Resident Evil (2022)
Stupefyingly bad acting. Terrible writing. Awful everything. And not Resident Evil
Every character is despicable. No one and nothing to root for, or even not want to see them suffer the terrible end they deserve. And that's just the plot.
As for the rest of it, the acting is annoyingly bad, not even in a it's-so-bad-that-we-can-laugh-at-it way. Direction, editing, lighting, music, everything is the lowest of low budget.
The angsty teen drama is basically glued on, and makes the supposed protagonists all the more obnoxious.
Do yourself a favor and watch anything else. You will have an excellent chance of spending your time better than watching this slop.
The Wanting Mare (2020)
Somewhat nice to look at, but dull and pointless
It is pretentious and technically inept. A bad movie. No point in sight. No character development. No acting to speak of. Looks like a camera test, as as another reviewer put it.
BigBug (2022)
Not for everyone, not for me.
First of all, it is really too long for what it contains. It could be a lot tighter and probably more impactful as a 75-90 minute movie. Anyway
Secondly, it is heavy-handed with the inside French culture jokes, it really doesn't maintain its comedic impact nearly as well beyond that
Third, it has a mean quirk through its quirkiness, something really unsettling. Not necessarily a bad thing in itself, but it made for a tiring viewing experience for me at least
I thought I would really like this one, but it didn't work at all for me. I can see why others rate it much higher, though.
Ad Astra (2019)
Gorgeous visuals. Best enjoyed with the sound off
The movie is very beautiful to look at. Very. This is Hoyte van Hoytema's work after all. But I found the very nonsensical plot, the drip-torture pace of the plot and the bland dialogue to all be detrimental to the enjoyment of the visuals. So I watched it again with the sound off and it was a much better experience. Oh and the science is almost comically inaccurate, if you really care about that; I personally didn't really mind.
Settlers (2021)
Nihilism, yeah yeah, but hey, it's on Mars, sort of
This movie does not bother with the only thing it has all this time to do: examine its characters. No for the "arthouse" defenders, it doesn't deliver that way either.
Everyone behaves as they would at a bleak homestead in the 1800s American Southwest, or maybe the Australian Outback. And nothing matters. But they're on Mars, see...
No point, no beginning, no ending, no story, no Mars and no characters.
Another Life (2019)
Awful characters, silly plot line, utterly disappointing, unwatchable
All the top-ranked reviews are right, this is cringey and awful in every respect. Not one likeable character on Earth or in space. And everyone in this little world is an utter moron. How this got approved for production is beyond me. Netflix must be getting desperate to be scraping to bottom of the barrel like this
