Gumnaami (2019)
Gumnaami Review: A well executed dramatization of the Mukherjee Commission
I mostly hate Srijit Mukherjee movies. I think he over does it. However, I will never say nay if otherwise. And here I have my "otherwise".
Gumnaami is by far and wide the better movies by Srijit Mukherjee. He seemed passionate about the subject and raise questions about it. His treatment to the visuals of the conspiracy theories, if we can still call ot as, is well envisioned. This and the investigation and proceedings of the commission go parallely and hand in hand. But there for sure are moments where the dialogues overdoes it.
Srijit over did it with his dialogues any multiple places but then there is the able hand of all the actors involved. Prosenjit Chatterjee is convincing as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, something I had my doubts with. Tanushree Chakraborty does well in her limited engagement. But it is definitely Anirban Bhattacharya who could redeem the cheesiest and cringe-worthy dialogues. At a point he declares himself as the soldier in Azaad Hind Fauj. By the end, no, your not convinced, but know that he is.
A special mention goes to the background score and sound designing. It upholds the essence of what is going on the screen. Though, at only one point the background score hampered the feel of the onscreen visual.
The movie gives a lot of information. But never felt over burdened. But this may not be for watching over a casual meet.
Therefore, as pointed out, it is minorly flawed at the script but rest of it is done with passion, care and love for the freedom fighter we know as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
Jumanji: The Next Level Review - A bit more character and a bit more heart provides for much improvement and variety
There was not much to expect from Jumanji: The Next Level. And frankly there isn't much more happening than the last time. However, it is the kind of treatment they went for this time.
Karen Gillan gets a different character briefly and justifies it. Jack Black too gets a different character than before. But it is the new "old" characters which they added that works smoothly (with "grease"). How they react and try to understand, takes up the majority of the runtime. That helps Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart to showcase and play with their characters. And all this is thought out so well that it is outright hilarious. Sure it was repetitive but writing and enactment is done so well that every time it landed into laughs. Everyone submerged into their respective characters very well.
Action sequences were decent enough to keep you at the edge of your seat. The plot hadn't much but could have delved just a little deeper into two in-game characters than it did, which you'll know if and when you see.
Other than that, it expands slightly more into the world building; you may or may not remember it later but you'll surely enjoy watching it. It definitely is a fun time at the theatre with your friends and/or family.
However the nostalgia element that was till now missing in these reboot/sequel (s) is hinted at the end. So now I am curious to see how they handle the next obvious sequel, given how well they handled the new elements in this movie.
