon (2006)
Save your money and time.
I basically went to see this movie for two reasons: I like ship disasters and it had Kurt Russell in it. Unfortunately neither reason for seeing this film could save it from what it was: A new and subsequently awful version of the original movie. While the special effects are good (of course) everything else of this film is of stink-o-rama quality.
Whether it be the crummy story lines of the various characters or the types of characters that seemed to be added out of 'political correctness', this is a film should have been sunk before it hit the big screen.
Right now I don't which is worst: The fact that they made this film or the fact that Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfus have sunk so low as to a actually appear in this horrible piece of pablum.
In my opinion I recommend that you save your money, save your time, save your sense of good taste, and subsequently save YOURSELF! Rent and watch the original and put this one in the trash bin along with most of the other big production remakes.
Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road (2002)
A most excellent film
I rented this film mainly due to the supporting actors within it. Not really knowing much about the premise of this film (and not really caring to know such), I didn't quite know what to expect when I sat down to watch it. As I was watching I found myself to be pleasantly surprised less than 5 minutes into the film. And before 15 minutes had passed I was totally engrossed! The film doesn't plod along much; just a brief background on one of the main characters in the film and then 'zing' right into the meat of the story. The story has its funny times as well as its sobering moments but regardless of what the event, said event works well and fits in with the story. So all in all I have to say that with this film that you have a good storyline that is backed up with a good cast of actors who are portraying characters that are enjoyable to watch.
Blazing Saddles (1974)
What is the fuss about?
I typically don't like Mel Brooks films but after hearing others rave about this film over the years I finally decided to rent it. Needless to say I should have followed my instincts. While I enjoy comedy of all types- sophisticated, slapstick, lowbrow and even scatological, I am of the opinion, and I mean no offense to others here, that this film can only be enjoyed if you are about 10 years old. The plot is weak but that can be forgiven as this is suppose to be a silly comedy. But the use of the racial slur joke is overworked and just about any other joke offered up in this film is sophomoric at best, stupid at worst. And while there are a couple of scenes that may bring a smile or a laugh to the viewer, I think most would be better off watching this film for what it is: A bad film that is a showcase for the various supporting Hollywood actors and actresses from about 30 years ago. If you want a western comedy I would recommend renting "Support your local Sheriff" as I think you will probably be disappointed in this film.
The Intruder (1962)
I'd highly recommend this film.
Starring William Shatner and directed by Roger Corman (who later went on to produce other such memorable films such as The Wild Angels, Death Race 2000 and Grand Theft Auto) I went into this film with the skeptics mindset of not expecting much but in reality I found this film to be quite enjoyable! Set in the South in the early 60's, this film is not only a social commentary of the racism that existed at the times but it also gives us a view into the mindset of those charismatic individuals who inspire the masses and of those people that partake in mob mentality.
Shatner does a credible job as the instigator who is in town to stir up trouble with regards to the "intergration problem" and Corman's approach to this topic is taken with a serious yet not heavy handed approach.
If you are easily offended by racist terms, you will probably not enjoy this film but for all others I think you will find yourself in for a very pleasant surprise.
Bataan (1943)
A real good one...
I first saw this film about 20 years ago and absolutely loved it. When I purchased the film recently, I can still say I absolutely love it. Of course when seeing the film today, the viewer may think that this film is a bit anachronistic, especially considering todays jaded skepticism and mentality of "question everything, trust no one". But given the year when the movie was made (1943) it falls right in line with the mindset of the times. The acting and sets are pretty much of the standard 30's and 40's Hollywood flair with the bad guys being very bad, the good guys being very good and those that die in battle doing such without much complaint or bloodshed. But all aside, I was able to get drawn into the characters lives to the point to where I was concerned with who lived and who died as well as being on the edge of my seat with all the ensuing tension that only a good war picture can give. All in all, I would rate this film a must see. No, this film won't deliver the intense realism as does Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan but it also doesn't deliver the always painful to watch introspective/flashback ponderings that Thin Red Line does. Another plus is that there ISN'T a love story plunked down in the middle of the story line!
