Prometheus (2012)
Just Ignore the Bro
I love this movie. It is packed with great actors and is ultimately a breath of fresh air compared to most contemporary sci-fi pics. Prometheus manages to meld the humanistic with the alien and creepy in a nice way. I felt the HR Giger vibe very much. Also, the casual manner of the scientists and other professionals was believable considering the society of the future in this context; seeing the flip-flop types was believable. I did not care for the character of Dr.Holloway; a self serving, obnoxious alpha male character. Also, the whole "old man makeup" is never a good look. I have no idea why they just didn't use a real "old man" in place of the one they used... weird!
The Possession of David O'Reilly (2010)
Not Fun
I have seen this movie twice now just to make sure I had a decent understanding of it. It starts out interesting but very soon takes a weird and dark turn. This movie kind of reminds me of certain Spanish movies where the outcome is just all kinds of bad. Lots of anxiety, creepy lighting, and sadness, and no glimpse of hope. Depression and a quite precarious sense of being accompanies this film, and the lighting and setting doesn't help. Creepy glass and dim lamps pair with the sad and oppressive theme. To its credit, certain scenes are for sure creepy and "jumpy" like the ones with the "demons" appearing outside, but for me anyway, the jumpiness of the lead character and his manic crap made me nervous and just took away the fun of an otherwise good horror flick.
Chernobyl Diaries (2012)
A Hugely Missed Opportunity
From the beginning Chernobyl Diaries blatantly projects a stereotype of the stupid, inconsiderate, privileged American. The treasure of viewing sites of Pripyat are continuously marred by the vapid and weak cast. The foreign couple (Australian?) and the tour guide were the only characters that added any kind of sympathy or realness to the movie. Otherwise, I could not wait for the other useless shits to be killed by whatever or whoever was out there. There were more than a few moments when the characters could have been smart and gotten out of the situation, but they instead writhe in panic and end up in a worse situation. Also, the ending bites a big ding-dong. I give it 2 stars only because one can view some unique areas of Pripyat, etc.
Bunnyman (2011)
Pathetic and hard to watch... but I did watch it.
So you're watching a guy in a rabbit suit surrounded by dead bodies and you watch curiously without any hint of alarm? So you are caught by the guy in the rabbit suit and proceed to be mauled by his chainsaw but the look on your face seems to imply nothing particularly wrong is happening? So you wrangle the chainsaw from the guy in the bunny suit and have ample time to take him out but instead hover around the doorway and let him walk away? So you then leave the chainsaw on the floor and run into what is apparently the killing room, then leave your friend there because that gimp in the Burning Man goggles is pretty freaky, right? So you're in a tree being sawed down by that guy in a bunny suit, surely facing a slow and painful death if caught, and you scream "take off your mask!"? So are we supposed to think the guy in the bunny suit is some kind of Josef Mengele protégé with his love for classical music and medical experiments or is that element just supposed to be ironic and "scary"? They should have just used Wagner and gotten it over with.
It takes a lot for me to give a movie one star. I'd even give Troll 2 a few more stars because at least the sheer badness of it is entertaining. The acting and casting in Bunnyman is just as bad but not as laughable (cue depraved redneck hillbilly guy in plaid with shotgun and chaw in his cheek and "pre-med student" in daisy dukes). It looks like they trolled the local community college drama department to find their actors not to mention the crew. Just read other reviews to find out how abysmal the special effects are. I could do better just having watched a few seasons of Face Off. And can we talk about the convenient similarities the dinner table scene has to both TCM and House of 1000 Corpses? Notice some of the same audio effects as well. So original, guys!
The one star is for the creepy female antagonist who reminded me of a less funny soccer mom version of Sleepaway Camp's Angela Baker.
The Devil's Mercy (2008)
Subtle yet effective horror film that doesn't rely on special effects or cheap clichés.
To start, can we agree that the three user reviewers that gave this film one star must have written by the same person? I think I am a pretty discerning horror fan and know this is far from a one star film. Devil's Mercy is surely not that bad.
While not some brilliant masterpiece of horror, it is still really effective and a fun watch. Stephen Rea shines in his role as the sinister landlord who is not all that he seems, and the dynamic he shares with his young partner is well done and adds an interetsing twist. There are notes of Rosemary's Baby and other films where the creepiest moments do not rely on cheap special effects, dark lighting or shaky camera shots. In fact, it's that sense of things feeling normal and safe which lends to a nice increase in suspense when we realize things are hardly what they seem on the outside.
If you like movies with themes of dark witchcraft, sinister intentions, spooky old houses, and possession than you might find this worth the watch.
