Fury (2014)
"a masterpiece"
this is the war movie to end all war movies! brad pitt is a genius. imagine how hard it was for these actors to be the battle hardened soldiers they were in this close-knit film! they have been together since the beginning of ww11! the story line! the music! the battle sequences. the battle sequences broken by close contact with civilians, only to be ripped back into battle! this film is a masterpiece-its actions take place among 5 men in a tank called "fury"! this film needs to be put right next to "saving private ryan" as one of the finest war movies ever made!! hands down! the battle scenes! the story plot! the realism of the horrors of war! the scenery. the special effects! even the music in this movie is equal to "saving private ryan"! i wish i could give everyone involved in this movie an Oscar! and, an Oscar to the director, and, the producer, brad pitt! this movie is so real, i felt as if i was actually a crew member of the tank "fury"! it is that real! i am still shaking from watching this fine, fine film!
The Expendables 3 (2014)
"real men having fun and executing justice"!
i have seen all of "The Expendables" and this is as good as it gets! real men executing justice! when the local law enforcement agencies are turning into "pansies", when real men in America are being relegated by silly, insane rules, to being less than males, we see real men doing justice! hats off to Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, and the rest of these fine actors. acting is not an easy job, people! and, the special effects! i could not believe my eyes! what good acting! what stunts! what directing! what a story line. all the story lines in these movies have been believable. to see Sylvester Stallone still out there at his age tearing things apart, doing justice, is very heart warming. it makes me glad to be an American. this one man has done more for patriotism than any one man i know!! starting with the first "rocky" movie back in 1975. he portrays real men! men of extreme fortitude. strength of character. hats off to a powerful movie! this is an Oscar movie if ever there was one!
The Theory of Everything (2014)
" a masterpiece of film-making"!
what a beautiful, wonderful movie! Eddie Redmayne was true to life as astrophysicist Sir Stephen Hawking!filmed in England! Cambridge University. the sounds! the scenery! i am English, and, proud of every drop of English blood that flows through my veins! what this gentle, kind, man has achieved with his life is almost beyond belief! what courage! what character! what fortitude! i become very, very afraid when i even think about something happening to my nervous system! terrified! look what he achieved! gave new life to the study of the entire universe! revelations as genuine as Einstein's! and, married three times! what a man! what a marvelous, glorious, stupendous human being!! and, he has 3 beautiful, normal children to boot? i even saw Sir Stephen Hawking in a weightless chamber spreading his arms and legs like he was floating in outer space! what an inspiration to the rest of us lesser mortals for years to come! what an inspiration to me! i admire him! i like him! this movie is true to life. it portrays the facts of astrophysicist Sir Stephen Hawking down to the smallest detail! how in the world actor Eddie Redmayne achieved the mannerisms, contortions in a wheel chair, facial expressions, voice, everything, i will never know. he must be a genius himself! Oscars all around!
Snitch (2013)
"true to life"!
Dwaynne Johnson is doing a lot of good for the public in general in making this true story movie! he's a very good actor. years ago, me and my family got out of our car at Wendy's restaurant on poplar ave. here in Memphis. on the weekend. up pulled an old car filled with big men. they were wrestlers. they were all polite, kind, friendly. never, ever threw their weight around. i was very, very impressed! so was my whole family. we liked them. i was in line at the Germantown Kroger several years ago, and, the wrestler Jerry Lawler was ahead of me. he was a gentleman. kind. easy going. i learned a lot from this movie that i did not know about the drug laws. every teenager in America needs to see this movie. every parent of children in America needs to see this movie. lawman Buford Pusser was a wrestler before he became a sheriff in Mcnairy county Tennessee years ago. remember him? he had strength of character! i always liked Dwaynne Johnson as a wrestler back in the 1990's! "i've always enjoyed, admired, and stood in utter amazement with people in the entertainment industry. movie stars. singers. actors. actresses.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
"absolute masterpiece"!!
i am Robert dean. Memphis, Tenn. i have loved movies ever since i was a child. i have known through their reviews most of the film critics in America. i did not see the movie "the grand Budapest hotel" when it came out in the theaters. i am a 4 time cancer, 2 time brain surgery patient! i am very grateful to be alive. however, i now have another endocrine neck tumor that may kill me. this takes precedence. however, i love good comedy, and comedians (comediennes). i had seen "the grand hotel Budapest" listed on Redbox's menu. robin Williams' death almost finished me! i was incapacitated mentally and physically for some time. however, i started watching the movie today. a masterpiece! this may be the finest, best made, best acted, best story, best scenery, everything, i have ever seen in my entire long life! to top it off, i was thrilled, as the reels ran, to see my favorite actors! what names! they are all here! Murray Abraham. Ralph Fiennes. i don't want to spoil anything, so, i am simply going to watch it again. i do not want to know the director, and, other boring details. that would be similar to me asking Rembrandt van Rijn who were the characters in his painting "the Nightwatch"!! this is, in my opinion, one of the finest, if not the finest, movie ever made!
A Fighting Man (2014)
"a masterpiece"!
i just saw actor dominic purcell in the movie "a fighting man"! give an academy award to him, the other actors, the producer, the director, the man who wrote the script! i saw all of the "rocky" movies. every one. this is more true to life.a child sees his father brutally hit his mother. then, the father knocks him against the window of the car, and cracks it. the child vows to his mother to never get knocked down right then and there! and, "sailor", played by dominic purcell, is not knocked down, even in his last, his sixty-fourth, fight. his mother raises him herself. the father has run off, abandoning the both of them. my father did the same thing.i see myself in "sailor". this is a prizefighters movie. this is not some "pink and white idiot's" movie about what it must be to be a prizefighter. this is a movie in which the entire cast spills their guts out! purcell was born in england, but, raised in Australia. Australia is a man's world. how many innocent men and women were sent to "new south wales" as convicts years ago? the raw seething beneath the skin for past injustices done to his people comes to life in dominic purcell. bravo! to everyone involved! a masterpiece!
Hummingbird (2013)
another masterpiece!
jason stratham as joey was excellent in this movie. i am a war buff-all wars, any war! i had to see this movie tonight, even though i did not have my glasses on, and, could barely see the title late at night, all i had to see were the words "afghanistan", and, veteran. i knew i had to see this movie. these two wars-iraq, and, afghanistan, are wreaking havoc with our young men! they are coming back just like we came back from Vietnam- fighting an enemy that is your friend one day, and, your enemy the next day. mis-understood wars-in which the objective is unclear. long, drawn- out, tedious, drug ridden in order to keep your sanity over there, and, here, when you get home. when you get home, you cannot adjust-you are still in Vietnam, iraq, and, afghanistan!
Papillon (1973)
"a masterpiece"!
i saw this movie when it first came out, with my girlfriend, with whom i lived for 4 years, and, who brought me the most happiness. i was transfixed! i had read about henri charriere before i saw this movie, i think. i listened to some of the movie's songs on the radio of my little vw beetle. but, to see the brutality, the insanity, the suffering, of this innocent young man! papillon was innocent. he was only 23 when he was convicted of murdering a pimp, in France. he had his whole life ahead of him, and, sentenced to a lifetime, yes, a lifetime, of hard labor on devil's island. devil's island was a french penal colony, finally closed down in 1945. henri charriere, of course, escaped devil's island, the only one, to my knowledge. he spent his life after escaping, in south America. one day, at a store, he happened to read of a female inmate of devil's island, who had just died. he went and got pencils, legal pads, and, sat down, and, wrote his story. it was accepted for publication right away. the tragedy is that charriere died only a few years after writing "papillon". of a heart attack. i cannot believe this movie did not win any Oscars! i have seen it 2-3 times since. great story! great acting!
Giant (1956)
"james dean was truly, truly a genius"!
i am robert dean. i saw the movie "giant" when it first came out when i was just a boy of 10 years old. james dean impressed me greatly even back then, when i was just a boy. to see him as a middle-aged man, dressed to the nines, with beautiful grey leather gloves on, gripped me back then. i do not know if i have seen the movie since. i grasped it's essence even back then. his death from an auto crash tore me up. it was too surreal. this is now june, 2014, i saw the movie "giant", again. from an old man's eyes, one who has suffered as much as i have suffered in this world. i cried! i question God every day of my life now, why He creates such beautiful human beings as james dean certainly was, and, let's them die horribly in an auto wreck! i have just checked out 5-8 books recently, all on james dean. so many, many photos! he studied ballet! ballet! he played baseball as a boy, as i did. only difference: i grew up in the city. james grew up on a farm. i am writing this review for the world to know that i think, based on what i have recently seen, that james byron dean was a genius! a real genius! he was the real thing, people. no pretense. bravo, for the director, george stevens, who saw something in james dean, and, allowed him to star in the movie "giant". as we see james dean age, on screen in this, his last, movie, we see true genius.
300 (2006)
"an absolute masterpiece"!
i went to see this movie when it came out. i was spell-bound from the beginning. the characters, the casting, the music, the colors, the cinematography, and, most importantly, the story. 300 spartans defending their nation against xerxes!!this is one of my favorite movies. it is so very, very well made! i want this movie for my private collection. i have had many, many health problems. when i am down and out, and, feeling sorry for myself, i want to watch the movie "300" all over again!!the greatest geniuses in our day and age will end up, being recorded, history-wise, being the directors, producers, writers, and actors, in movies such as this one! these movies, just such as this one, "300", are, in my opinion, just as great as paintings such as any van gogh, monet, or, rembrandt painted!
The Aviator (2004)
"beautiful movie"!
leonardo di'caprio has done it again! he has found his "niche" playing, and portraying, powerful, eccentric, men! he does a fine, fine job doing this, too! i had no idea howard hughes was a true genius. i did not know this. this movie is beautiful to watch, pleasing on the eyes, the ears, the senses, and, the mind. howard hughes neurosis with regard to germs, etc., reminds me of myself, and, my father! good to see i am in such famous company! showing the neuroses so well of a giant of a human being takes the utmost skill! scorsese has the intellect, and, the good taste, and, skills, to do this to perfection. i doubt if anyone but him could have done this. i will deeply, deeply miss scorsese when he has gone! he has fulfilled the "great American dream"! we are so fortunate, in our lifetime, to have such men as scorsese, eastwood, spielberg, etc.!! they have brought so much joy, and happiness, to my life!
Pompeii (2014)
"the most beautiful movie i have ever seen!"
if i were head of the academy awards, i would give this magnificent movie an academy award for music, casting, everything on the books! this is the finest, most fascinating, most beautiful movie i have seen in my long, long lifetime! how did they do it? talk about "special effects"! the eruption of the volcano that destroyed pompeii is an historical fact. but, the smoke, the noise, the fires, the ground caving in, the tidal wave caused by it, the entire earth underneath this city caving in!these people who made this movie should not only get all of the academy awards, but, go down in history for making the most technically perfect, beautiful, breath-taking, action-filled, movie ever made!! hands down! i am so glad i saw this movie tonight! i got chill bumps seeing the volcano erupt over and over! and, the beautiful music, and cinematography! magnifico!! this movie has to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, movie ever made!
Jobs (2013)
" a masterpiece of film-making"!
i had been waiting for the movie "jobs" to come to the theaters. i missed out. however, i rented it today. i was riveted to my chair, and, pulled my chair closer to the television, to not miss one single detail! ashton kutcher is jobs! hands down! this is genius in acting at its best. when the actor becomes the character. i am appalled at the reviews i had seen, or heard. this is a beautiful movie. for those of us trained in computers, computer language, and, know what jobs did, we are all deeply indebted to this fine, fine man. i am a cancer survivor. i have had cancer twice in my lifetime! jobs got cancer. would he be alive today if he had gone to the world's finest oncologists? we do not know. i do know this: i am indebted to this fine human being. whenever i see a person using his or her iphone, i think of thin, sick, steve jobs, coming out on the stage to say he had something new. he did! indeed! i was just talking to people in church today, asking the question of why geniuses, like steve jobs, suffer so much in this world? none of us had an answer. we all enjoy what they created. i do know this-i appreciate steve jobs even more after seeing this fine, fine movie. good work to all!
All Is Lost (2013)
"a masterpiece! gripped me from the beginning"!
boom! out of nowhere! this film is a masterpiece! redford is an "actor's actor"! booh! on these idiots who gave robert redford a bad review! the height of genius is to be able to act without a thing being said. everyone knows this, or, should know it. this film is the reality of life. disaster out of nowhere. it gripped me from the "boom" in the first reel! i have been where redford is from my own experiences in this life. if you have not, you are nothing, you have been nowhere, and, you don't even have the right to comment! get a life, people! the reality, the persistence, in the face of doom, the small details. the not knowing what will happen from one scene to the next. this is craftsmanship! labelled as "good looking", which he most certainly is, by Hollywood, and, given roles that majored only on this, did not hamper this fine actor in the least. these men and women, male and female, are "the chroniclers of our time", as Shakespeare most famously said. you try doing what redford just did, at the age of 77, when most, if not all, men and women, have fat all over their bodies, are fat with stupidity, are slow of reflexes and wit! he is quick witted, and, lightning fast with his reflexes! he is a genius, and, needs to be called as such, as is clint eastwood, paul newman, tom hanks, and, all the other shining men and women who act their hearts out for us here in America! hats off!! to this fine human being. i wish he were my friend! i wish i knew robert redford. i really do. he, and all the other geniuses in Hollywood, have made my life more deep, more complete, more rounded, more profound. i don't want to know what i would be like without robert redford, barbra sttreisand, clint eastwood, et al , in my life! give this man 5 Oscars!
The Apostle (1997)
hats off to a genius!!
i waited to see this movie. i guess i was afraid. i watched "the apostle" tonight! it gripped me from the first turn of the reels. i have always adored robert duvall! "convicts" is also one of his best roles! and, let us not forget "lonesome dove"! i could not believe the fact that he also directed this movie, as well. i know it was made back in 1997, but, i just saw it tonight. robert duvall-you are one of the finest actors to ever come out of the back woods of this great country of ours! the tragedy is you did not make more movies in which you were also given the chance to direct! i take my hat off to you, fine sir! hats off, gentlemen, to a genius!!
The Merchant of Venice (2004)
al pacino is shylock!
i fell in love with this play as a boy! it amazed my father. he could not understand my fascination with it. i have always loved it. it shows the rampant hatred world-wide against the jews. this hatred was unfounded. i waited in 2003 3 months to see this movie! i stood at the door of the theater waiting to see it. to my horror, it opened in only one theater. i was one of 3 or 4 people waiting to see it! what has happened to mankind? have their brains dried up? the history, the costumes, the music, the words, were perfect. al pacino is shylock. lynn collins is wonderful, as well. all of the parts were played with passion similar to the old vic theater! bravo for having the courage and integrity to make this movie!
Mai wei (2011)
"my way" is a masterpiece!
i was at red box last Saturday. i am a 66 yr. old white male brought up dirt poor in the south. all my family is military. all of us. i saw the picture of 2 soldiers walking the other way. i saw the title "my way". i clicked "review". i had to see this movie! i was very sick later that day. i put this movie in the DVD player. it hit me! the south Korean and the Japanese runners! the mud. the language! the realism. this is one of the finest films ever made! the story is true. the characters put Hollywood to shame! the battle scenes. the casting, the cinematography, are out of this world! this is the finest war movie ever made! hands down! if this movie does not take all of the Oscars, send the Oscar committee to north Korea! and leave them!
