Buried Secrets of Cordoba (2020)
Very poor quality documentary on a city rich in history
Cordoba might be one of the most interesting cities in Europe with a ver rich history. It's therefore quite an achievement to creat such a poor quality documentary on this city, it was literally hard to watch... The story that's being told here goes all over the place, it's totally unclear where the narrative is going, it seems like a stream of random facts and ancient buildings put together. Centre of the story is the 3d laser scanner device which is treated like some state of the art new hightech technology that will change everything we know and which is surely the future of modern archaeology. The device is shown constantly during the documentary even though it's in fact completely irrelevant and nothing new at all. Having studied archaeology over 20 years ago I have been using similar devices on dig sites. Obviously creating 3d models of these scans is easier now, but still nothing new and not something that gives us any information we already knew. It gets boring really quickly in the documentary to keep seeing this scanning device being treated like a make-believe holy grail of modern archaeology. It's not.
Also incredibly annoying in this documentary is the synchronisation of voices. Instead of just using subtitles all the experts voices are dubbed with voice actors who do a really terrible job in bringing across the narrative. Bad accents, wrong emphasis and extremely dull, uninspiring long monologues in one tone have replaced what the original people said in Spanish with clearly much more enthusiasm and inspiration. Such a waste.
I love archaeology, I love roman history and I love the city of Cordoba. But this documentary was just a pain to watch.
Sucker Punch (2011)
One of the most underrated movies ever
This movie is complete chaos from beginning to end, it's insanity, over the top, overacted, inglorious bastards meets Lord of the rings meets moulin rouge meets AHS Asylum meets...
Amazing visuals, spectacular music and great acting.
The movie did horrible in the box offices and even Snyder himself claims it didn't age too well. I disagree, even today it's a great movie, maybe it's even better now since after all these years a lot of the content is still very much current.
So ignore what the critics said and watch it with an open mind. You will not be disappointed if you expect complete chaos.
Vesper (2022)
Very interesting start of a series,
Loved the movie, the story, the atmosphere, the dystopian world created. Good acting, story well delivered and accompanied by some amazing mesmerising soundtrack. However, at the end of the movie I felt the story was in fact just getting started... I have more questions then answers, a lot of things, characters, worlds and storyline have been introduced, but I still have no idea what they mean, where they lead to, what's coming next. So this movie was amazing, but just as an introduction to this world, to this story... where is the rest of it?? Will there be a part 2? Will questions ever be answered? I don't know...
Resident Evil (2022)
Honestly don't get it...this was brilliant!
Missed this series until Netflix recently recommended it to me. Watched it, loved every second of it. Until the last episode.... immediately checked for season two only to discover it's not there and will never be there!
This was a great series, good characters, some nice plot twists, good enough acting, nice visuals. I really don't see why it was received this bad. Loved it! Except for there not being a second season. That truly is a bummer....
Sure, it's not the new Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or the next Hitchcock. But it's definitely very good entertainment. So what's the deal here? .
Willow (2022)
Does not deserve the hate it gets, but isn't good either
Quite honestly, this series is just bad. But it does not take itself seriously. At. All. So anyone posting reviews about this that are seriously explaining how terrible it is just didn't get it.... There's so many jokes, winks, nods to the movie and occasionally jokes about the weird plot that I really don't see how so many people missed it. This show is just fun. A mix between fantasy, a fairytale and comedy. So most definitely not good. At times the acting is just bad, the plot a disaster and the effects mediocre at best. And that's all very clearly done on purpose. Apparently Disney misjudged its audience... I thought they dumbed it down quite a lot already, but not enough it seems.
Shame, the show deserves better than all the hate it gets.
If you loved the original movie and understand some sarcasm, than you should love this show! Just don't expect it to be some serious Lord of the Rings style epic adventure story, because it's not and it was never intended to be anything serious. Just look at the teaser Disney gave at Disney plus day... That was just one big, epic joke. Gave it away pretty much this show was never intended to be taken seriously in any way.... Loved watching it, loved the 80s style jokes and fighting scenes. All in all: it's just a lot of fun!
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Honestly, people giving this low scores just didn't get it...
I thought this was just some simple love story movie, fun for teenage girls. My daughter made me watch it and wow! My expectations couldn't be further off... This may very well be one of the best movies I saw in a long, long time. It's a confusing yet intriguing trip that's a mix between Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind and the Truman Show. It took me quite a long time before I started figuring out what was going on here. In the end all the subtle little hints throughout the movie fell in place, and there's many! If you blink at the wrong time you'll miss them. Some are just a few frames in the movie... The acting of both Florence and Harry is spot on and they have great chemistry on screen. It all works. But the movie definitely is some mindfck. I can only assume people giving this 5 stars or less didn't understand what the movie is about. Possibly because they also expected some thirteen in a dozen teenage girl romantic love story. It's not.
Monster (2022)
Brilliant, but slow
This is one of these stories that keeps pulling you in. Obviously because of the chilling true story behind it, but also because of the way the show is build up. It truly explores the life of Dahmer where the main focus is not on the gruesome killings themselves (most of it isn't even shown!) but the story behind it and how someone could get that sick and twisted to do these things. Because of this build up the show can be slow at times. I myself quite frequently found myself wandering of and sometimes even turning it off halfway through an episode. But it keeps drawing you back, wanting to know more. This is also because of the brilliant and oh so subtle acting of Evan Peters. It is a real shame though that Netflix/the producers didn't take the effort to include families involved in the actual story first. It's not that they HAVE to do that, but with sensitive stories like this they SHOULD have.
Old (2021)
Typically Shyamalan: nice atmosphere, mediocre storyline, horrible ending
Same old, same old. Love the creepy atmosphere, love the idea behind it, some mystery beach where people grow old rapidly. But the storytelling is bad, the storyline is forced and the ending? Like with most of his movies: just terrible. It leaves the audience with a feeling of " what the...? That was it?? Can I have my time and money back please?".
I guess this is the last Shyamalan movie I tried watching, I'm done. The sixth sense was amazing, 10 out of 10. Everything the guy made ever since was terrible.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
Not even close to what Harry Potter was, but definitely a step in the right direction
Fantastic Beasts (1) was pretty amazing, for starters. Crimes of Grindelwald was just a mess. Secrets of Dumbledore was good. But not amazing yet. Story wise it's a big leap back on track. Good narrative, well told combined with stunning visuals and amazing creatures. A good amount of nods to the Harry Potter world that do serve a function in the story (biggest flaw of the previous movie: the winks to things and characters we know from the Potter movies were way too forced).
Only point of criticism: the ending was long, rather boring and it's lacking a cliffhanger! Like, completely lacking one. I mean: I do still want to know how the story proceeds, but it's not that good old feeling of "I can't wait until the next movie!".
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Too complicated, but brilliant nod to the original
Honestly? I don't get it. Watched the movie and I don't understand the story.... What the f just happened?? I'll be needing to go see it a second time I guess.
So why 10 stars? Simply put to compensate for the many complaining people who gave it 3 stars or less because they didn't get it. It's a pretty brilliant plot that makes you question the original trilogy while incorporating a lot from these movies. It could've been cheap and cheesy, but it works. This movie deserves better than 3 star reviews of people who just didn't get it. Watch it again instead of just whining about it.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Nice retro feel, but the storyline is all over the place
I love the retro feeling, including the practical special effects of past era's. Really nice winks to the old movies. But the story? Really, what were they thinking?? It's beyond ridiculous how they tried to tie in so many storylines and characters. The whole show seems to be nothing more but an excuse to bring old star wars characters back to life. The result is utterly boring to watch. I gave up halfway through episode 3. I truly don't understand the many positive reviews... I love Star Wars! Watch everything Star Wars related... But can't bring myself to watching this garbage.
Mother/Android (2021)
Could've been good, but isn't...
This movie has a rather slow start that takes around 50 minutes. Than there's some good action, a nice plot twist, followed by a slow ending that's supposed to be dramatic, but just feels forced and unrealistic. Waste of pretty descent acting and a nice atmosphere at times. It's the story that's the real problem here. The movie is boring, uninspiring, unrealistic and basically just a waste of anyone's time.
Three stars for the plot twist and the acting.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Black humour with a very serious and accurate message
This is a movie with a very society critical undertone, yet it does not take itself all that seriously. With an insane cast this movie truly is a treat and while it'll make you laugh, it'll also make you think.... because the storyline is pretty ridiculous, it's actually quite realistic as well. A comet the size of mount everest is racing towards planet earth and some blonde idiot in the White House and her multinational friends tell their followers not to look up, and they don't.... until it's too late. Ring any bells?
Seuwiteuhom (2020)
I don't get it
A mix of terribly bad CGI, good special effects and bad special effects and a story line that makes zero sense. I managed to work myself through a few episodes but still have absolutely no clue what it's about.
I don't understand the many good reviews... What am I missing?
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Deemed impossible to adapt for the screen, yet they did it
I'm a fan of the books, but reading them was a true challenge. Because let's face it: Jordan had a brilliant mind and his imagination was wondering, but he wasn't a great writer.... The story kept going and going and going at a slow, slow pace, resulting in no less than 14 books, plus companions. Impossible to turn into a movie or series. But they did it. And quite successful so far. Sure there are things that could've been better. The casting is just strange, why all the different skin colours etc.? It makes zero sense to see different culture actors play one culture in the story. Like how did that happen?? And the costumes also don't help. Too clean, too modern. Add to that some great haircuts (really? They're traditional farmers who work hard yet go to an amazing barber every other week or Sotherton?). They also made some questionable decision in the story line. Obviously they had to scrap a lot of the source material (I would've loved to have seen more of the Shadar Logoth storyline!), so why add a completely new character in the form of Perins wife? It adds nothing to the story...
But in the end it looks fantastic, and it still is a good story with pretty solid acting, good scenery, nice effects, enough stolen from Lord of the rings (Jordan never made it a secret he had done that!) without being an exact copy of it. So far I love it. Can't wait to see more.

Awake (2021)
Would've been a nice pilot episode for a Netflix series
There are quite a few good things going on in this movie. There's disaster, drama and the mystery of people not sleeping. You get to know a lot of people that must somehow be connected to the story and the plot thickens. Tensions build up. People get agitated and the mystery of staying awake gets threatening. I became curious about the rest of the first season. But it being a movie there isn't a rest of the season....
So the movie had to end.... which meant no explanation on why everyone stays awake , everyone suddenly going bezerk and killing each other. And despite the fact the world's finest scientists couldn't figure out what to do in days a little girl all of a sudden finds a way to sleep again by dying first and getting back to life....? Like, how does that even work??? No explanation. So after the movie your left with many unanswered questions, which is just annoying! Shame. It started promising, it ended.... well... it didn't really! Absolutely no clue what happened with many of the characters, no explanation whatsoever about what happened and no idea what the main characters are going to do next now that they've found the cure. What were the writers thinking??
Tenet (2020)
What on earth did I just watch??
First thing that struck attention when watching this movie is the sound. I literally spent the first 15 minutes trying to find out if I had some sound settings wrong... but I didn't. Google learned me a lot of people had trouble with the sound in this movie. I had to turn up the volume a LOT to even hear the actors a bit, but now sound effects and music were too loud and the actors were still difficult to hear. Who did the sound mixing in this movie?? It's terrible!
But even worse is the plot.... I really wanted to like this movie, but I truly have no clue what it's about!! The plot goes all over te place. After 30 minutes into the movie I was completely lost. And it stayed that way. I have my University degree so I guess I'm not that stupid... but it felt like I was just watching completely random scenes with no cohesion whatsoever.... I watched the movie, but I genuinely don't know what it's about. Not a single clue. They say you should watch it a second time, but I very much doubt it'll make any more sense a second time.... It was already a real challenge to watch a single time...
Bliss (2021)
Brilliant movie, but not as mind-blowing as it was supposed to be
It's marketed as a sci-fi. This is clearly done to make you as a viewer believe in the things the main is experiencing. You're supposed to think ot actually is a sci-fi only to find out it's actually a fantasy, a psychosis if you will, of the main character brilliantly portrayed by Owen Wilson. There are some gems of clues hidden everywhere in the movie. Fi. People appearing multiple times (a glitch in the Matrix ) somewhere in the background....
However, some of the clues pointing to the actual story were just way to obvious. Not subtle enough. In the first minutes of the movie you see the rehab centre, you see him crushing pills.... Because of this I already figured out the movie was about drugs at the moment the crystals came into the picture. Which is a shame.... It would have been amazing movie when you as a viewer would remain blissfully ignorant and would actually be sucked into the fantasy/psychosis of the main character believing it's real with him. But since the clues pointing towards drugs were just not subtle enough that didn't work. Still it's a hell of a ride, this movie. It deserves more credits than it's getting from most. Just like that other movie in the same category, also with a brilliant actor most people only know as this comedian: Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.
People giving this movie a low rating should definitely watch it again. They simply missed the clue of the story (maybe it wasn't that obvious to everyone?).
Artemis Fowl (2020)
I knew it was bad before watching it. But still I was disappointed.
Great story (in the book), great visuals and some descent actors. What could go wrong? Well, everything!
The story is all over the place, only held together a bit by a voice over (talk about something that might have given the makers a hint it just wasn't good enough... a good movie doesn't need a voice over to explain the viewers what's going on because they themselves can never figure it out...). The acting is pretty bad and at points it was just literally laughing out loud on how incredibly unrealistic some characters were (Judi Dench, come on! Even you can do much better!). There's no start, no climax and no ending. It's just a constant stream of unrealistic nonsense pouring out of the TV. And thank God it was just on TV and I didn't need to buy a theatre ticket for it, because that would've been a waste of money.
Abandoned Engineering (2016)
Great show, but it's just impossible to watch!!
I love this show. Beautiful places captured in great ways on camera with just enough background info.
Unfortunately this show isn't available anywhere! It was on discovery channel for some time, but unavailable online. I missed quite s lot of episodes and can't watch them.... shame!
The Walking Dead: How It's Gotta Be (2017)
Bad plot and way too dark
Seriously, too dark. Literally. Just couldn't see a thing. Had to fight my way through this episode purely on sound. The screen remained black 90% of the time... and what is it with Carl?? Come on! He's the hero of the show. In this episode even more. And than he leaves us with a simple bite?? Nothing heroic, no big moment.
Terrible plot. Terrible light. Show is getting worse every episode. What a waste.
The Walking Dead: The Day Will Come When You Won't Be (2016)
All hope is gone
This was some heavy stuff. I just watched this episode and I actually feel physically sick. And I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not. Yeah, I feel the pain. Which points to good storytelling. I know it's fiction, but still I'm pretty distraught about what happened. But on the other hand, it's just to much. I mean, it was obvious something terrible was gonna happen. How else to break someone as strong as Rick. But I don't think it had to be that violent with two main characters dying in an absolutely horrible fashion.... the power of the show to me is that no matter how bad things get you always feel that glimmer of hope things will work out and everyone can be happy. But now? I don't feel it. There's simply no way they can recover from this. Not if they keep it realistic. There's no room for a possible happy ending anymore. And that just sucks.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
A fun movie? It's a disaster
I see people asking 'why the hate? It's still a fun movie '.
It just isn't. It's terrible in every single way. From start to finish it's an insult to the previous Indiana Jones movies. The story is totally unbelievable, even for an Indiana Jones movie. The acting is terrible, no matter how good singer of the actors really are. The lightning in every scene is wrong and 90% of the cgi is a joke. Even some amateurs with a descent computer and Blender can do that way, way better! Hell, the digital effects in the original ancient Indiana Jones movies were much better.... I can't think of a single good thing in the entire movie. A total waste of talent, a total waste of money and a total waste of time.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Great series with a great ending
It is really a shame this many people didn't see the events in season 8 coming.... many people are complaining, while the finale is actually the best possible way for this story to end! It all fits perfectly.
Daenerys has been losing it during the last few seasons. I really can't imagine how people didn't see that coming? It only makes sense Tyrion didn't see it coming. For the first time in his life he had found someone he could look up to and who he thought he could trust.... of course Varys wasn't blinded by Daenerys' presence, so he did see it coming. Unfortunately no-one listened to the master of whisperers.... people just didn't want to hear the truth (just like many GoT 'fans' still don't want to hear it...).
There are great similarities between Daenerys and many real world rulers who thought they could change the world into a better place, no matter the costs... Daenerys' character was actually inspired by Hitler. And still people say her story isn't realistic at all.... take a look at history. That's as real as it can get.
Also I've seen complaints about Cersei's death being totally non-heroic.... that is however the entire point of it... Cersei considered herself to be bigger than life. For her to die anonymously in some basement by a cave in is the worst way for her to go. No songs will ever be written about that pathetic death....
I loved all 8 seasons and can't imagine a better ending for this wonderful series. 10 out of 10. Without a doubt.
And to everyone who's complaining about season 8: please watch the entire series again and see the incredible amount of hints and clues that gave away it would all end in disaster like it did.... just like Tyrion and like John Snow you have been blinded by your total faith in Daenerys being the saviour that would put an end to all injustice. When watching it a second time you may not believe how you didn't see this coming the first time watching it. It was that obvious! And it really the only proper way this story could have ended...
