Creatures from the Pink Lagoon (2006)
Campy homage to directors and playwrights
In the beginning, a giant mosquito attacks a guy. One can see the wires attached to the insect. With this cheesiness the tone is set: 'Pink Lagoon' is written and directed with all the panache of an Ed Wood movie...music included. Additionally, one can see the Romero low budget black and white style including the black male lead. Lines and scenes are shamelessly stolen from Mart Crowleys "Boys in the Band." And despite all this, I enjoyed the wit and the wonder of what can be done with gay zombies. I was not disappointed and hope for a sequel. Perhaps there could be gay zombie dating. Or perhaps there could be a great dance sequence where all zombies wear a top hat and become Rockets while Judy Garland sings. Zing goes the strings in my heart!
The 24th Day (2004)
Two man show with twists and turns
The last time I saw a two-man play making the transition to film was SLEUTH. And if you're familiar with the class difference of the two characters, the twists and turns, the themes, you'll find a similar structure in 24th Day.
On the plus side, I really enjoyed the script (with only one exception), the direction, and the performances. I was floored with James Marsden's performance!
The story is thematically fascinating. We don't need to identify with the characters but rather empathize with the posed moral questions...were forced to do introspection through the themes. Hero and villain are constantly changing lanes...this is a mark of good writing.
The only thing I did not like was the annoying cuts to flashbacks which do not move the story forward, ruin the suspense, and suffocate the great pacing. I realize that the natural instinct from stage to screen is to make the story move...but it just interrupts the flow.
All and all this was a really fine job.
