The Keeping Hours (2017)
Great movie
This is a gem of a movie that I'd never even heard of. The story is well written and definitely an interesting take on the topic. While supernatural in concept, the characters feel very real and relatable, and you can help but feel their pain, sorrow, confusion, love...all the things. The cast is outstanding, Lee Pace and Carrie Coon are both excellent leads. You'll probably want to have tissues nearby because this is a tear-jerker. But even though it's bittersweet, it's also heartfelt and heartwarming. I was glad to see the two main characters find peace after all the sorrow that they had gone through.
Elvis (2022)
Mesmerized
The movie in and if itself is solid, but it is really all about one thing: Austin Butler. His performance as Elvis is truly mesmerizing and captivating. I couldn't take my eyes off him, and totally understood the hysteria surrounding Elvis in a whole new way. (I was a child when he died, so mostly knew about him through my mom.)
The movie spans years of Elvis' life, and I especially enjoyed the childhood flashback to the revival. There was magic in that scene.
I have a whole new appreciation for The King after watching. The costumes are amazing and the cinematography is beautiful. Worth a watch.
Black Widow (2021)
Great action
TBH, I don't understand all the hatorade...I thought this was an enjoyable movie with a lot of great action. I didn't find the movie to be slow at all. You have to suspend belief for any super hero movie, and this is no different. Natasha is a bad @$$, but she still has a heart (thus her sacrifice in Endgame). Plus we all know that 'families', real or contrived, have their own dynamics that bring up lots of baggage. I also enjoyed Rachel Weiss in her role. I find it to be another solid entry in the MCU. The best? No. Entertaining? Absolutely.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Can we talk about how good this movie is???
Sooooo much better than its predecessor in pretty much every way. Much more depth and character development (granted, he had four hours to do it). This movie was very satisfying, and left me hungry for more! I hope we can get more DCU from Zack Snyder in the future, though I realize that's not their current plan... new hashtag #bringbackzack 😄
Resident Alien (2021)
Promising pilot!
If the rest of the season is as good as the pilot, this is a winner. Alan Tudyk was perfect as the title alien in disguise...awkward, stiff, socially inept...yet strangely endearing. His interactions with Asta were heartfelt, and his dance moves made me giggle. The show was LOL funny at several points (when the sheriff and deputy did the beatbox/trumpet of Amazing Grace!! Brilliant and hilarious!), but also had some dark moments. All in all, a very refreshingly different, funny, and promising start!
Bones: The Death of the Queen Bee (2010)
One of my faves
Really enjoyed this episode! So fun to go bsck to Brennan's high school, and the whole slasher flick angle. Robert Englund as the janitor was everything!!! So perfect!!!
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Hilarious
This movie definitely isn't for everyone... but I think it is absolutely hilarious. It has a dry sense of humor, some great performances from an outstanding cast. Definitely a slow burn.
My Spy (2020)
Predictable but with heart
My Spy is a cute, family friendly* flick (*contains some profanity. IMHO, movies geared at a younger crowd should have zero profanity, but I guess I'm old school) Yes, it's predictable and formulaic; nevertheless, it has some laugh out loud moments. Dave Batista and Chloe Coleman have a nice chemistry - she steals every scene, she is absolutely charming and adorable. I really enjoyed it.
End of the World (2013)
Cheesy goodness
While I understand the low ratings of this movie, I think if you watch it in the spirit in which it appears to have been made, it's really a fun movie. End of the World is a tongue-in-cheek homage to pop culture, sci-fi and (of course) disaster movies. The pop culture references alone were fantastic, and the actors are clearly in on the joke, not taking themselves or the cheesy script too seriously. Greg Grunberg is adorable as always. I expected this movie to suck wind, and was pleasantly surprised. If you're a fan of disaster movies and looking for lighthearted escapist fluff, watch this movie & enjoy a few chuckles.
Prodigal Son (2019)
Excellent pilot
I really enjoyed this pilot... Tom Payne did an excellent job as the troubled titular character, and Michael Sheen was completely creepy as his serial killer father. Naturally there's a bit of a 'Silence of the Lambs' vibe given the premise, but the dynamic between the father and son is altogether different. The pilot definitely pulls you in and holds your attention. Really nice to see Lou Diamond Phillips in the cast as well. Interested to see where the show goes!
