Tomato Red (2017)
Not a fluffy film
If you're into action films, this is not for you. If you're into thoughtful films and willing to meet the characters where they are at in their reality, and you're open to the fact that this represents a plight that many humans are born into, then this is worthy of your time. You really can't go too far wrong when Julia Garner or Anna Friel decide a fim is worth participating in.
My biggest problem with the film is not in the actors, the characters, the writing, or the cinematography. It's that since I was raised in the Ozark and have lived in California, I know that the mountains in the background look more like the Central Valley of California than they will ever resemble the Ozarks. They may have gotten away with it if it weren't for the wide shots, but it also looks too dry. The reality is that this film was shot in Canada. I wish the scouts would have researched the terrain and geography of the Ozarks better because if you're going to say a film is based in Missouri, in the United States and it's a major component to the plot, then it visually needs to be believable. The mountains in the background completely took me out of the film. At least Julia moved on to the acclaimed TV series "Ozark" where even though it's not shot in the Ozarks, it sure as heck looks like it because of all the location research they did to ensure it has an authentic look and feel for sense of place.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Re: Negative Reviews "There's nothing in the book that hasn't already happened'.
For anyone reading negative reviews which are by majority, people who "don't think these things could happen". Note this fact as stated by Margaret Atwood, the author of the original book, "The Handmaid's Tale" says in an interview, "There's nothing in the book that hasn't already happened (in real life history)."
Anyone who can't watch or won't watch because they think it's too far fetched is living in ignorance of the history of what human beings have done (and are currently doing) to other human beings around the world for centuries. If you think anything depicted in this series is inhumane, you're right. Which is why we need to stand up for those who are unable to stand up for themselves if they are being oppressed.
The Space Between Us (2017)
Engaging, Charming, Thoughtful, Easy to Watch
I was looking for something not too dark or too serious, not action packed... just easy with character development. I read the negative reviews and was prepared for it to be bad, but it was surprisingly engaging. The actors all do a great job, especially the two main characters.
Asa Butterfield who plays Gardner Elliot, and Britt Robertson who plays Tulsa were excellent hidden gems in this film. Britt is dynamic and a joy to watch in this role.
I also very much appreciated that women were well represented as natural equals to men throughout the film. Strong, independent women throughout a film in the way they were portrayed in this film, is rare to see. Refreshing.
For all those nit-picking about astronomical logic, I hated "The Martian". Anyone who believes Matt Damon's character was the "best botanist" doesn't know the definition. Apparently neither did the writers of that film.
That said, I had a willing suspension of disbelief quite easily for this "The Space Between Us". Give it 15 minutes and see what you think... I'd be happy to watch it again.
Barbecue (2017)
Skim if you wish
I'm usually pretty forgiving, but this was slow. Seems like a lot of work to travel and get interviews that were really not that interesting or insightful. Yes, there is commonality for this type of method around the world, we get that, that's why we wanted to see it. There is very little about the ingredients, how they were raised, or seasonings or methods. It's all very generic. Even the colors are muted.
Too matter of fact, too dry, little passion. The acts almost seem mundane, which it probably is for those who do it every day for decades, but it's the job of the director to entice a glimmer in the eye of those being interviewed. Understated would be an understatement. A couple of times there were glimpses of interesting technique but then it would cut away so you couldn't see what was going on.
There also doesn't seem to be any story here... just bits and pieces of things commentary that is rarely engaging. I can't help but think had this been in different hands, it would have been a far more interesting documentary that I might remember later.
I have to agree with the previous reviewer, not craving barbecue and I should be. The trailer is better than the film.
