Family Switch (2023)
Not higher art, but wnjoyable
I read some of the reviews, and I am somewhat surprised by the harshness. I found the movie sweet and light and just enjoyable. Not every movie out there has to be cinematic art. Sometimes what you need on a rainy weekend afternoon is to curl up in front of the tv to enjoy something lighthearted and wholesome. Yes, the switcheroo bit has been done sooo many times, but hey, so have many superhero movies and I don't see anyone complaining (seriously, how many Spider-Man movies do we need?). No, it was not a particularly clever plot, but I fully enjoyed watching the actors chemistry, and dare I say, found myself laughing out loud in some spots.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023)
Surprisingly touching
I must admit that the queen is not one of my favorite characters in the Bridgerton world, so I wasn't enthusiastic about watching this particular story arch, but I am glad I did, as it provided much needed backstory for the series. In the original series, they always hinted at the fact that the queen was an unconventional one, and that she broke some barriers, and in this mini-season, we get to see the queen's origin story, and how the king (whom we barely see in the main series) fits in the picture.
I wholeheartedly enjoyed seeing Violet and the way her character is gearing up to potentially have her own story. And Lady Danbury's storyline was pretty hard to watch if you consider all the implications of her basically being sold into marriage, but her defiance and resourcefulness makes her one formidable character.
But in the end, I would say that the whole story was worth watching just so you can watch the last 3 minutes of the last episode. Those last 3 minutes sum up and explain (with remarkably little dialogue) why the queen was always somewhat obsessive about an heir. To her, making sure that George's line of succession endured was the pinnacle of her love for her husband, because that way, he would continue to live in their grandchildren.
