Stöld (2024)
Thrilling tale about the life of the Sámi
While this movie is far from perfect it tells a thrilling story about the racism and prejudice that the Sámi face in their everyday lives. The cinematography is beautiful and the acting is stellar, especially by the protagonist. Since it is based on a book, it can perhaps be forgiven about falling into the same tropes about the Sámi being so close connected to their reindeer (it feels as if every movie makes sure to point out how important the reindeer herding is to the population even though far from every Sámi does this for a living).
The plot was decent and I can understand the frustration that the Sámi must feel since acts of violence towards them and their livestock is far from fictional. A few characters were underdeveloped and didn't add all that much to the story, which made the movie feel disjointed at times.
Overall it is worth the watch and tells an important story.
Mirakel (2020)
A really great story
After having stopped watching SVT's Christmas calendars in my teens for believing them to be childish I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that this one existed. It is a very mature story that tackles complex issues about life and how the grass might seem greener on the other side. Since it is a story for the entire family it is understandable that there weren't too many risks taken, but it was executed very well.
As a fan of body swaps in general I found that the acting was done very well by the two protagonists, especially by Lenhoff.
There were some minor plot issues, especially the writing in the shed since it would have already been there to begin with and not appear when it did. Still those are minor things that don't derail the story.
I'm with Me (2023)
A fun gender bender body swap
While this movie doesn't add anything new to the genre of gender benders or body swaps it is decently executed. I got a few good laughs out of it, but it was a slow start that could have been executed better. It's the standard of walking a mile in someone else's shoes and this movie doesn't subvert the tried formula. It might have benefited more from being a bit more daring and trying something new rather than to stick with the same old. Some good acting, especially by the secretary. Standard and a bit generic ending, but it still made me smile that the pair just decided to give their problem to a completely random pair. It's worth watching if you are a fan of the genre, if not I won't say that you'll miss anything.
Socorro, Virei uma Garota! (2019)
Nothing new to the genre
Guy wishes to be popular, becomes a popular girl and gets to relive a week or so of her life and learns that being popular isn't all that it's cracked up to be and then becomes a guy again after some drama.
It's been done so many times with body swap movies and other such films and nothing new comes from it.
Have the guy stay a girl or do it with a girl becoming a guy to add something new.
Just Charlie (2017)
One of the best transgender representations ever on film
What this film may lack in budget it certainly makes up for in heart. Superb acting from everyone involved, especially from the actor playing Charlie.
The movie starts during a period that is sensitive to all transgender children and captures Charlie's troubles with her changing body and restricting choices very well. Charlie is unique for a transgender girl in a movie in that she still likes to do "boyish" things.
It is a must see for most people since it provides much needed education in this matter.
The Swap (2015)
Generic Gender Bender Body Swap
As someone that has seen pretty much every gender bender movie out there I have to say that this movie really does not add anything new to the topics of gender bending or body swapping.
The movie starts out simply with two pretty standard teenagers of opposite sexes. Both are involved in sports that are typical for their gender and both excel at it. The problem that is introduced is that both basically have only one parent each and both are troubled with both the parent that is gone and the parent that is left. The male character gets little love and is constantly pushed by his father while the female character is in the opposite situation.
One day in school their distress about their situation reaches a point where they both wish that they were the other. Thanks to the magic of texting by phone (which both are totems from the parent they've lost) both get their wish fulfilled and swaps bodies.
What follows is a few days of walking on the other side of the fence for both gender benders. They are exposed to a few stereotypical clichés such as TV-games and beauty salons. At the same time there is a time limit to swap back before they are stuck as each other for life. With all this going on there is a typical big game for both that they have to excel at.
After they have both started to solve each others problems and being triumphant at their respective big game the two, with less than 45 minutes to go, wish to be themselves again but are still stuck.
What follows is some insane time dilation where both teenagers have time to shower, get dressed, go home, have a heartbreaking moment with their new parent and both meet up at a bridge far away from where they live and finally return to being themselves.
The filmmakers missed a big opportunity to add something new to this genre by not letting them remain swapped by throwing in some dues ex machina at the last minute.
For a person interested in movies like this one there are better alternatives such as Dating The Enemy and It's A Boy Girl Thing.
Mein Sohn Helen (2015)
Promising movie that fails at the finish line
This movie had a lot of potential. The actors were very good and Helen made a convincing female, which many movies about transgendered people do not have. The issue here was the far too thin plot. It stretched the same issues for transgendered people to when they were no longer believable. The main plot that Finn goes away to California and one year later Helen returns is played decently, the problem is that nobody seems to talk with anyone until it's already been done. From her father's initial reaction it's understandable that Helen and her mother sneaked behind his back for almost nine years before telling him, what's not understandable is that Helen just assumes that coming home dressed the way she is will cause issues that could have been avoided. Had she eased her father and the school into this step-by-step instead of just coming out and expect everyone to treat her as every other girl then she wouldn't have been abused the way she had and she would have saved a lot of mental anxiety. I understand that Helen, in her naiveté, hopes for everyone to see her as she wants to be seen but that's not how the world works. The actor playing re-closeted Finn does a splendid job of portraying the real emotions and anxiety that a transgendered person feel at such a moment and is the big plus of this film. The big minus comes from the over-sugared ending where everything just solves itself during a dull one year flash-forward. Everyone who initially rejected Helen are now super-positive about her and everyone is so happy about it. Had the director wanted to keep this movie realistic then they should at least have some people who are so conservative that they wouldn't ever accept her for who she was. So the movie was enjoyable and realistic at times while it still lacked that real realism, which would have made this movie fantastic.
Becker: He Said, She Said (1999)
Actually pretty insightful and interesting
Considering that Becker is a comedy you are bound for the standard jokes about transgender people when they have a transgender character in an episode. The episode revolves about a friend, Nikki, from Becker's past whom he hasn't seen for twenty years tells him that she's coming to visit him. The thing is that she is a trans-woman and Becker doesn't know about this. To stay in stealth she tells him that she's a friend of his old friend and she's just in town for a while and wants to talk about Becker and his old friend(herself). Becker finds out that he enjoys spending time with her and that she is one of few who actually get along with him very well and he feels a slight attraction towards her. Meanwhile Nikki comes out to Linda, who promises to keep it a secret. The two then head away to attend a sporting event and return to Becker's apartment together that night. They both sit down on the sofa and Becker makes a move on Nikki, who decides it's time to tell Becker the truth. Becker's reaction is a typical "trans-panic" reaction without any violence, he just feels a bit surprised and grossed out having just realized that the woman he was attracted to was an old friend from his childhood. He throws her out of his apartment and Nikki appears to have been a bit hurt by Becker's reaction. The next day Linda comes to Becker and tells him what Nikki told her, to which he replies that he already knows. He expresses disgust for having been attracted to a "guy" and makes some ill-fit comments about her. Linda tells him that Nikki is accepting of who he is and asks why he can't be the same for Nikki. He agrees to go talk to her and keep calm. When he arrives at her hotel room he bursts into the room and angrily asks why she just couldn't settle with being gay. She tells him that it's not the same thing. He replies with asking her if she understands how confusing this situation is for him. Then Nikki drops the absolutely most insightful and relevant line possible: "Imagine what it was like for an eight-grader". Becker then realizes that she has always had these feelings and approaches her with acceptance. He asks her if he should feel weird with having been attracted to her and she says that it's not weird and that he can see it as having been attracted to an old friend. The two then embrace each other for a handshake but Nikki decides to hug him instead, which marks the end of the episode.
Despite the half-funny remarks about him dating "a dude" and the incorrect terms used by the cast concerning Nikki's transsexuality and SRS the episode is insightful and shows acceptance towards the transgender community. Both Linda and Becker shows acceptance and think she did the right thing since she is much happier as a woman than she could ever be as a man. And the actress playing Nikki does an outstanding job here. The bad part about this episode was the boring part with Regina and Margaret which was completely unnecessary and horribly acted.

Frozen (2013)
A huge waste of potential
This movie started out in a great way, mysticism and tension were great in the beginning. Elsa is an interesting character with a certain aura and personality that actually made me believe that this movie was going to be one of the better animated movies ever. The whole build-up is interesting and the music is top notch. And just as you reach the climax everything just turns cliché. Hans, the prince that asked Anna to marry him 12 hours ago turns out to be evil and just said the things he did so he would get a shot at the throne. The whole curse that was put on Anna is just a bunch of Mumbo-Jumbo since one little hug, and a few tears, from Elsa just thaws her up again. And Kristoff that rold Anna that you can't just fall in love after a single day does just that and falls in love with Anna. The trolls could have been so much more important to the plot, but instead they just acted as some marriage-crazy singers. If the movie had continued what it started in the first 60 minutes I would have rated it at least 9. But since this was just a really crappy ending that was so standard for every Disney-movie, I just couldn't stand it. 6/10
How I Met Your Mother: Bass Player Wanted (2013)
Half-funny, but not great
Since this season hasn't lived up to any of our expectations yet, it's been very slow and sometimes plain boring. This episode is clearly not one of the better episodes of the series, but not the worst either. Some parts are actually touching, Barneys and Teds conversation about what you would do for your best friend is really good. But many things were boring. For example Darren takes way too much room in this episode and just becomes annoying as the episode progresses. Linus is as unfunny as usual, the whole discussion about who's rooting for who is silly. It was a bit sad that after 13 episodes we still hadn't seen more than about 10 minutes of the mother. But this episode at least gives us some of her, and a bit of information about her as a person. And the best part is that everybody has arrived to the hotel, including the mother. So I believe that we will see more of her in the following episodes. So while there are some laughs and touching moments in this episode, it won't be remembered by me as something renewing, but since it seems that we've hit a turning point now I can't dismiss it either. 6/10
How I Met Your Mother: Knight Vision (2013)
Finally season 9 delivers!
The beginning of season nine hasn't, in my opinion, been very great. The story has been slow and the jokes haven't been that funny. But this episode is easily one of the ten best episodes of the entire series. The plot is great and the Indiana Jones-reference is spot on. The way Robin and Barney lie to the minister about how they met, using Marhalls and Lilys very romantic story, is just hilarious. Ted is as always insecure about how he should act and ends up making really bad decisions all night. But since this leads to him meeting the mother at Farhampton it is totally worth it. The only thing that wasn't funny was how the girl Ted ended up with in this episode faked her crying and wasn't convincing at all.
Also the wedding at Barney's scene was just awesome.
