The Genius of Charles Darwin (2008)
One of the best documentaries about evolutionary science.
If you want to get an understanding about Darwinian Natural Selection and how it works then this is required viewing. Richard is wonderful as always in explaining in a matter of fact way how the process works. It's such a simple process but it's not intuitive and as such is very much misunderstood. Unfortunately it leads to most people thinking it's "survival of the fittest" when it's really about survival in the environment to maturity and ability to reproduce. I cannot recommend this documentary enough. Beautifully produced and directed - it should be shown in every school wherever science taught.
The Big Broadcast (1932)
A refreshingly funny early musical
The Big Broadcast was the first major film of singing sensation Bing Crosby in which he had a starring role. Playing a fictional version of himself, Bing puts his comedic skills (that he had worked on for the shorts he made for Mack Sennett) to great use. The songs, direction by Frank Tuttle, the crazy special effects (that are amazing for 1932), and the list of famous radio stars of the day make this a really fun and entertaining film. This has recently been restored by UCLA but as yet there has been no official DVD release which is a pity. I rate this amongst the best of Bing's early films as it shows his complete naturalness in front of the camera whilst his renditions of Dinah, Here Lies Love and the hit song Please highlight his wonderful voice.
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
A flawed yet heart breaking and satisfying end of an era
I know there are a lot of people who didn't like this finale. I completely understand why and to some extent i agree with some of the things you have said. But I can't ignore the feeling that this episode left me with after the credits rolled. I was so heartbroken when Dean died and his goodbye with Sam was phenomenal acting on J2's part. The episode was meant to serve as an epilogue to the series instead of some big grand fan service-y endgame style finale (even tho we did get a fair share of fan service in this episode) because the PLOT of the season and series finished last episode, while the STORY wrapped up in this episode. What I mean by that is the plot was the whole confrontation with God and the brothers along with Cas and Jack trying to defeat him this whole season, whilst the story was the relationship between the brothers and how that evolved and ultimately ended in heaven.
The only flaws I do have with the episode (ik im giving it a 10/10 and the reason is that I just love it so much) are:
- should have brought Cas, John and Mary Winchester, Ellen, Jo, Ash and Eileen back in the final scene outside the roadhouse. That would have allowed it to feel more along the lines of the whole "family don't end with blood" theme and it would have also been great to see those significant characters back.
- Could have killed Dean another way that involved him sacrificing himself in the H E A T O F T H E M O M E N T for Sam. (but I get why they did what they did, because if Dean had just been stabbed then Sam could have had time to carry him out to the Impala and bandage him up until they got to a hospital where Dean would have been fixed up. So that's why they had him shoved against the nail thing so he wasn't able to move and therefore not able to get the proper help to heal his wound)
Finally tho I do want to address the negative reviews quickly before I end this review. I understand that a large majority of people are frustrated and depressed with how this ended so if you are feeling this way just take a step back from the show and process it elsewhere by doing other things you love and getting your mind off of it. That can help. Also try not to let this one episode ruin 15 years of this beloved show. Remember, its the journey not the destination thats most important.
But still imo, such a great finish.
Man on Fire (1957)
Well worth seeing
A film that is rarely seen today is a must see if you get the chance. The acting is terrific with Bing Crosby giving a performance worthy of another Oscar nomination - in fact all the cast do an excellent job in this well constructed drama about the ugly side of divorce and custody. The film deals very well with these issues and is still relevant even though it was made in 1957. Also this is one of the very few films in which Bing Crosby doesn't sing - except over the titles at the start of the film. Hopefully this will eventually gain a DVD release and a chance to be seen by more people as it only achieved a limited release in 1957 and hasn't been seen a lot since.
