Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
6.4? you're kidding me!
That is way too low of an average for this movie, it is awesome. One of the great 80's movies. It is almost 30 years old and it is still current with so many issues and stereotypes. Bullies, racial tensions, nerds, having sports and athletes rule, revenge,(duh) and personal realization. Sure, pretty fake computer stuff but it was 1984. The thing that makes this movie so great is that it relates to everyone. Okay, maybe not if you're a Klingon, but this movie represents just about every person where they were about this age in life, on either side. The bully or the bullier, the nerd, the anarchist, whoever you were or are still, will be represented here. That's why you will enjoy this movie. The end.
Night Shift (1982)
Almost Perfect
One of my favorite movies of all time with so many great lines I wouldn't even know where to begin. From 'Love brokers' to the driving across the bridge scene, everything flows perfectly through this movie without anything wasted, Ron Howard really pulled it together. Sure it has a dark side but the comedy trumps it. The chemistry between the actors is so good, Shelly Long playing a prostitute was a bit of a stretch but she too was basically kind of nerdy. Short of 'Pretty Woman' most films involving the lives of prostitutes don't end well but this one has a kind, soft finish. There are lots of cameos in the movie, you should IMDb it before watching. Richard Belzer plays a bad dude which is scarily believable. Highly recommended movie that everyone can enjoy.
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008)
Major Letdown!
Like most sequels, this movie was horrible. I was looking forward to it but there is no amount of marijuana on the planet that would make this movie funny. Maybe if you are a 15 year old male (or extremely immature adult) you would find a few laughs but it was obvious these guys were just collecting a paycheck. Disgusting, implausible story lines and even Doogie Howser looked like he was just going through the motions. Note to directors and writers: don't work while you're high, wait until the end of the day. Don't get me wrong, I loved the first movie because it showed their personalities and quirks. The sequel showed their mannerisms exaggerated to the point of being forced and phony. I hope the third in this series has a better script and that the cast and crew make an effort instead of phoning it in.
Hollywood Shuffle (1987)
Simply flawless
One of the best movies I've ever seen. This a movie that makes you think. First you laugh, then you think about why you're laughing and if you should be laughing or crying. There isn't a wasted scene in this movie, each one is relevant and true. I have known about the virtues of this movie since its release, my siblings and I call each other 'hocake' and no one knows what we're talking about. I was amazed that there aren't even photos of the stars and director (Robert Townsend and others) on the cast page of this movie. This is such an under-rated flick, the only movie I can think of offhand that is this poignant and clever is 'A day without a Mexican', another great movie. If you are a simpleton who likes movies to watch things blow up this isn't for you. If you are the cerebral type who actually uses their brain this movie is right up your alley. You'll think about this movie for a while.
What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? (2004)
This movie will change your life!
Without sounding too dramatic, this movie changed my life. It will change the way you think about--everything! Of course most of us are too caught up with our lives, we will just keep doing what we do every day--like it or not. If you see this movie and apply the principles I bet you will have a more rewarding, enriched life. It can and will change your thought patterns and processes--if you let it. I'm letting it. No religion, just science and facts. It's that simple. I wish everyone in the world would see this movie. It shows how we are all connected and how you can change your life by the way you think. It's just that simple! And I've been to the Baghdad theater in Portland where this was filmed, it is a wonderful ornate theatre. They took out every other row of chairs and put in tables--they sell pizza and beer so you can have a brewski and a slice while watching a great flick.
