Jimmy Carr: His Dark Material (2021 TV Special)
5/10
Occasionally good, a bit disappointing
3 January 2022
I very much enjoy Jimmy Carr when he is personable, e.g. In his tv-shows (and his new game show is really fun, check it out!), but it seems specials changes his humor too much for me to enjoy. Let me explain.

I think Jimmy does his best humor when he stands face to face with people in his game shows. In that space it feels like he is close enough to the people he is joking about that he hits the right level of 'making fun of' and 'laughing with'. In this special it is clear that he is too distanced from the people he makes fun of and too shallow to hit the depth of the material required for a 'dark joke' to land well: It makes his jokes feel superficial (and because of that, more mean-spirited than 'lets' joke away the pain').

Another issue with Jimmy's material being this detached from his targets is that when he goes for personal insults he falls back on stereotypes and social norm. E.g. Women who have multiple partners = bad (the numerous 'large vagina' jokes), or when he deals with heckler Charlie, he doesn't 'make fun of' Charlie, he makes fun of his mother. The best way to insult a man is to insult the women in his life? Where have I heard that six million comedians later... There was also some cringy material this time around, like slagging off vegans, makes him seem old and out of touch to be honest.

Finally, his interesting opening line, to avoid spoilers, something to the effect of 'raping someone isn't the same as joking about rape'. Ok, but joking about rape isn't non-harmful. What makes it worse is that he clearly shows some understanding for that later in his show when it comes to racial jokes he makes, how is he oblivious to it when it comes to gender?

Perspective taking at its best.
3 February 2015
This movie will get a rating depending on maturity and interest in perspective-taking, relationships, how relationships are mediated and what part the internet plays in moderating our relationships.

A few reviewers of this movie have read the book, I have not. Not having read the book, I don't see the gaps that they point out. (Reading through their reviews however makes me want to read it.)

Another set of reviewers interpret this movie in a far too simple manner. They say the internet causes this and that, and (in agreement with one other reviewer), I disagree with them.

I agree with this one other reviewer that also picked up on this; nothing happening in the movie is new _because of_ the internet age. Miscarriage, cheating, sexual frustration, etc., have always existed.

This movie is however an excellent showcase of dysfunctional (and some functional) relationships and how people deal with those dysfunctions differently. It is frighteningly realistic, in every aspect it brings forward.

If you want to watch a movie to gain the perspective of man, woman and child, this is it. It presents its content in a judgment free manner, left up to us to decide what we agree with or would do instead. It is a contemporary description of the realities we live in, with our own problems, our own solutions and our own shortcomings. Excellent.

Very refreshing and enjoyable.

Where to begin? I have read all Discworld books and am eagerly anticipating the book coming out this year. I also caught Hogfather which is equally as magical as this one.

Obviously characters and places are not what they were in your mind when reading the books, but reviewing this movie based on the books would be wrong (although I did miss all the subtle jokes the books push).

The Colour of Magic is a very good movie, no doubt about it and the plot is very refreshing compared to the age old fantasy genre where it is always good against bad, blah blah blah. Here we have a protagonist who is a bit of a coward, irritable and useless at his profession and very unwillingly pushes the plot forward. As with the books, Terry Pratchett is a true original when it comes to character personalities and plots, at the same time he pulls of introducing a completely new world where things often enough exactly are they way they seem.

Read Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, they are completely amazing.

Feel-good and witty!
28 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This movie takes us on a journey with a British family enticed by the communistic East Germany. Although the movie is rather light-hearted and witty, if you look through the obvious irony to the subtle humoristic usages of language (such as The League of Friends, but I won't mention more for anti spoiler-warning purposes), it is a revealing look into how people in different ages with different dispositions could have reacted to the communist pressures.

One of these is the youngest daughters course of action through the movie, where her character is the only one that would plausibly behave in the way she did. The same goes for the other characters, as well as several very funny moments and twists that I unfortunately cannot go further into here. If you follow each character throughout this movie, you will find an amazing ability in the director to be able to intertwine personal relationships realistically with the plot. Have in mind the director is not using huge names, nor is on a huge budget.

What I enjoyed the most with this movie was that although the main theme is East Germany communism, the personal relationships and their course throughout the movie follows realistically and purposefully throughout the movie together with the plot, an amazing feat, but one thing made me lower my vote from 10/10 to 8/10. To collect the last loose ends together, a wee bit of magical thinking and a forgive-and-forget attitude ties them neatly, although humoristically, together.

Very well acted and great integration of multiple plots.

If you are looking for a Hollywood movie, you can look elsewhere. This movie is a portrait/musical/drama with several plots moving through the movie at the same time (and successfully, very pleasant to watch!). Actors should be credited with an overall very good performance.

If you enjoy fairytale/musical/Mozartian entertainment, this is a movie for you! I'm giving it a 6 because, although it was entertaining it was a little dragged out at some places. Also, it seems like it is targeted for a wee bit younger audience as it could easily pass as a children's movie. The graphics weren't very impressing either, but considering their budget/setting they made what they could with it and did it well.
