Telemarketers (2023)
Aggressively Mediocre Vanity Project
I watch a LOT of documentaries - 3 a week. This started off well, but other than decades old video of telemarketers doing heroin & having prostitutes around the office, and the reasons that people were in the job, there was nothing worth 3 hours - maybe a TikTok. It's definitely must-see TV for newborns.
The story was disjointed, they talked about some things that sounded important & never returned to the topic, they repeated other things far more than necessary (I suspect they didn't notice because they are not professionals or because they never watched and edited it as a whole. I felt like I was watching someone's random video journal or strung together, incoherent Facebook posts.
There was no information for anyone who hasn't been in a coma for 20 years. It comes over as some amateur videos that became a vanity project for two men and they tried to make a documentary in order to capitalize on the political climate - BLM, the attempted overthrow of the government, and even working from home. It feels like they made a checklist of the top societal concerns and slapped something together, acted as if there lives were in danger from police because nobody would talk to them (in actuality, they are both prone to heavy drug use and paranoia), as a money-making scheme.
If you make a documentary, I should have learned something at the end. I learned two con men who used to bilk seniors in the name of the police ilked HBO too.
