Colorado Christmas (2023)
Comforting piece of Christmas
There aren't any surprises here, but Colorado Christmas gave me almost exactly what I was looking for: a warm, romantic piece of comfort for Christmas. After a hard day taking care of everything, I just wanted to get under a blanket and watch a movie to make me feel relaxed and happy. This little movie is just what the doctor ordered. Sweet as Christmas cookies. The only surprise was an unexpected appearance of Diana DeGarmo! She was one of my favorite American Idols so it was great fun to watch her. Don't expect exploding cars or nudity and bad language, but do expect to feel the warmth of love and Christmas. Just what the doctor ordered.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020)
Just dreadful
Sooooooo boring!! I kept waiting for a plot, for something to make sense. Ugh. Just nothing. I don't get it. It doesn't have to like the original Penny Dreadful, but if it's going to have the name attached to it shouldn't it have some of the same flavor? God, so disappointed. I thought the original was brilliant. This is just a dull mess.
Bombshell (2019)
Oscar contender
This was probably the best film I've seen in years!!! Charlize Theron was remarkable as Megan Kelly, almost eerie in her portrayal. Margot Robie was a revelation. Kate McKinnon was underutilized and Nicole Kidman was almost in a throwaway role, but the casting was spot on. I was terrified for these women, enraged at their situation and appalled at the culture that was allowed to form and thrive. How anyone could call this a "left wing" movie is beyond me, unless sexual harassment and abuse can be considered "right wing " values. It has nothing to do with it being about Fox News. We could have climbed into many corporate climates. It just so happens that Fox News prides itself with being "fair and equal" and the fall from grace was so very far and so very loud. An empowering and extremely important film. I have to note that the showing I went to had a small audience of 10 people, only two were men. Both men walked out before the film ended. The women stayed and applauded the film. Perhaps too much truth? Maybe they were expecting a film where 3 blond hotties got into cat fights? Oh, well. They should have stayed. What if a woman in their life was subjected to this behavior? Would it become important then? Or just another "left wing" piece about how women have actual brains and aren't pieces of meat to be ogled and discredited? Should be required viewing.
Boyhood (2014)
Huh?
I don't get it. I really don't. I thought this was going to be the movie of the year, what with all of the awards already presented to it. I thought, this should be amazing!! Twelve years!! The actor's committed to this project for TWELVE YEARS!! Do you know what's happened to me in the last twelve years??? Let's see....so much that I cannot even begin to list all of it. Some of it joyful, some terrifying, some heartbreaking. Do you know what happens to the family in Boyhood for twelve years??? NOTHING!!!! NOTHING HAPPENS!!!! It seems like most of the good stuff happens between the years. The only reasonably compelling part was dealing with Patricia Arquettes broken relationships. But even a lot of THAT happened between scenes. WHY??? Isn't that the part that might make this worth watching???? Patricia Arquette is the only person that even gives a decent performance. And I LOVE Ethan Hawke!! But he doesn't have anything to do in this movie!! And the kids???? AWKWARD and WEIRD performances. Good as children, goofy as adolescents and just plain BAD as young adults. What the heck??? Why do people think this is good??? This was three hours of WAITING for something to happen. I've had better times in the waiting room of my doctor's office...and I HATE the waiting room at my doctor's office. Ugh.
Into the Woods (2014)
This is what it should be
It is hilarious to me that people are shocked that this is almost totally sung. It is a musical. Not only that, it is a SONDHEIM musical and if you've ever seen any Sondheim, they are almost all primarily sung and not spoken. This has always been my least favorite of the Sondheim musicals I am familiar with and he has always been my favorite Broadway composer. This film changed my opinion. I now rank Sondheim in the range of genius and this musical among my favorites. The film translated "Into the Woods" beautifully from stage to screen and even managed to make more sense on screen than on stage!!! Meryl Streep is so amazing, I lack adequate adverbs. Having recently lost my mother "No One is Alone" had me in tears. Chris Pine is hilarious and gorgeous as Prince Charming. Johnny Depp is a creepy, slimy Big Bad Wolf. Emily Blunt is beautiful and touching. I could go on and on, but I won't reveal anything to spoil the good times. Just be aware, this IS NOT A KIDS MOVIE!! It IS NOT A Disney FAIRYTALE!! If that is what you're looking for, go see the SpongeBob movie or something. This is a gorgeous adaptation of a group of fairytale characters taking the wrong paths and making a lot of the wrong decisions. It was touching and sweet and will live on with you long after you leave the theatre.
Black·ish (2014)
Funniest Show in YEARS!
I really felt like the age of the "sit-com" with truly funny shows was over when Cheers and Frasier went off the air. Finally, here is a show that is supposed to be funny that really IS! I hope this stays on the air. I have such hard days, it is so nice to be able to laugh out loud. Give this show a shot and if you don't laugh, I don't think you're alive. My daughter and I have a standing appointment to watch this show when it's on. The characters are a little off the wall, but I love to see them stumble through their days just trying to get by and maintain their dignity. It's always funny and sometimes really cute. I love the mom and dad. I just love this show.
