Laxmii (2020)
Sharad Kelkar beats Akshay Kumar hands down!
This movie is barely a one-time watch. However Sharad Kelkar's acting is the only saving grace in this movie. You actually feel for Laxmi due to Sharad's cameo. This certainly is not comedy or a horror movie for that matter.
Akshay Kumar has done a decent job, nothing extraordinary. Others are just props.
Thackeray (2019)
Brilliant acting..a deserving tribute to great personality!
It is always difficult to put into perspective and set priorities when it comes to a biographical film. It is all the more tougher when it is to be made on someone who has been in the public eye for most of his life i.e. Balasaheb Thackeray in this instance. Questions are 1. What to show? 2. What not to show? 3. How to show? 4. Will this look real or glorified?
To me personally, this movie is an honest attempt to portray the real man and any signs of glorifications are incidental since the personality of the main character Balasaheb has always been larger than life. Now the question is whether you like his politics or not, that is completely a personal choice.
Coming to technical aspects -
Acting - Brilliant. Nawaz is like a flowing water which takes shape of any vessel you put him into. His gestures, dialogue delivery are the heart of this film.
Direction - Great job done.
Screenplay - Life of Balasaheb is very difficult to put in 2 hour long movie. However utmost efforts are done in this department.
Music - Background score is a winner.
Editing - This job was tough since it must have been difficult to prioritise the events in Balasaheb's life. So you can't blame the editor for this.
I think that a Netflix series would do more justice to Balasaheb's character wherein there will be ample scope for detailing and showing the nuances of the whole political game. This movie seemed a bit rushed in the second half, nevertheless it was great to see Nawazuddin potray Balasaheb on big screen.
P.S - Amrita Rao is perfect for role of Minatai. Other actors have given their best too.
Mulk (2018)
One of the best of the year!
This movie has a powerful message, however the best part is it doesn't engage itself into usual rhetorics. Movie has a realistic touch as to how society brands some people as terrorists based on their religion and the way they represent their religion. The prejudice is shown realistically as well.
The best thing about this movie is that true definition of terrorism is explained in a beautiful way.
Technically - Direction, editing, background score and acting are one of the best elements of the movie.
Special mention to Rishi Kapoor - He gives a power-packed but controlled performance, arguably one of his best, of his career. Thank you sir for your contribution. Cheers!
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018)
Sincere apologies to the makers on behalf of Indian audience!
Indian audience is crazy about Marvel and DC movies and that shows in Box office numbers..and we often have this habit of saying, 'When will Bollywood come up with such quality?'
And when we are presented with this masterpiece, we choose Veere di Wedding over Bhavesh Joshi! Indian audience don't deserve Bhavesh Joshi. As the phrase from Batman goes..he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. Hence, as the caption goes, I apologise to the makers of this movie that we as audience are not mature enough to understand this masterpiece.
Special comments regarding Harshvardhan - dude, keep it up. Please don't get into commercial crappy stuff that other actors are pulling off! Hope you read this.
Comments for makers - It would be great to see Bhavesh Joshi as web series!
Cheers!
Ani... Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar (2018)
Will be remembered for extraordinary acting!
This movie is going to remembered for some great acting, great direction and sheer nostalgia!
Assets of the movie:
1. Acting - All actors have performed exceptionally well. Subodh Bhave stands out and gives potentially award winning performance
2. Direction - Excellent! Director was able to get the best expressions from his actors and scores well
3. 60s and 70s look - Spot on..although I am 90s child..I enjoyed the overall look of the movie
Some points which I expected to be better (personal opinion - doesn't make this a bad movie at all) -
1. Editing - Movie is a bit drag in some parts and sometimes incoherent..too many things are tried to be shown in 1 movie
2. Story - Director should've decided which part of his life was to be focussed for audience..his relationship with father? his relationship with wives? his career? his self-destructive behaviour? his rivalry with his contemporaries? too many things at the same time takes away the seriousness of the whole journey
Overall, this movie is a must watch for people who love great acting and want to witness a bunch of people giving excellent performances.
P.S - Sumit Raghavan was brilliant as Dr. Shreeram Lagoo.
Searching (2018)
Taut new age thriller! Unconventional!
Landed upon this by chance and I am so glad I did. Relatively unknown makers and actors..however wonderful job done. This movie shows how today's world works..everything is online! A fast paced thriller with emotional elements in abundance, this is one of the finest movies this year for sure.
Special mention of the background score, it lifts the already great movie up even more.
Highly recommended for genre fans!
The Machinist (2004)
A true psychological thriller!
When I first saw this movie some years back, I was most impressed with Christian Bale's transformation/weight loss. People usually refer to this movie by saying..'Oh! the movie in which Christian Bale shed his weight only to gain for Batman Begins' - in a nutshell this movie has become a stopover for guys who want to see Bale in each oh his body transformation feats. And no doubt, calling Bale's efforts commendable would be an understatement. However, this very thing overpowers the movie in itself! What I mean is, less people talk about the actual movie and just remember the weight loss part! That's sheer injustice to the overall movie, which is actually one of the best psychological thrillers of 21st century.
This movie is one of the greatest examples of pure, unadulterated, non-commercial movie-making. Direction, acting, editing is way ahead of its time. The setting is still relevant in 2018 and doesn't lose its charm with time.
I hope this movie gets its due appreciation!
The Super (2017)
This one caught me off guard! Val Kilmer is brilliant!
Writing about the movie, it starts off as a usual horror flick. There seems to be no connection of the lead characters and the events unfolding; it is almost happening parallel. Right until last 15 minutes I was wondering as to what was really up! This is a solid movie for horror-thriller movie fans.
Now coming to old Val Kilmer - he has outperformed himself in this one. His role is an extended cameo sorts, but I am writing this review just to share how brilliant he was in his role. He should definitely do more experimental roles like this one. If he is reading this, welcome back Val..keep up the good work! Hoping to see your best in Top Gun sequel.
Sanju (2018)
What's the take away? Ghee chhe to ghapa ghap?
Disclaimer - I have nothing against Sanjay Dutt. Like every individual on this planet, this guy had 99 problems. Oh! but getting girls was not 1 of 'em for sure! Good for him.
Bollywood has come to cross roads where 80% of the films are utter rubbish. Thankfully, this movie stands somewhere in other 20% of the pie. However, it is really surprising that every celebrity is trying to get a clean chit from public by making such semi/quasi-biographical films. Azhar, Haseena Parker and now Sanju.
Talking about Sanju, great direction, great acting, ok songs and lousy editing (movie could've been at least 20 minutes shorter). So as a movie watching experience - it was quite fun and we really feel for the poor guy during some scenes. Now coming to the real issue.
What's the take away from this movie? Did we get to learn anything substantial? Was this true biography of the actor? Was this some kind of perspective which director wanted us to have when we think of Sanju? The whole narrative seems to be confused and confusing. May be the whole point was - Don't be like Sanju. Agreed! However, as an audience I've had enough of people playing victims in so called biographies to...probably gain sympathy of people?
Overall - Movie wins in almost all technical aspects, but loses on the objective of being a biographical film.
Mandy (2018)
This one gave me Migraine (I like Nic Cage)
I have been a huge Nic Cage fan. Whenever some new movie of his pops up, I religiously go through the ordeal without bothering about the ratings and his movies are usually enjoyable, although are not to be taken much seriously. However, it was different about 'Mandy'. This movie was much hyped and was somewhat treated as a grand comeback for the once sought after star who has 1 Oscar win in his downward spiralling career.
And given the hype or not, I was disappointed with this film. Lets tackle 1 thing at a time: Story.- Its a simple revenge story, nothing wrong with that isn't it? Or is it? We have 100 such movies made on somewhat similar lines..so nothing innovative with this.
Music - This part literally gave me Migraine. End of story.
Direction - Using Red colour, close shots of ageing actors for 5-7 minutes at a stretch for no reason doesn't make you a revolutionary Director.
Acting - Nic Cage shines in some parts of the movie. But think, he had much more scope in 'The Humanity Bureau', 'Mom and Dad', and 'The Runner'
More than anything, I found surprisingly highly rated reviews on IMDb for this film. It was a matter of concern to me. To those claiming this as innovative, it isn't. Revolutionary - No.
All in all, It is time to realise that different is not always great and IMDb reviews are not always fair..
