Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll (1991)
Funny, Honest, Sad...Kryptonite for stupid people & gold for the rest of us!
I have to admit that I've seen Bogosian in the theater a few times. The endearing thing about him is that the audience, by design, is never in step with him and is sometimes even the punchline. He mixes social commentary with straight comedy so well, that sometimes we viewers find ourselves laughing (or cursing) at his fairly accurate portrayal of ourselves or someone we know. That's his stick.
I read this book "Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll" back when it was published in 1992, and caught his show that same year. It's not for everyone, but if you like one-man shows that have something relevant to say about nearly everyone living in America, then this is a rewarding film. I've searched in vain, so trust me when I say you won't find anything like this in contemporary performances...not mainstream anyway. Give this one a watch. It stays with you.
Man of Steel (2013)
Half baked story employing a famous brand...
This movie didn't bother to provide a reason for the non-comic book crowd to care about the characters. If you subtract or otherwise disregard the previous superman movies, then all you're left with is some weird tale about a willfully reclusive guy who's chosen to save the world and has a devotion to a woman (Lois) whom he only shares screen time with for a few minutes.
There's no character development in this film. There's very little humanity in it. It gives you few reasons to keep watching, but if you have nothing better to do, it's not a complete waste of time. It's on par with the countless other half-baked movies that possessed a fraction of this movie's budget.
A History of Violence (2005)
Totally disjointed & pointless
This movie follows a disturbing trend in Hollywood these days...it mistakes obliqueness with profundity. Nothing about this movie fit -- the plot was non existent & the characters were flimsy (with the exception of Mortensen's). William Hurt is embarrassingly bad here. There's really nothing nice to say about this movie. The most insulting part was what the director tried to do (without spoiling) I'll just say he took a fractured series of events, some under-developed characters, and tried to impose some profound statement on the viewer, again mistaking obliqueness with profundity. People who rate this movie high are overlooking the fact that the characters in this film & their actions are not only unrealistic, but don't even follow their own rationales.
The sex & violence didn't bother me. This movie was awful for other reasons. Mortensen was good, though.
Last Days (2005)
so much ado about what?
I appreciate Van Sant's work. People say what they want, but this movie is honest and doesn't betray Cobain's legacy, either. That said, it's far from perfect. In fact, I'm not sure what he was aiming for, but it does seem like there's a little more Van Sant in here than Cobain.
Nirvana fans who take offense to this movie have a legitimate beef -- it's a fictional work, sure, but it does use the likeness of a respected artist and portray him as a mumbling, introverted crackpot -- for some this is stretching the story beyond any verifiable truth.
I'm a Nirvana fan. The movie didn't offend me. Didn't do too much else, either. 5/10 is a fair rating for this oddball piece of fiction.
Along Came Polly (2004)
Harmless and funny
I heard this movie was a hard sell, which is probably why I ended up enjoying it so thoroughly. The movie is far from perfect the talented cast is somewhat misdirected - but it's their talent, along with the hilarious circumstances that unfold throughout the film's neat 90 min running time, which keeps the film moving and the laughter rolling. Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston strike a nice contrast as the fated couple united by a hysterical comedy of errors. Philip Seymour Hoffman is wonderful as Stiller's pitiful (and only) friend and confidant. And Alec Baldwin steals every scene in which he appears (would love to see him do more comedy).
I am not easily offended by bathroom humor quite the opposite, I think it's funny when pulled off right. Whenever I read viewers complaining about so-called 'gross-out humor' or "toilet bowl comedy", I am genuinely confused. When the hell did we get so uptight? Fart jokes and bedroom humor have comprised some of the funniest scenes ever filmed (Jeff Daniels in "Dumb & Dumber" or "Chris Tucker" in Friday, for example). I'd recommend this harmless and enjoyable movie to my mother (toilet humor, and all!).
